Is Twisted Metal 2 worth getting on psn nowadays?

Because my little brother ruined our copy of that game back in the days, I ended up playing mostly TM4 in my youth, thus I now have only faint memories of TM2, if any at all...

So, with the game's legendary status in mind, I recently noticed that it is available on the psn for only 6 bucks !!!
Therefore, aside from being inexplicably excited about playing a 20 year old video game, I also have some concerns about the purchase, even though it costs only a symbolic prize ATM.

My question is primarily directed towards other TM fans who got the game for the ps3 first (if there are any of them present on this forum), since they won't be affected by nostalgic reasons while grading the game. I must underline that I don't really care about visuals, but I'm interested in knowing whether the gameplay still holds up today, or these two decades have made the game unplayable for someone who mostly plays modern games ?
Also, take note that only three months ago, I purchased both Suikoden 2 and Castlevania Sotn from the psn, and didn't have any trouble whatsoever in enjoying both of them extensively, cuz they are flawless in terms of gameplay, and one can't help but admire the genius in their overall game design.

Will I get the same feeling from Twisted Metal 2 ?

(Also, please don't refrain from answering my question simply because you got the game during the ps1 era, every insight on the game is helpful and will contribute towards my final decision about the purchase Cool)

I doubt you'll find anybody around these parts who played TM 2012 prior to any previous TM. Nonetheless, I can speak for everyone that TM2 is a must-play if you're a fan of vehicle combat. The mechanics are sound and the game has aged really well, largely because few other vehicle combat games from any era that can compare to it. The game is still played online on PC to this day. Be prepared for a steep learning curve and for cheap AI on the higher difficulties, as well as some RNG luck as to whether the AI takes health or destroys structures that house critical pickups. Just be sure to start on the easier difficulties and you'll be fine. Considering how little it costs to buy it on PSN, definitely go for it.

I'd do it. Pick up Twisted Metal 1 while you're on there, it's the same price. Personally, I think TM1 aged just as well as TM2, but that is definitely in the minority. I didnt play much TM2 when I was younger due to difficulty, so I play it more now. Up until a week ago, it was one of my least favorite TM's because of the controls. I ended up sitting down for a whole weekend and trying to get better, and it's pretty goddamn fun once you get past the learning curve. Hit detection on structures is frustrating because it richochets your car back. And learn the AA commands. If you are used to faster play styles, imo you need to definitely slow it down more in TM2. You'll bounce all over the place. I was more used to TMB and its playstyles. If  you havent played that, check it too, it's $9.99 on PSN and has aged extremely well. TM1 doesnt have co-op multiplayer if that matters to you, only 1v1. TM2 does however, which is a ton of fun. The menus are beautiful, graphics are too for being 20 years old. Definitely check it out, all three of them if you havent played all of them recently.

Also, does anyone else have any issues with the AA commands not registering well with TM2? Do you just have to enter them fairly slow? It seems like when I do it faster like in the other TM's it only registers approx. 1/2 the time.

Everybody that played the game has that problem. I think it has something to do with the framerate being shitty.

I don't agree with buying games that are 10+ years old, unless they're a physical copy. But, it's your choice man.

Thank you all for taking the time to share your experiences with TM2, I definitely have a much clearer picture now. I'll most likely get it soon, probably together with TM1.

And just for the record, I have TMBlack for both ps2 and ps3, and I play it even to this day, cuz it has the best setting, characters and stories in the whole series, IMO. I thought it was the best gameplay-wise as well until recently, but then I decided to give TMPS3 another shot...

I do have one more question about TM2 though: is there any legitimate way to unlock Sweet Tooth in the game, or is the code the only way ? Also, does finishing the game with all characters on hard unlock anything special ?

Keep it real guys  Cheesy

You unlock nothing for beating the game with every car on hard. You can't even use a memory card with it so you wouldn't be able to save the unlockables. The code is the only way to get Sweet Tooth. I think it's weird to make the main character of the series a secret character.

That always bugged the hell out of me when I was younger. Especially since Sweet Tooth is a pretty common enemy to spawn and his special always fucks shit up.

TM2, specifically tm2pc online, is the greatest game ever made. The fact that they have never even made anything comparable since is blasphemy, I have no idea how, they must not understand the genius of their creation.  We played tm2pc online for 10 years, 2v2, 3v3, even 4v4 team battles, was the greatest video game experience of all time, endless fun and yes endless evolution and steep learning curve for newbies.
