LAN server for TMPS3

Can we do to TMPS3 what we did to TMBO?

Would there still be connection issues with this?

Was this ever discussed?

Just wondering.

Without hacking the ps3 the answer is most likely no considering the server configuration is handled by the game itself and not able to be modified by normal means.

I think it would be possible to use XLink to play through LAN without getting too fancy. Granted, the online balancing tweaks won’t carry over to that mode.

I’m pretty sure hacks would be required to play the game through its online functionality using a private server, since you’d have to get past layers of connections with PSN and multiple servers the game attempts to communicate with otherwise.

Thankfully the servers are still up, and I personally think TM 2012 is going to stay up until the end of the PS3’s online life since SMS also maintains the PS All-Stars Battle Royale, and I can’t see that game going down until the rest of Sony’s exclusives are down for good.

True, I just thought if we can use the LAN option we can solve the connection issues.

It would make the game more tolerable.

I never said I hated the game, (played it for a month and enjoyed it) it was just my expectations were higher than what we got.

Sorry for going off topic but games are so bad these days I'm thinking about TMBO, and maybe even TMPS3 again

I can't believe how bad video games are these days, what the fuck happened?

Are they too expensive to make these days like Jaffe says, or is there just no talent out there, maybe companies just don't pay designers enough anymore.

Some of todays games are so bad I would not even play them 25 - 35 years ago.

Like this garbage http://www.ign.com/videos/2018/02/26/the-first-21-minutes-of-mulaka

And how does a game like this earn a score of 10.
http://www.ign.com/articles/2018/01/25/celeste-review

A game like this would not even receive a score of 2 back in 1985 how the fuck could earn a score of 10 33 years later.

How the fuck does that happen, someone please explain I'm going fucking nuts!!!!!!!!!!

Indies took over and the triple A market got stagnent. A lot of companies don’t like to take risks anymore and it’s not nearly as aggressive as it was in the 80’s and 90’s. Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony are the only consoles left that are in the public eye and they all grew complacent. The jump to 3D on the N64 had everyone clawing to release something hot and once that was achieved, there had to be a lot of aggressive branding and marketing of characters/exclusives.

I mean in the PS1/N64 era there were very obvious heavy hitters that were all very different being produced as system exclusives. Spyro, Crash, Twisted Metal, Gran Turismo and Final Fantasy dominated on the Playstation where as Banjo Kazooie, Mario, Mario Kart and Zelda sold the N64. But the key to those games were that they took different paths and risks. They were ground-breaking. There’s not as much ground to break nowadays. The jump to HD on the PS3/360 made it so games are just steadily getting graphically better, theres not as much incentive to go in a different direction.

In a triple-A title, the graphics are a huge focus, and sometimes they’re nice, but few focus on unique enviroments. Indies on the other hand often have decent gameplay or premise but execution falls short somewhere along the lines. The envelope doesn’t need to be pushed too far when shooters sell best.

That doesn’t go to say that a lot of good games haven’t came out recently. Resident Evil 7, Super Mario Oddysee, Breathe of the Wild and Dirt Rally are all good examples of games done right on current gen consoles. But for the most part, unqiue games like P.T. (Silent Hills) get fucked off to cancellation for one reason or another, and games that do release rely heavily on day one patches and other bullshit.

There’s really a lot more to be said about it too. Modern gaming has gems but it’s mostly stagnent to me.

I hate to beat a dead horse over the scale of TM 2012's issues, but in current day its issues with connectivity, lag, and freezes are miniscule in comparison to when the game launched. Typically it's only once in twenty or so lobbies that there's a freeze/disconnect, and the game can almost always handle up to 6v6 without server-side lag. Hit detection is pretty solid and most issues with latency in current day are a result of either a player's internet speed (especially the host's) or having players from a wide range of regions within a single lobby.

With that said, even the persisting issues wouldn't be acceptable in a modern AAA game, and the main reason why things are likely better these days is because how little load there is on the servers. There's still rare but annoying times when not all pickups register, and it will often take a couple or more attempts to join a lobby. But all in all, it hasn't been nearly enough for myself and many others to move past the game, nor in my opinion for someone to not try the game again if the server issues back in the day were the reason they dropped the game. Aside from a few unpopulated indie games there's nothing on the market that even resembles TM, and multiplayer games have been extremely underwhelming for the last few years.

I agree about games sucking these days. Also, if you do want to play TMBO you're welcome to join us. Our discord is stickied in brawl on the wall.

TMX's problems weren't just connecting online. I can't even get my TMX disc to start up most of the time when I try. It just goes into a black screen and never starts or gets stuck on loading. None of my other games have this problem because the studios behind most games are competent, but ESP and Jaffe didn't take responsibility/accountability w/ TMX, and it's a broken product. Telling a fan to go buy a new copy of the game and a new PS3 was pretty fucked up when the game was overheating & crashing systems left and right. As for online connectivity, I can't imagine it's as bad as it was before considering probably only 5 people play a week. But back when TMX launched and people were logging in to the server players were having games freeze all the time or having games disappear from the lobby, etc.
I can't really take any defense of the game seriously because of this.  I don't care if the new generation of games are boring (which I can't argue, that's true), a game should at least work properly and not inconvenience a customer. Had EatSleepPlay at least made a game that was reliable enough to start each time, then I could have been forgiving about the game, even if I didn't like the new story mode or a lot of the gameplay decisions. say what you will of 989 Studios TM games, but at least I knew those games would start if I tried playing them.

TMX was completely broken and was never fixed. Sony, ESP. and Jaffe really disappointed me and pretty much killed any chances of that game being successful. It is your obligation to the customer to put out a product that is functional. How you launch a game so fundamentally broken and then never fix the game is unfathomable. This was a $60 retail game for a franchise that was Sony's longest running and at that point had been a part of all of their platforms.

The issues with gameplay are a matter of taste and opinion. Personally, I really like the core gameplay homing issues aside. But without reasonable balance and functionality, it didn't matter how good or bad the gameplay was. I honestly can't think of a major $60 game that not only launched completely broken but was never fixed properly.

I miss the days when "release now, patch later" wasn't a viable option.

With all that went wrong with Colonial Marines with its terrible launch, lazy development and underwhelming story, at least it is reliable enough where I know I can have the game run on the first try, find a TDM match online and play a few unbalanced rounds without the game freezing. It's sad how TMX makes Colonial Marines look like WarHawk in comparison.

And @tmfan, yeah, the core concept of TMX is fine. a Twisted Metal game with Team modes by all means should have been a success. I know much was made of homing weapons being too strong and how they couldn't be dodged ('TMX dodging' doesn't count lol) but even if that was fixed the game would still have had issues because of how the classic TM gameplay was simplified and exaggerated, w/ the 1-button freeze/shields, the ramming system that put low armor cars at a huge disadvantage, the 1-hit kill gimmicks (sniper rifle), the obnoxious health truck as if all the health pickups weren't enough... the controls weren't so classic TM either - the way you couldn't use the D-pad to drive, the switching of L2/R2 firing functions... the turbo-dash addition was unnecessary as well, as it forced a sixaxis motion sensor function into the game leaving people without the official sony ps3 controller fucked (although if you used small cars it wouldn't have mattered anyway).

and @marltoro, you would think with about 5 patches TMX would have eventually resembled a finished product like (any PS1 game)
