PS1 Mini!
10/02/18 at 14:19:40

Yes, it's official!
https://blog.us.playstation.com/2018/09/18/introducing-playstation-classic-with-
20-pre-loaded-games/

Why are people not looking forward to seeing Twisted Metal on this thing?  That's something I'm REALLY hoping for!  Heck, I want to see TM1 and TM2 on here!

Then again, Sony is not Calypso.

100 dollars for 20 games... not a great deal. The nostalgia of the PS1 console/controller design & the HDMI port are the main selling points though, so I'm sure it'll sell.

There's 15 games unannounced so far, so there's probably only 1 Twisted Metal game among them. Maybe Jet Moto and/or Warhawk could be on it though.

Not worth it all because of PSN and the PS3. I can play PS1 games on my PSP that I bought from PSN and the PS3 can already run PS1 discs in HD. If only one Twisted Metal game is gonna be there it will have to be TM2. There's no reason Tomb Raider 2 to be absent on it. That's one of the best.

I think the mini trend is stupid. If this has Twisted Metal on it, I would want it ONLY as a collector’s piece. The only cool thing about the SNES mini was the fact its the exclusive way to actually own Star Fox 2.

I wonder if Croc and the Legend of the Gobbos makes an appearence. It ended up a Greatest Hits title. It’d be safe to bet on Gran Turismo 2 as well if the rights are in order.

So far its a no for me.

And expecting me to preorder and only tell me 5 games? Insult my intelligence why don't you. None of the games mentioned so far are even rare or hard to come by so it's really hard too say yes to this thing at the moment.

also all the games shown in the 5 you can get for 5 bucks or less depending on the source.

exactly. you can still buy a bunch of PS1 games on PS3's PSN Store for about 5 dollars each. So 100 dollars, not including tax, for 20 games... is basically 5 dollars per game. No deal at all from Sony for a bundle of games. Cheap bastards.

It's all about that vintage playstation design, which sony abandoned with ps2 & onwards. PS1 Mini is a cute novelty 90s nostalgia item that only has real value to people who never even played 20 ps1 games.

The thing about the SNES mini, or NES mini, is the old methods of playing them wore out for me and the new device was nostalgic. Even then, I was seriously irritated they didn't give it a cartridge slot or at least the ability to download more games.

Now for the Playstation ... I still have my old one. There's my nostalgia. I also have a PS2, and a PS3.

Stick a disk reader on it (cheap tech these days) and I'll perk up.

Honestly, Sony needs to get its retro crap together. PS4 can't even play PS1 digital games I bought. Pisses me off.

The main reason I bought the SNES Mini is so I can record SNES games in HD and have it full screen. I don't know how to do that with emulators. Also I can't use my real SNES anymore because one of the pins for the plug is bent and I can't reposition it so I can't turn on the SNES. The original Startfox is still best played on ZSNES 1.42 where the framerate is faster. I know Sony has a history of copying what Nintendo does but copying the Mini consoles is stupid when they have PSN and the PS3.

I'd laugh if the only TM it had on it was TM 3.

Sony is honestly so clueless with their classic franchises, they probably would put TM3 or 4 in it.

Can we honestly say they know or care about our community at all? Probably not.

Although, if they were smart enough to put TM2 uo as a classic, maybe we'll get lucky.

They very well may put in TM III. That really would not surprise me.
It was commercially successful, a "greatest hits" title, and the first TM to be totally console-exclusive (since 1&2 had PC versions).
I'm almost kind of rooting for it to happen because that shit would be hilarious.

If Sony were smarter they would have included a PSN store on PS1 Mini where you could buy PS1 games, so people could add to the 20 already built-in.

and yeah, It's bullshit that it's not possible to play any PS1 games on PS4. I don't see why they don't add them to PS Now. It'd make that streaming app more popular if you could stream games from all playstation generations.

I think you are missing who the audience for this is. Yes there are a ton of PS1 games you can buy on PSN if you own a PS3. But most people who will be buying this probably don't own a PS3 or PS4. This console is targeting older Playstation fans who have fallen off with gaming and would like something to play some of the old games on.

The hardest of the Hardcore Playstation fans will also buy this and the oldest generation of PS fans will buy up this thing. Sometimes people just want an easy way to play games they remembered playing 20 years ago. I think the fact that the previous "mini" consoles from Nintendo were hackable which helped provide value to people who can add hundreds of games to the system.

Sometimes people just want an easy way to play old games and these mini-consoles are designed for older gamers who don't have access to the PSN. This thing will sell well and I would be shocked to not see Twisted Metal 1 or 2 on the North American version of the console.

I would consider picking it up myself as I have 50 dollars in Best Buy credit and I have no clue what to spend it on so this might just make for either a good gift or something to put under the TV.

Most of us that have said we are not interested is that "older" PlayStation crowd. though most of us have at least ps3 if not a ps4 So I can't say any of us have completely fallen off gaming in the last decade.

Hardest of the hardcore would buy Playstation branded shit logs if they were available  That demographic, which is known as the early adopters, is quite a small percentage, even though that is were advertisers and marketing tend to focus for some reason.

I don't agree with it being an easier way to play these games, but I do agree if hackers get into the system and learn things from it might get us better emulators, but that's all it really owns up to. Also with stores like V-stock, Ebay and Amazon you can get some of these games from 2-5 bucks. instead of spending 100 for a bunch of chaff you wont ever play.

Really what it is is them riding the coat tales of Nintendo and trying to cash in on nostalgia and hipster trends.

See this I can agree with though. If you have it why not? Maybe we'll get surprised and some rare gems that are 100+ might be on there, but I don't think I'd get my hopes up.

If you do. Let us know how it is, and what games are on it. I'd like to hear some opinions on this from the people who do buy them.

I was more so talking about who the audience for the system in general is. I think often times fans who this isn't appealing to (like a lot of people on this board) can often forget the different audiences a product is trying to attract.

I know a lot of people on this board specifically have PS3's and PS4's and would just buy PS1 games on those systems. But there is a huge audience out there that fell off gaming with the PS2 or PS3 and no longer have those systems. The PS1 classic is $100 with the games already loaded onto there. That's way cheaper than buying a PS3 and buying all the games onto it.

It's cashing in on nostalgia for sure but there is a market for a simple way to play older games that people remember playing back in the day. The generation that was kids and teens/20 somethings when the PS1 was in its heyday are now in their late 20's to mid 40's. Now is the time to capture that audience's attention again. I don't think it is necessarily hipster either. Just more so hey we have this bigger audience that might have fallen off but still remember these games lets cash in like Nintendo did.

I have about 100 SNES games hacked onto my SNES mini and I pretty much play that more than I play my PS4 at this point. The plug and play nature of those systems, the original controllers they come with, and the fact that they are fairly affordable compared to buying a PS3/4 and the individual games which could cost more than double.

If the system is easily hackable and provides good overall emulation than I probably pick it up once the supply is easy to attain. I have a PS3 with Twisted 1, 2, and Black on there but if I can hack over 100 additional PS1 games onto there than I have basically everything I could have ever wanted to play on the PS1 on a plug and play system with original controllers.

And yes I know you can make a retro Pi. but having the original controllers to me makes a huge difference. Yes there are good retro knockoffs but nothing captures playing old games like playing them on their authentic controllers.
