Is it possible to reverse engineer TM2PC?
08/03/19 at 04:42:43

Recently someone reverse engineered Diablo on PC. Here’s a video showing how it was done:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5tADL_fmsHQ

My question is do you think it’s possible TM2 could be reversed engineered using a similar method? I’m not sure there is a .sym file in the index, but maybe there is something else we could work off of in these files. I can’t code but I would be more than willing to create a GoFundMe or something so we can collectively as a community pay someone who does know how to code to accomplish this. At the very least it would be nice to have the game available on Windows 10 so all the amazing mods people have been making can actually be played by casual fans, possibly reigniting enthusiasm for the franchise. We are the Twisted Metal Alliance, but that name hasn’t meant anything since 2001 and with the 25th anniversary coming up: “What better place than here? What better time than now?”

Park it on the sidelines. Motaro is doing enough when it comes to TM 2 and theres no reason to try and reverse engineer the whole damn game.

The game is broken. Very few people are going to download a virtual machine just to play a game from the mid ‘90s. If we want to see a true remaster that doesn’t suck we might just have to do it ourselves.

Logical point would to put in a suggestion with someone who does this for a living...like GOG or night drive studios.

GOG has a system in place, a game gets enough  support they will work on it a prosue the rights needed.

Saying your going to set up a GoFundMe, when you are doing none of the work isnt going to help you get support either.

I knew that would create an issue with someone as soon as I posted it. I’m not saying I’m going to do that, it’s a suggestion that perhaps if we find someone willing to do it we could crowdfund the work involved. I would be looking to profit zero from this. Currently I’m personally spending hours, days trying to reskin the entire roster. That alone has taken me a shit ton of man hours to get right due to how poorly the files line-up with the mesh. I am, however, doing this as a labor of love, someone who’s not a fan presumably would not be so devoted.

I’m just getting familiar now with GOG so maybe that can be another option if we can stir up enough support. There are definitely others out there interested in modding this game that are not actively posting here. I see threads pop up on Reddit from time to time asking for a remaster and there is at least one person I’ve seen on YouTube who has modded the PS1 version.

Don’t get me wrong, Marltoro is doing wonders with his programs, but we can’t rely on one person to handle all the work, especially if this is not exactly his expertise. I’ve long dreamed of an expanded Twisted Metal game, one we can actually improve upon and balance. The fact that Twisted 2 is still regarded as the best in the series tells me if there is going to be a revival then you shouldn’t fix what isn’t broken. Unfortunately, like I said before, this game is very broken for like 99% of the gaming public.

It's broken for people who don't take time to fix it, or understand what it takes to run an old pc game on a newer system.

I'd drop that down to 75%.

And more like 85% of the population doesn't even know/care about twisted metal.

Since you already made your opinion known and you aren’t going to add anything else to this topic, can you take your negative non-contributing defeatist attitude somewhere else please? Seriously, are you just posting in these threads so you can see your name lined up in a row?

No, I was just expecting you to debate your point, not give up and go off topic.

This is about crowdfunding a reverse engineering of TM2 not me.

Is it possible?

Of course it is.

Am I the one to do it?

Ha ha ha WTF . . . not hardly.

Maybe someday someone will pull it off. I'm not sure what the point would be though. Reverse engineering it isn't going to improve the game. You'd just know how it was built . . .

Where does that leave you?  I guess if you want to make new levels but people are doing that anyway, right?

I disagree. The game isn't broken. It plays perfectly fine on a Windows 7 64bit Ultimate OS (which is the most 'hi-tech, modern' W7 you can get) with some tweaks. One of the more common issues with the PC version of TM2 is that the intros and ending cinematics run with Indeo, a very old and archaic system of Codecs that has long-since been discontinued. Most people aren't going to be bothered with searching for a fix, but a quick Google search as well as some personal research on what the problem is can help you.

https://www.moviecodec.com/download-codec-packs/indeo-codecs-legacy-package-31/

Then, you can always adjust and limits the FPS with some registry magic, same with the game's resolution. Sure, it won't work AS originally intended, but it WORKS. You don't need a virtual machine either, there are some ways to get the Online working on W7 too.

I tried unsuccessfully to run it on Windows 7 years ago, but that’s my point, Windows 7 is not what I believe most people are running their PCs on.

Average consumer of computer products often go years without updating OS's and often go a few versions before updating to a new OS/PC.

I wouldn't be suprised if theres quite a bit of 7s out there. I still run a 7 and a 10. Screw that 8 bull. Only thing that would make my life complete would be to have a rig with XP and 98 installed on it, but I digress.

The point is the group that keeps up with every OS release and hardware updates is the minority. So there is probably a lot more 7 systems out there than you think.

I do run Windows 7 myself. I think Windows 8 is crap, and Windows 10 is just not for me. I don't like it. Then again, some people are not really tech-savvy, and running some of these old/retro games on newer machines can be a bit of a hassle.
