Was it a Team Deathmatch room? Team rooms can take a while to start depending on the time of day. Deathmatch is the more popular one. Probably because in that mode, you don't have to worry about a inexperienced player making your team lose. Although the other pro players can kill them and get a last second 100 points and make YOU lose in second place.

I did switch to deathmatch for 10min, but then switched back to team thinking that was the more popular one. I haven't been on in 6 months or so.
