What if TMA made a Twisted Metal game...
03/03/20 at 12:23:24

I was just pondering: What would a Twisted Metal made by TMA members be like? What if enough TMA members came together and agreed on the direction that a fan made TM game should take? What would it be? Another TM2 style game (the TM3 we never really got), another TMB style game or something completely different? Perhaps we'd want to see Harbor City completed and do it ourselves...?

Of course this would be a 100% passion project. Perhaps through something like GoFundMe we could raise enough cash to better help with the project and pull talent from other areas outside of TMA to assist. Anything to make it a reality (no matter how long it takes, because quality matters more than a rushed project). What would or should the game be like?

Me personally, I think Harbor City would be great to finish since there is a lot of available info already to get the ball rolling...

As has already been pointed out many times, the problem is the fan base is totally split on what it would look like. You have:

1. Hard core single player nuts who want that to be the emphasis and break new ground.

2. Multiplayer nuts like myself who want deep combat and feel that was left out of the last two major releases (TMHO and TM:PS3).

3. Black universe nuts. These people can fall in any of the above categories but want a dark and freaky game.

4. TM2 universe nuts. Again, they can fall in any of the first two categories but they want it to feel like the tone of TM2.

Trying to make all of these groups happy would require a very skilled group of people.

Yeah, this is all true. That is pretty much the TM fan base in a nutshell excluding the minority groups that want a TMX sequel, those who want a game developed by one of Sony's in house developers (like how tm3/4 were made), or those who will settle with some sort of Remaster collection or Remake of the past games.

But then there's what the media wants. At times some website will opine on Twisted Metal and act like an expert on how to save the series.
Recent example from PS Universe's website; https://www.psu.com/news/ten-playstation-franchises-we-would-love-to-see-revived...
Which says;
"All right, whoever has the rights to Twisted Metal: listen up. This one is for free: stop trying to reinvent Twisted Metal as a AAA $60 prestige title. In the modern gaming environment, the square peg that is Twisted Metal just doesn’t fit into that top-shelf round hole.
Twisted Metal is dirty, gritty and kind of disturbing. It is therefore a perfect fit for the free-to-play market."

I completely disagree with this.
And it's also the logic Jaffe/Bartlet studios originally had with DRAWN TO DEATH before that was changed from free-to-play to a 20 dollar title that did not sell well.
The idea that Twisted Metal free-to-play will just steal away players from Overwatch, etc. is a bit too hopeful and unrealistic, and all the fans that wanted a new TM game to have depth with its story would just dismiss the title completely.

& It's not like there aren't vehicular action games in the free-to-play market already, and those titles are forgettable. Sure, the brand "Twisted Metal" may get a F2P title some attention, but not that much. TM has a cult following, but there hasn't been a game since 2012 so its also a shrinking cult following.

And I was very proud to pay full price for Twisted Metal: Black on the day it was released in 2001. And if Playstation 5 had an AAA full priced Twisted Metal game that took full advantage of PS5's technology I would gladly buy it too.

My advice to whoever takes on the next TM project is simple

GO ALL IN OR FUCK OFF

I’d like to see an evolution on the gameplay. An open world battleground based on smaller fractal maps inspired by the core original games. A balanced roster is key. And yes, I think a battle royale would be very popular and well received in the car combat genre. Think of the Drop Zone level and tell me that wouldn’t be fun to play over a much larger open world map. I think they could also try to implement on-foot gameplay, but again balancing would be key. Twisted Metal should ideally play like a fighting game on wheels, so having on-foot portions of gameplay would need to play out like a risk/reward mechanic. Storywise I would suggest scrapping everything and using what works. It’s too late to salvage what has already been done and we’re the last people that care. Individual endings, however, are a must. I think a three part structure similar to Black but with a motion comic book style is a fair compromise for all.

I seriously think Sony were complete morons for not realizing the potential of a battle royal TM. That's practically what the original game was supposed to be.

At the same time though, how much longer is that going to be a thing?  Now I can't help but wonder if they missed the boat.

In my opinion, the only way to make TM viable again is to do a nice solid release - AS A FIRST GEN RELEASE (so that it sells over the life cycle of the Playstation).

Unless Sony has a TM ready to go within the next 12 months I kind of think they missed the boat again.

I believe battle royale is still very viable and it’s a much different take on the genre. I think, of course, if they were to do that it shouldn’t be the core of the game, but definitely a significant part of multiplayer. I think for the main game they should focus on level design and balancing above all. Twisted Metal 2012 had really large expansive battlegrounds but they were too wide. Some of the best gameplay in Twisted comes from close quarters combat. They really should just go back and see why the original designs worked and try to ape that for a next generation console. In some ways they need to keep it simple but in other ways like online they need to reinvent the wheel to keep an active community. Having new vehicles drop throughout the game’s life cycle similar to Smash Bros: Ultimate would help a ton as well.

A crossover game with Warhawk, TM universe, Critical Depth, and Outwars. It would have air, vehicle, water, and ground combat. Maybe throw in some Jet Moto and Rogue Trip characters as well.

I had thought of that too, an ultimate Singletrac-Incognito Universe MMO game, even though it is an unrealistic idea. Although I would also add the monsters from War of the Monsters, the Downhill Domination racers, and throw in the Calling All Cars! criminals as pedestrians too.

Ha, yeah, don’t forget “Ice Age Arctic Blast!” Or “Looney Tunes Dash!”

Actually, those are some pretty high profile licenses..now I’m wondering how ESP managed to fuck that up..

Looney Tunes & Ice Age were made in partnership with Zynga games. Of the ESP involved mobile games I'd only count Cars Vs. Bosses, but that game isn't even available anymore. Mobile games kind of suck in general too. And I said I wanted a Singletrac-Incognito universe game. Fuck the EatSleepPlay era.

Also, the last SingleTrac game developed on PS1 was an Animorphs game, based off the Animorphs series, and it was unsuccessful, so sometimes a good developer can't make much of an existing property. Just look how long it took for a good Batman game to be made (first game was 1989, but first great game was 2009 - so 20 years). With original works developers have more freedom to be creative as opposed to licensed properties.

And the Singletrac title I actually forgot was Streak Hoverboard Racing. Shame on me, I forgot about that mediocre racer that was meant to fill the Jet Moto void, hehe.

Ehh, a lot of people consider the first Batman game a classic. I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about, but go on..
