Kick, Punch, It's all in the mind - Fighting games

I decided to start this thread because one of my favorite fighting games is about to come back as a soft reboot and god does it need it.

The first fighting game I ever received was in 1995 and went by the name of Battle Arena Toshinden.

...

By todays standards this fighter is a bit slow and clunky, but back in 95' this was the shit. This was one of the first fully 3d fighters with weapon combat. The game also had some flashy special moves to boot.

My main in this game was known as Eiji. Some young, katana wielding punk with a over confidence issue.

...

In my family we'd often play tournaments and sometimes it would degrade down to just cheesing certain moves and then learning to counter them. It was all a good time.

Not to long after this I pretty much stayed out of the fighting game scene, Played a little tekken 2 on an old demo I had, besides that I wouldn't play another fighting game until Tekken 5.

...

This is where I was introduced to the glory known as team battles and loved every minute of it. Because I mostly team battled I can't really say I had a main, but some of my best characters where Jin, Kazuya, and Bruce. Kazuya being one of my favorites.

...

Go figure another character with an even worse attitude.

During this time, I was introduced to what would become my favorite 3d fighter.

Soul Calibur II

...

This was the shit. Kinda took me back to Arena Toshinden. Faster Pace, Smooth Gameplay and an "adventure mode" just made this the best to me. Not to mention the Team Battle mode. Something sadly missed in new fighting games.

I couldn't tell you how many hours I put into this game, but even after unlocking all of the characters and goodies it still got playtime, even until Soul Cailbur 3 came around.

This was another game where I played almost all of the cast, so again, I didn't necessarily have a main.

Often in the team battles between me and my Cousin it would come down to who ever's Nightmare won. After than it was a clean sweep. So we started putting nightmare as our last characters until we got much better with the rest of the cast.

From here on in I pretty much stuck with Soul Calibur as my only fighting game. Dabling in a little Tekken when they came out, but something happen.

With Soul Calibur IV, the gameplay was great, but the game itself was slim on modes and content. I stuck around with it despite this because I loved the gameplay. Not to mention the shoehorned Algol character that had no reason to be there, much like guest characters, but they are easily ignored.

At this point the game got a bit strange and started to break its own rules. Then we come to Soul Calibur 5

Gameplay wise there is nothing wrong with this game at all. A few things where changed and the addition of a gaurd impact gauge was added. Some find it an improvement, while others don't. I don't really care for it myself.

But in this was the return of a full fledged story mode, but unfortunately it was a hobbled mess. The main character was terrible. The plot was terrible and the whole thing stunk of incest jokes.

So right then I spent the least amount of time with soul cailbur 5. I wasn't happy with the direction it took and put it down and so did  Namco Bandai and for the best I believe. The direction of the game was kind of spiraling out of control and you could tell the writers backed themselves in a corner.

With all that said, we are finally getting a new Soul Calibur and it is going back to the original Soul Calibur as a soft reboot and restarting the franchise. Like I said before, it needs it.

Tekken picked up the ball that Street Fighter dropped in 1995.

Tekken however held on to the ball, and a total of nine Tekken games were created over a 22 year period.

The only one I never bought was Tekken 4 and it did not seem to be that great.

All the Tekken games I bought never dissapointed me with the acception of Tekken 7, the only Tekken game for the PS4

Tekken 7 in my opinion was boring, had a bad story line, great features from past Tekkens were taken out, and a total lack of creativity and effort.

With so many people involved with the development I was wondering why it was so bad, I guess the creators were just not hungry anymore, just like most other games these days.

After being hooked on video games for over 39 years I'm sorry to say that the video game industry offers very little in the form of quality, and fun.

The industy is DEAD.  (for now).

I now spend my time and money on other things.

To the current members of the video game industry, you should all quit your jobs and find other careers before you turn this industry into something that only caters to morons.

Trailer shown for SC6 that includes all the game modes. Looks like its finally going to be a full game again.

Streets of rage 4 is a thing. Dunno how I feel about it. Axel looks like an Alcoholic homeless man. Besides that, Blaze is on point.

Liked fighters. always sucked at em. Never could keep up with the controls to be even decent.

Mortal Combat and Primal Rage were my faves.

Yo, you can't spell Mortal Kombat without a K.
That's where the REAL spirit of the game emerges!  When they hear the name, the first thing that comes to mind is...FATALITY!

Lost faith in MK when X causes my system to freeze and crash over and over. Fuck that noise.

Only 2d fighter I play now is Guilty Gear:

Been playing the series off and on since XX. Great fighting game combined with heavy metal to boot.

(Why the convoluted name? because guilty gear XXX wouldnt sell in america. Guilty gear Xrd)

Fuck yeah, Primal Rage was the shit. I used to play a lot of that at a local pizza place that had a cabinet for it.

I play a lot of a fighting game called Skullgirls now. Hand drawn animation and pretty fluid game mechanics.

Obviously the game designers did that as an artistic decision to enrich the depth of the game. Hand animating each individual boob like that. Even the monster character has tits.

...

I really like the older Capcom titles too. The original Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is fun and so is Marvel vs Capcom 1 and 2.

DarkStalkers is the only fighter I enjoyed by capcom. I could not get into street fighter or any of it's ilk.

Also capcom keeps teasing with shit like this but we all know they will never make another:

And on a side note the Japanese actually DOWNSIZED Felicia's boobs in this for SFV. Usually it's the opposite.

what i liked most about battle arena toshinden was the intro lol
https://youtu.be/FCSAs94rpm4

Primal Rage was definitely cool. If you like that game you'd like Jurassic Park: Warpath on PS1.

Also, who remembers ClayFighter?

And Adonael, I never had those problems in Mortal Kombat XL where I'd freeze/crash. Guess I'm lucky. As for the game, I like it. I thought the DLC fighters were more interesting (Tarkatan Alien & Predator, Bo Rai Cho, Tri-Borg, Tremor, Tanya, Goro). I didn't like Jason or Leatherface though, I would have preferred a playable Rain and some other old MK character.
Didn't much care at all for the new characters on the main roster. I mostly ignored them and used classic characters. Played as Kano the most.
Street Fighter V similarly had a problem with creating new characters that had the impact that the classic characters had. Players want Sagat, Blanka, and Akuma, not FANG, Rashid, and Necalli.

Hell yeah, Mosh. Clay Fighter was king. I had it for N64 years ago but sold it when I was strapped. I seen it at a flea market about six months ago...but the guy running the booth was wanting a mint for it.

There were so many awesome fighters throughout the years but one I hold to high esteem is Power Stone 2 for Dreamcast. It really added more interaction with the levels...like the one where you start off on an airship...it blows up and forces you to fight while you free fall and then you finish the round off on the ground.

I always wanted a Power Stone 3 but the chances are so remote at this point.

I don’t like Street Fighter either Adonael. Darkstalkers 3 was always pretty good though. I find it a little clunky compared to others mostly due to the roster of characters. They’re good, and I dont play competitively, but I never found one character I really synergized with like in other fighting games.

I’m not crazy about 3D fighters except for Capcom’s Rival Schools which is actually the Power Stone Dim Shades is talking about. The newer Naruto games are fluid, simple and have good visual effects. Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 comes to mind. Anime fan or not, its super cheap to pick up and play. DragonBall Z Budokai Tenkaichi is a fun 3D fighter too.

And ClayFighter looked fucking awesome visually. So did the OG Killer Instinct.

I also echo Mosh when he says he had no issues with Mortal Kombat X.
