Reviving the TMB beta/demo disc
08/14/17 at 22:31:31

It's the moment you've all been waiting for! I have just recently ordered the original TMB demo disc and will be receiving it in the mail a few days later. And once I receive it, I'll be taking some pictures of some gameplay and sharing it with you all. Heck, I'll also share an ISO file of it so you can play it on your PS2 emulators.
Get excited, y'all! Cheesy

I have the demo disc, lol, there's nothing special about it. You just play as Sweet Tooth in Junkyard. There's also neat behind the scene footage but that was already uploaded to Youtube.

Well, I got it in the mail today and played it. It's actually pretty cool, but you are only able to play as either Sweet Tooth or Crazy 8 (both players can play as the same vehicle in multiplayer mode), and the battlegrounds take turns being either the junkyard or the suburbs. Here are some differences I found between this and the full version of the game (correct me if I'm wrong on any of these):

1. When a vehicle explodes, the driver does not come running out. Instead, you only hear him/her scream.

2. You can hear the plane fly overhead at the junkyard, but the plane is actually not there.

3. The CPU Sweet Tooth has a clear head on top of the truck instead of transparent (it's transparent for the player, though).

4. Yellow Jacket has TWO spikes extruding from each side of the cab, not one.

5. Roadkill's color is slightly altered. It's a bit blue in the Suburbs level, unless it's just the level's lighting.

6. The only vehicles that are actually in the game are Outlaw, Roadkill, Spectre, Yellow Jacket, Crazy 8, Sweet Tooth, and Axel. The rest are out. I saw so myself as I read through the disc's files.

7. There are only two environmental noises tracks for the Suburbs instead of three.

8. Only the battle music tracks of the Junkyard and Suburbs are played. However, I found the final enemy track for the Suburbs in the disc's files, but it was never used.

9. The behind-the-scenes video does not have the PlayStation Underground logo like in the video we've seen before. Plus, they no longer have the "Coming Summer 2001" text at the end of the video. Also, the video is slightly zoomed in; it could be in full screen.

That's all I can recollect from playing the demo. And here's the game ROM I promised.

The process also produced a CUE sheet. Just download it in case it's required.

If they don't work on your PS2 emulator, let me know.

Well in this trailer, Sweet Tooth fires lightning out of his hands for his special. He also is flying at 0:53. What the fuck.

I'm sure that was just some fun with the debug menu. I managed to use that code on the official version before, but it does not work on Suburbs, Freeway, Downtown, or Highway Loop. But I would not recommend you use it too often, otherwise the color palette will go crazy, and you will have to remove all the memory of the game and start over to fix it.

I find it odd they'd use debug features in an official trailer though. There's a ton of differences in that video though, visually and particle wise. The rets, explosion particles and stream behind the fire missiles was all different. The houses in Suburbs broke with a delay and had more collision. I have no idea what build this was, just interesting.

Edit: Does anyone know where this video is from? If it's on a demo disc somewhere I'd like to find a copy.

That was the amazing and brilliant E3 trailer from 2000 that brought the house down. PS2 hadn't come out yet and Twisted Metal's name had been dragged through the mud. The trailer announced that the original team was back and was a showcase for the PS2's power. I love that trailer and it was truly a high point for Twisted Metal.

Why are there differences? Quite frankly because the game still had over a year left. A lot of the weapons and game effects were just placeholders to be changed later. It's possible they had Sweet Tooth flying originally similar to 2012, but I think more likely he's driving on an uncompleted invisible ramp that was later removed. One of those still remains in a nearly impossible to reach spot in Skyscrapers.

Yeah that last part was what I was getting at. This is an amazing trailer just because of how beautiful the style was. If you put it in context of the time period, it's even better. Matter of fact, I like some things of the trailer better than the final release. Like the animation for the ricochet on Outlaw, and how JYD's Ricochet animation shows both the ricochet and the gas can if they had both in their inventory. My guess is this changed to accommodate faster gameplay due to less complex models. Or it's still in the final game, and I just haven't noticed.  Roll Eyes

Dark had a video on this. Not sure if different, But it is the review copy/beta of TMB.

It even had debug options to alter homing/damage parameters of everything!

Sorry, but that's not the same disc I have.

I've seen this before, and it's pretty weird how the music for the Freeway had been altered for the final version of the game. I wish I could find an MP3 for that.

I love this video. You'll believe a Junkyard Dog can fly.

I wish I could find one. I'd love to see the outer edges of the level design.
