The new developer is still unknown.

Gee I wonder who the new development team could be?

Roll Eyes

Anyone care to guess?

Also can anyone tell me why I'm so happy right now?

No,  I have no idea.  In my opinion you shouldn't be happy.

Lucid Games never had the makings of a Varsity Athlete.

If I hear Jaffe gets involved in the reboot I'll laugh in horror.

"Sony has decided to instead move the series revival to one of its first-party studios in Europe."

I'm not sure why I've logged into my account after such a long period of absence just to comment on this, but I suppose I've done more heinous things in my time.

Through my own personal Google-fu, I am given to understand that the new TM developers have the following games under their belt so far:
  • The Persistence - A passingly interesting but ultimately standard-looking sci-fi horror FPS game with an unfortunate lack of character and identity of its own.
  • Air Force Special Ops: Nightfall - A VR "game" that essentially just a tedious recruitment tool for the U.S. Air Force. Its gameplay reads like a Call of Duty reskin of Superman 64.
  • The Playroom - From what I can tell, a collection of fun but not very deep minigames involving a bunch of robots who look strangely similar to Eva from Wall-E. There's a VR version.
  • Run, Sackboy, Run - An iOS game where you run endlessly until you fail. Think of a much more elaborate version of that T-rex running game you can play when your internet isn't working and your browser pages aren't loading.
  • Horizon: Call of the Mountain (not released yet) - A VR game that looks to be more like an interactive movie with some gameplay elements than an actual game with complex mechanics, if the reveal trailer and the past track record of the developer is anything to go by.

...I am entirely unsure why this was the developer Sony chose to work on a game like Twisted Metal, but their catalogue doesn't fill me with a ton of hope that they'll handle the game properly. It'd be one thing if the devs had either a much broader series of releases under their belt (which would indicate enough general development experience to pull off doing something like this for the first time) or a back-catalogue of exclusively driving/racing titles of varying quality, but this is by all accounts a group with minimal experience and not much of a pedigree to speak of. Nothing they've done thus far suggests that this is their forte, or that there's even that much imagination or creative brilliance in the things they do. Sure, all of their games are technically proficient; the graphics are very shiny, there are no framerate issues, and each one contains minimal bugs and coding errors that I can see. But they also possess rather simple mechanics— which don't always work, if the Air Force game is anything to go by— and they are entirely unremarkable from an artistic standpoint. Call me pessimistic, but I feel like that's the exact opposite of what we need for a new TM game.

Mind you, if they drop the ball with this reboot the way ESP fumbled the last one, that might spell the end for this entire franchise. Sony's faith in TM has clearly not been high over the course of the last decade, so if this reboot doesn't pan out, they might decide to just vault the entire IP.

...

On the other hand, if this TM reboot turns out to be smash hit, then it'll accomplish the unexpected trifecta of successfully reviving a long-dead franchise, helping Sony combat their shortage of new exclusives that people actually care about, and solidifying Firesprite as a contender in the triple-A development market. So I'll reserve most of my judgment until we have some actual gameplay footage for the thing, since the reward is about as high as the risk.

Without the original team this will likely just be another ordinary video game that will be overlooked and forgotten within a couple of months after release.

Let's be fair. The game wouldn't be much better with the original team.

The last Twisted Metal game was by all accounts a failure and had far too many intrinsic issues to be salvageable in the long run despite its potential. The stories (what few existed, anyway) were derided for how excessively unlikable everyone was, and the campaign mode itself was riddled with issues and inconsistencies. The multiplayer was broken and never got fixed, the vehicles were horribly imbalanced, and a handful of the weapons were upsettingly easy to abuse. The overall consensus is that people just did not care for what was done with the game, and it wasn't because the audience wasn't there. It was because the game itself was mediocre and undercooked after three years of development.

Moreover, Jaffe being at the helm of any modern title right now is a guaranteed disaster.

I don't know where you get your information. I was here when it all went down. TMX died because network connectivity issues plagued the game for the firs 6 months of its release.

Thumpy is right, we need the original team, because developers don't understand TM at a fundamental gameplay level. We don't need Jaffe, he was the ideas guy, but the team behind the mechanics/physics are the only developers who have a grasp on what they're doing. Anything else and you're gonna end up with "another ordinary video game that will be overlooked and forgotten within a couple of months after release."

The best chance they have at making a successful game is working with the TM pro players at this point.

I was here when it all went down too. I was on this website and in other forums where I saw the game being talked about. I saw what people were saying about the game when it came out, and multiple people at the time (and especially afterwards) said the exact things I outlined. This forum was focused on the connectivity issues and game imbalances, but other forums mentioned how hard all of the characters were to like, and a lot of people here and elsewhere lamented the "characters can drive any vehicle" decision and the lack of full stories. Reviewers slammed the single player mode as a whole pretty hard.

There was never a single, unifying complaint that stood above all others. There were multiple complaints that added up to a very large number of people disliking the game for different reasons. I might be embellishing, since over a decade has passed and I don't exactly have the comments of the time saved for reference. But that's what I remember.

Several months ago I saw one of David Jaffe's videos.
He explained how other people who were connected to the people they worked for (Sony) were interfering with the project.
Its like being hired to cook for someone and the customer's reletives are in the kitchen interfering with the chef's work and that's why we got a racing minigame in TMX.

David was involved in so many successful games, so much so that our expectations of him were high and he was bashed too much for that.

However we did provide him with alot of useful
info that would have cost Sony alot of money to obtain, and I sensed that it was not appreciated enough.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to remember a certain someone from 'The TMX Team' actually blaming us for some of the failures in the game and THAT WAS LAME!

Overall I do appreciate everything they have done over the years and hope they make a memorable game in the future.

Even though a memorable game has not been made in 22 years.
