Twisted Metal 2 gripes

I'm having a lot less fun with TM2 realizing how unbalanced the cars are. Ramming is ridiculous in this game especially hitting people from the side. Twister and Grasshopper are basically useless. All the cars die to fast as well and there aren't enough pickups on maps. If you play a challenge mode and finish the round the pickups don't respawn either. The A.I. Cheat with spamming specials and infinite energy attacks. Lastly homing missiles do more damage than fire missiles that is just ridiculous. I think this game would be so much better if all the issues above were addressed as well as fixing hammerheads special against mr. slamm.

When did you first play TM2? Is this a first run, or have you loved it for years?

I completely agree that there are issues with it that I think in a modern game or a "remaster" we would want to eliminate. However, generally most of us have a huge deference and respect for this game because without it it's highly unlikely ANY of the other TMs besides TM1 would exist. It IS the game that took car combat to the next level of depth.

With that said, I would fine tune the following:

1. More weapon pick ups - as you noticed, freezing and ramming is a HUGE focus of the game. More so than any other TM game (especially the PC version). Those of us (like myself) who prefer the weapons take center stage could certainly use more of those.

2. Fix damage amounts - yeah, it IS stupid that homing missiles do more damage than fire missiles.

3. Improve the AI - Yes, it's not necessarily the best, though there is still some uniqueness to them if you watch closely, In fact, as sad as it is, the AI for TM2 is arguably far better than the AI for TMSP3, released about a decade and a half later.

4. Fix car control (this isn't one you mentioned, but one I feel strongly about). It shouldn't feel like when you're behind the wheel of a sports car it controls worse than a real life dump truck. Unfortunately, that's often how the bouncy crazy feel of TM2 is. That is NOT to say that you can't learn to control them very well, but they naturally control a bit like jumping beans.

There's a lot of depth in there though that you just haven't discovered.  One of the best players of all time was amazing with the two cars you trashed (Twister and Grasshopper). They are high skill cars, but in the hands of a pro they are devastating.

TM2 is not my favorite (that's TMB) of the TMs, but it IS my second favorite, and it leads by a wide margin.

I loved it as a kid. Playing it now that I'm older is a slightly different story. My old problem is the cheating AI. I'd rather have a legit brutal enemy over a spammer you can learn.

I don't think the difficulty is that bad outside of AI spamming freezes at times which is totally cheating.

I don't mind the heavy damage ramming except certain vehicles have too much of a ramming advantage, particularly Axel and Minion. TM1 similarly had the problem where Darkside and Hammerhead had ramming advantages over the others. Hammerhead in TM2 was actually below average though, as HH had shit handling. What was the issue with Hammerhead and Mr. Slam that you speak of though? That Mr. Slam couldn't grab HH?

And I don't mind that vehicles die fairly quick. It is preferable to TM4's style where vehicle HP drains slower. That bothered me more because the matches would drag on too long, because the AI wouldn't hesitate grabbing a health after minutes of their health slowly chipping away, usually in a map that doesn't have enough weapon pickups. TM2 also didn't have enough weapon pickups in maps to justify decreasing the damage that weapons did.

About the cars Twister is not that bad, you can combo her special with mines, she's the fastest vehicle too although speed is not everybody's style. Twister just has shit armor, so her special can be risky to use, riskier than someone like Mr. Grimm. Grasshopper kind of sucks though, yeah, she was a step down from TM1's Pit Viper in stats. But TM2 by design was not trying to make a roster of equals, it was meant to have vehicles that suited different skill sets, and thus most players would be good with some cars and bad with others. Axel and Minion were the only vehicles that I could see anybody being able to be good with, and possibly Warthog, Thumper, and Spectre. But most of the vehicles were challenging, and some fans like a challenge.

I don't even think TM2 was even Singletrac's hardest game. They had tougher ones... Jet Moto 1 & 2 were brutal ...Critical Depth was pretty tough ...Incog's War of the Monsters is damn near impossible on the hardest difficulty

That I will agree with. I still think TM2 is pretty hard but after practicing it gets better. Jet Moto 2 and WotM still wrecks me. But i still find myself playing them.

I don't mind Minion having that ram advantage. He's a boss after all and was meant to be overpowered. I hate that he never got that ram power again after TM2. It's part of the reason why I like TM2 Minion the best.

I don't find the amount of weapon pickups to be a problem except in Moscow. If the generator gets destroyed you're gonna have a harder time finding weapons. (Usually Thumper will destroy it with his napalms) You can blowup the bridges to open up more weapons but I don't even recommend blowing them up because then you'll have less cover. The biggest issue with weapon pickups is the random respawn time for them not how many there are on the stage.

It's possible to beat the whole game with Twister and Grasshopper on hard without dying if you have the skill so they aren't really useless but can be hard to use for other people.

Being successful in TM2 requires knowing how all the enemy work, using your shield before fighting an enemy head on and learning how to dodge homing missiles. Pick up turbos in every stage (no turbos in New York) and raise it to 99 to be used in Holland because you're really gonna need it in that stage.

War of the Monsters has that TM3 and 4 AI where they go after the health but it's even worst in this game because the monsters have big health so taking on two monsters at once can be really rough. I do have no death videos of this game.

Just to clarify, my complaints of TM2 and not enough weapons stems from online multiplayer games. Not from a single player experience.

My only grips are:
-Enemies all attacks only you. Like for instance sweet tooth and spectre special will follow only you wich means if sweet launches 10 cones then all of them will follow you. Its pretty bad with Ricos which will follow you, even the ones you launch if it fails to hit an enemy.
-Infinite Ice for enemies, they should launch like 4 max instead of basically giving you a game over if Slam or Roadkill freezes you.
-Infinite specials like Twister. When you use her, if you use your special while running the enemies dont get caught in the tornado but when you face her she doesnt needs to be careful. Only needs to connect.
-Also they barely damage each other and if you are too far attacks dont deal damage even if they connect.

Other than that i love the game, to me the best gameplay.
