Twisted Metal 2 teaser in EGM Magazine 1996
11/21/18 at 23:40:55

I'm in the process of cleaning my parent's house out and I'm coming across so many things that I kept and forgot about. One of those things was a massive box filled with gaming magazines from the mid-90s. Lo and behold, I came across a teaser for the TM2 that I coveted at the time. I remember taking it to my grade seven classroom and reading it with a few friends psyched for its arrival. Good times. Good fucking times.

So, I thought I would share it as a PDF from my cloud. I would upload it straight to the site, but the file seems too big for the forum. The link is legit.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting how some of the driver names are different & how Mortimer is spelled Mortimor  Grin

Also funny is how Hammerhead got a 9 out of 10 in Maneuverability. If only...

I guess Sony's marketing department in the 90s sucked because they clearly couldn't get the right information out to journalists. Although, things could have changed before release, I'm going to assume it was human error because people are dumb. It would be an interesting question to have an answer to: was it misinformation or poor corroboration? Makes me wonder how many other articles from magazines had the wrong information.

I know most of the screenshots in the article, which were also used on the back of the TM2 jewel case, are "Photoshopped". I always laugh at the Mr. Grimm one where it's some fake ass, but cool-looking soul special attack.

Always thought that screenshot of Grimm was him freezing someone, didn't think of it as a weird visual of his special. Minion's tank is a black bone tank, hmm.

It looks like some of this data was from the time of the beta but I could be wrong. Roadkill's special is at 6 but look at Axel's special attack damage (9). Ridiculously strong as we would later find out via other means. Also, Needles smashing his own face with the hammer to look like his favorite clown is a concept I haven't heard of. Still doesn't explain the fire on his head.

aside from the unexplained head on fire, that does explain his appearance in his ending. I always wondered why it looked as if Needles Kane lost all his teeth in his ending, and looks as if he were beaten up... because he looks more menacing in his bio pic where he has all his teeth. Smashing his own face with a hammer would explain that, but I think the whole idea of that was too violent for a T-rated game so it was probably cut, which might even explain why Sweet Tooth was a hidden vehicle. I'd imagine the idea of ST breaking his teeth was Jaffe's, and then the idea evolved with Sweet Tooth's mask in TMB/TMX which feature some broken teeth (also symbolic of tooth problems that comes from eating too many sweets)

The Sweet Tooth hammer to face thing, whoa. That's an epic connection to find after all these years. I remember being confused about his ending too, but never gave it much thought. I figured it was damage from the tournament despite no one else looking beat up in their endings.

Grimm's "special" in the screenshot is hard to see because of the scan, but there are faces on each of the three ghostly soul-looking things.

The first screenshot of RK shooting Mr. Slam is bullshit too because of the camera positioning.

The one thing I thought was a cool design choice for the magazine was using bullet holes to block out ST and Minion's car and stats, but also the fact that they put another "article" behind it to make it look see-through.

This mag was the thing that kept us informed before the internet, this was the best mag at the time.

I had played TM1 and thought it was pretty good but I had no idea how much better TM2 was until my brother suggested to give it a try.

Turns out to be my fav game of all time and I've been hooked on video games for 39 years.
