Horrifying Horror Movies

Halloween is coming and goddammit I'm going to actually celebrate it this year. Not gonna spend a day of October without doing something Halloween related. With that being said, I'm trying to make a 31 movie long list to kill (no pun intended) time with at night with my wife. Suggest some good horror movies. The more disturbing the better. I haven't seen a lot of the classics (Child's Play and the original Nightmare on Elm Street, etc) but they're on the list.

I'll start with one I've watched recently called Terrifier. Its on Netflix now.

Don't watch the red band trailer, it has some spoilers in it. Really fucking great throwback to old school slasher films. Great kills and a superb villain. Has one of the most gruesome kills I've seen. Think "Saw" times two.

This ones pretty well known but one of my favorites. Rob Zombie’s “House of 1,000 Corpses” has got some memorable characters and decent gore. Good horror, but nor particularly scary. Has some comedy elements in it and Captain Spaulding is the shit. I prefer this to the sequel, “The Devil’s Rejects” which takes a different tone.

Love House of 1000 Corpses, but yeah, it's more disturbingly entertaining than it is scary, like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series.
Been awhile since I've seen The Devil's Rejects, but I do remember the tone being very different.
Then there was The Lords of Salem and 31 (which you alluded to). Lords was a bit like Rosemary's Baby. 31 was as close a movie to Twisted Metal as Rob Zombie will ever make (clowns in a deathmatch contest & all).

But as much as I like horror movies I rarely find any of them scary. There are concepts which can be scary when you imagine yourself as the victim... like being stuck a death-trap (Cube, Saw), being stuck at a haunted location (The Shining, House on Haunted Hill), encountering dangerous, creepy ET lifeforms (Alien, Invasion of the Body Snatchers), or being the target of a serial killer (The Silence of the Lambs, Psycho) or supernatural force (Nightmare on Elm Street, vampire movies, and so on).

But it's all just entertainment to me.

A Halloween double entendre—featuring puns! 31 is on the list and so is The Shining, Nightmare on Elm and Alien. I’ve got some catching up to do on the classics. I loved the Saw movies but havent looked at much about the newest Jigsaw movie. Remember that one fucking scene in one of the later Saw movies where the group of people have to spread their fingers to cut their arms on a table-saw blade? Yeesh.

I enjoyed the Babadook (check for anagrams if you’re feeling frisky.) It doesn’t have the artillery to really hold up anything new and the kid makes you want to punch him in the fucking face but the villain is pretty spooky. The premise is meh and so is the ending but the tone is good throughout.

A double for today is basically a whole series. The first two are fantastic and the fourth is great. Not sure Ive even finished the third, as it was forgettable. If you haven’t seen Insidious, you’re missing out. Great psychology behind the horror and excellent visuals. A few tropes and plot holes but nothing horrible. And the monsters are great. Some good scenes to be found here.
