Random Thoughts as a Developer
07/22/18 at 10:58:02

A few months ago I begun prototyping a small RPG. Something I wasn't really comfortable about talking about until today.

Recently I've been working on this project non-stop on my free time which is far and few in between.

When I was younger this was something I always wanted to do, but I never realized how much work it actually was until I started doing it seriously. I really have a new found respect for the massive teams and what they go through.

Currently I can't even call our project an Alpha build, but it is getting there. I recently hired a programmer (which isn't cheap) to help me with programming a battle system I cooked up in my mind with some inspiration from pre-existing RPGs. That may be done in a few months time. (Implementing the battle system all animations etc. etc.) to get to a playable and testable build.

Once that happens (Bar nothing exploding as things tend to do in my life.) I would gladly show it off to the few folks at TMA that still frequent this site, just know it will be a very early build of such.

------------

For years I've wanted to do this as it has always been my passion to tell stories and create worlds in which other people can play and enjoy.

Years passed I tried when I was younger but for the first few years I didn't really understand what it entailed being so young. I was really ignorant.

On week days I work about 3-4 hours on this project, writing, art direction, world building, etc.
On Fridays I work a 8 hour shift at work and then work another 11 hours on this project. Saturdays is 24 hours and Sunday is a bit of poking around, but I tend to take these to rest.

Mind you real life things still happen, so I can't always work as much as I would like to.

I think the point I'm trying to get at is, It's possible if you really want it and you have the means to do so. As long as you put in the hard work and dedication you will get there. Don't give up.

well that's cool. Considering everything you've said in the life post, that's great.

Keep rolling with it. Never know what might come of it.

Yea. I think you would have to use that name for your 1st project release. Just to help give TMA some real credibility.

I'm sure those you present it to would completely understand.

No you see that's my design for twisted metal V. Your car is about the size of a walnut and the levels are the size of four desk. It will be the best twisted metal game.

I think sweet tooths design should be a gay rodieo clown with assless chaps and calypso riding behind him the whole time.

Cheesy

Do you have any information on your current project? Like an official website, Instagram, or even Ich page?

I'd be interested in following your process.

I've beeen working on several projects myself. Well mainly 2. The RC game I've shilled here before, and I'm putting together a smaller mobile boat racing game.

Mainly the boat racing game is for a few reasons.

#1, was to explore mobile development. I've only done PC development beforehand.

#2 was to explore some features Criminal Mischief (RC game) will have, without making the project files a mess. The main feature being opponent AI, because I really don't know jack squat about programming any type of racers. The second feature, was general memory management. How do I let a player choose a vehicle, track, and load that specific scene with the specific vehicle. How do I save that progress (times, unlocks, etc) to the system. It's those features that a lot of developers just forget about. I love gameplay and art too, but there's some more technical stuff that gets forgotten.

I've done scene loading and score saving before, but I honestly forget, it's been so freaking long.

It's all in the name of learning and fun though. If I get this little racing title on the android store, I'll be happy. I don't really care about making money, it's more important to get to the finish line with a complete and published product.

If I get any playable demos I'll share some links on here.

The hardest part for me right now is finding a real well paying job. I just graduated and am striking out everywhere in the game development field. They want senior level experience for junior level positions. It's fucking ridiculous. I've also heard nothing but bad things about developing in the US. Basically we get taken advantage of, but what else is new?

It's so much bullshit, that I've started looking at graphic design and marketing positions (I interned at a marketing firm for a year).

I feel like I'm leeching off of my family, mainly my mom, but I'm too afraid to get a temp job in my home town. What if I get stuck in this dump? I know I'm probably a lazy good for nothing, but it's just those thoughts that run through my head. I don't want to settle on anything outside of what I learned from my degree.

I just want to move to Texas, California, or Washington. Anywhere but here, far away from my deranged family, and dying home town.

Ugh. Life is fucking hard.

No I don't have any type of page to follow. Right now at this early stage of production there is no reason to go toting it around on the internet. But like I said once the combat system ground work is done, I'll be making a small build to demo the combat system.

I am currently using a heavily modified game engine, yes. I'm currently doing this to suit my needs since my programming is very limited.

I'd much rather use a different system to better suit my needs, but after all it's just me working on this and outsourcing what I cannot possibly learn/do myself in a timely manner.

Just using Unity for my current two projects.

They aren't demanding enough for Unreal, and I really like the rapid development you can get with Unity.

The worst part of the engine are the shaders in my opinion, but with the right tweaking, you can get rid of that "made with Unity" look. Post processing really helps too.

How do shaders work in Unity? Do you have to write the code for them or is there a "shader designer" system that doesn't require code?

I used MonoGame for the TM tools. It's only a framework for making 3D apps, not a complete game engine. It's actually an open source implementation of Microsoft's XNA framework from a while back. Messing around with MonoGame is great for anyone wanting to learn C# and 3D programming. You can even make apps for PS4, Xbox one.
