Twisted Engine (Fan-made game engine based on TM2)
04/06/21 at 22:24:06

Intro:

Hey guys!

So, I scoured the internet for a really good fan-made Twisted Metal game, but surprisingly you'd be hard-pressed to find any good results. There really aren't any Twisted Metal 2 recreations, which simply stuns me. If you look at other franchises like Sonic, Mario, and Pokemon, etc.-- there's TONS of fan-made games and engines to explore.

So... I decided to try and be the first guy to make a Twisted Metal 2 engine. Behold-- Twisted Engine!

Video:

Additional Notes:

This is SUPER early in development still, but the video should give you a good idea for what I'm going for-- a faithful recreation of Twisted Metal 2 that runs at a glorious 60 FPS/1080p/4K resolution. I plan to make the HUD match TM2, and add 2 more cars and 2 more levels. There is already AI code in there from another game I made a while back, but I have it disabled for now.

If you're curious, I'm using Game Maker Studio 2.3 to make this engine. Snidr is who wrote the system that powers the 3D graphics and 3D collisions, but I am doing the physics, the menu system and asset conversions myself. The models and textures here were actually converted directly from the PC port of Twisted Metal 2.

I plan on adding a lot more things like weapon pickups, different handling for each car, the ability to add your own cars and levels, and a local multiplayer mode (I don't know how to do online multiplayer in GMS unfortunately... Sad )

Anyway, hope you guys like it, and feel free to give me suggestions for improvements! Cheesy

Really cool man. Really cool. I'll be watching this. Who are the extra drivers your putting in? I'd love to see yellowjacket, darkside, crimson fury and of course darktooth. Good luck with this project i look forward to seeing your progress.

Thanks dude! I'll definitely put more cars in. I can definitely do Yellow Jacket and Crimson Fury, that would be interesting for sure!

I will also finish up Mr. Grimm and Sweet tooth. Got wall collisions working pretty good last night, as well as a new HUD based on the Twisted Metal 2 design. Smiley

How long have you been working on this project, and do you have a approximate time when your wanting to be done? Does the AI actively hunt other cars? My main complain about the original  is AI  having infinite energy/specials. Curious to know about your AI.

Thanks again!

Actually yes-- the AI does in fact battle with itself, but when doing so it doesn't cause any damage to AI cars (the Player would need to destroy the cars in this case, though I forget if the original games work that way or not. I can change it accordingly).

The AI (still disabled for now) is actually my own code from another game I was working on. For now, the AI does have infinite ammo and energy, but I can change that or make an option for it in this engine.

Basically I've been working on this for about a week, so not very long at all. I decided to build this engine off of another game I was working on, since it already had a lot of the mechanics I needed for a Twisted Metal engine. I'm planning on doing at least 2 more levels and finishing Sweet Tooth and Mr. Grimm for now. I'll probably also add in Yellow Jacket and Crimson Fury, since they aren't terribly difficult models to work with. For now I'm gonna play it out by ear and see how many people are interested. If people like it and want to see more, then I'll go crazy with it and do the more in-depth stuff (e.g. interactive/destructible level designs, adding your own cars and levels, and maybe even a level editor utility). That's where I am in my thought process right now. Since it's just a game engine for the Twisted Metal community and not a full game per say, it's not really going to have a "final release" of sorts.

Well you seem pretty well versed and know what your doing. I would love a level editor, and ability to add cars, and just general options for game or AI. There are alot of people who lurk on this site so I'm not sure if you'll get people to log in, but people will definitely love what you do regardless. Cheers man. Oh I gotta ask is it possible on your end to have playable dark tooth with the animated head? That's what everyone has been after since the game has been released.

Most certainly, yes. Grin
I'm definitely thinking about that and working it out in my head. That's basically how I do these projects, lol xD

This is awesome. Looks nice and smooth too. Less clunky for TM2 that's for sure. I had a remake planned awhile back, myself, but then TM2D started and it took all my time up. This is super cool though, hope to see more progress. God knows TM2 needs a remake. Love the game but man i wish it had some bug fixes and better control.

Thanks! :3

I'm gonna do my best to make the gameplay buttery smooth. Wall collisions are semi-working but I want to get them less glitchy than they are.

In the meantime, I actually went and made a logo for the engine yesterday during work XD Here it is:

Pretty interesting project, but I have one question. Why does it say select a ship?

Thanks! Smiley

LOL! XDD That's a leftover from the game I'm building Twisted Engine off of. It was a spoof of the Atari Jaguar game Cybermorph, called "Technamorph", and it basically was a game where you fly around in a hovercraft and destroy all the other hovercrafts. I figured I could re-use a lot of the logic, since Twisted Metal has the same premise, and all the 3D stuff and AI were already in place for me to work with.

Big update!

This week I've managed to get in contact with none other than Mel McMurrin! He showed interest in participating as the voice of Calypso for a bonus cutscene in this project!

So behold-- an early version of a brand new Calypso clip, made especially for Twisted Engine, with Mel McMurrin reprising his role!

The project itself is going slowly but surely. Physics are a bitch to nail down though, lmao. I'm not the best at geometry and stuff, so I'm just feeling my way through it as I go.
