On October 25th, 2018.. Online will be no more...

If you have been checking the store page like me, They updated the description with the following message.

Online features for Twisted Metal (PS3) will no longer be playable from October 25, 2018. Functionality will be affected in the following ways:

o You can play the campaign offline as well as local (couch) multiplayer in split screen mode.
o You will not be able to host or join an online game.

Which means, After that time period is over. The servers will be shut down, And no one will be able to play online anymore unless someone exploits a way to get it working through LAN servers. End of another era.. but hopefully SOMEONE figures out how to exploit it and to keep the servers up like TM Black

We'll see in a month from now.
Sometimes they post notices like that for games only for the server to still be online even after the expiration date (example - Arkham Origins Online).
But if it's true, then I'm not surprised. StarHawk's server went down recently, so I figured TM PS3 would be next.
The dozen or so players who still play TM on PS3 should make the most of what time is still left.
I do think it may still be possible to play TMX via LAN using XLink Kai though.

and thanks for the update, Jadupon.

Hey, No problemo.

Honestly, I was expecting this, since the servers never really worked properly if you  get what I mean.

Unfortunate to see it go like this though, Pretty unnoticed and unannounced just like that.

If anything,  Xlink could possibly be another solution to this, Which that is the only possibility

It's odd there is no news article about it anywhere, just the update on the PSN store https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP9000-NPUA80079_00-TWISTEDMETAL0100

But I did notice a news article about Drawn to Death, the game Jaffe made after working on TM PS3. That game's server is ending early next year. It's not even going to last a whole 2 years after its official release date. So given that game is going offline, it's all the more believable that TMX is on its last month.

Sony must be taking some cost cutting measures by cutting out servers to the least popular games. With drawn to death Im not suprised as the company that paid for the server no longer exist.

Was there ever a fix for Twisted Metal 2012 causing hard shutdowns on 60gb launch PS3's (red blinking light, 3 beeps, but NOT YLOD)?

I'd love to get some matches in before it's shut down, but my PS3 shuts down every time I try to join a room.

Such a damn shame, because gameplay wise this is the best in the series and I hate to see it go.

Everyone knows I was never a fan of this game and gave up on it long ago . . . BUT I'm very sad for all of those who loved it.  This is sad news indeed.

It's also sad news as it's the final nail in the coffin for official TM releases online.

At least you got a warning though.  TMBO was there one day, gone the next. We had no idea it was coming.

The Resident Evil Outbreak games have online capability, although not through Capcom.  Perhaps the same thing can happen for the TM games?

The reason those servers were able to be recreated was due to foresight by a player who knew the servers were going to be shut down. He did packet captures of almost every function on the live server, and then with another dev they were able to reverse engineer those packets piece by piece.

A big disadvantage facing PS3 games is that packets these days are encrypted and locked with a key. Back then in some PS2 era games, the encryption was either easy or in the case of Twisted Metal Black Online, non-existent. Also: I don't know if the PS3 can set a manual DNS to do a server redirect like the PS2 games can. That might be doable with a jailbroken console?

The only Ps3 server that has come back that I am aware of is Metal Gear Solid Online 2. And that is still an ongoing process and is far more complex than the Outbreak jobs or TMBO (not to say those weren't hard enough). And even then for MGO2, I think you need a Jailbroken CFW console or some other means that puts up a ton of barriers to players.

Not saying its not possible, but the stars have to be really aligned. Someone would have to capture packets first off, and then you'd need some serious development muscle behind it.

The Xlink Kai (LAN tunneling) option is the easiest route. Not that it is hassle free or foolproof either. It has its own barriers.

MGO2 you can play with a legitimate console, no need to jail break.

It also depends on if the server information is hard coded into the game. This happens sometimes and makes it impossible to resurrect said game.

Strangely the sever didn't go down  on the 25th. It's still up.

I'm not surprised Twisted Metal, Warhawk, and PS All Stars still have their servers online. Like with Arkham Origins Online sometimes those server closure announcements are kind of bullshit. I wouldn't be surprised if they last at least another year and randomly go offline one day without warning.

Even still, don't expect the communities to be super active from now on. The server closure announcements spiked activity in all those games in the short term but after awhile people will move on. It's not like some Farewell Tour that lasts years.

I can't connect to it. It lets me into a room for quick online play but no one every joins or is in a room then it boots me. Odd. I still would love to get in a few last rounds. TMX might not be perfect but I really enjoyed it back in the day and playing it one last time was a blast.

Quick play is not reliable. Never use it. I can go online just fine.

Make a new account and you'll be able to go to the online lobby.

I can't connect to TMX on my original account either because when the custom skins server was shut down years ago it effected many accounts and made it impossible to log in.
