Mindfulness and the pursuit of understanding
12/06/16 at 18:50:05

One might ask me. Adonael\Blue What exactly is mindfulness? What is the point of trying to achieve something of the sorts?

Mindfulness is understand ones self inside and out. Knowing and understanding how we feel or why we do what we do. There are two parts to this, internal and external.

Internal is learning how to control your mind, becoming aware of the thoughts and how they present themselves, understanding your emotions and becoming aware of yourself.

External is focusing on the outside world. Paying attention to details around you, becoming more aware of your surroundings and people around you.

In in layman's term it is simply understanding.

A important thing to remember is being mindful is not being perfect. All the logic and understanding in the world will never make you a perfect human being. We are creatures of sometimes unpredictable emotions.

Internal mindfulness can be achieved by using techniques such as meditation, thought exploring and lucid dreaming.

Challenge yourself.

Why did I act this way today? That is probably because...

This seems like a good idea. Why do I think this is a good idea?

Ask questions, learn from yourself. Once you learn these things you can start understanding yourself more. Have clearer thought and make better judgments on your own decision making process.

Some might ask why I say lucid dreaming is a important part of mindfulness. It’s partial for controlling and becoming aware of your dreams. The processes used in lucid dreaming is another technique used to control your mind and put yourself into a meditation like state, except unlike traditional meditation where you focus your mind, you are allowed to explore and wander your mind.

The only issue with said technique is it does increase the chances of sleep paralysis, which can be quite a scary thing for the first timer. The rest you need to know about lucid dreaming can be covered in various websites on the web.

External mindfulness is simply paying attention.

Lets look at external mindfulness as, the metaphor everyone uses, boxes.
If you pay attention to the people around you and the small facial twerks, the way they react, the changes in the iris and other body language you can start decoding people. And these reactions can be stored in a box for each individual.

Sally’s eyes widen and the blue becomes prominent when she is excited.

Dave grinds his teeth when annoyed.

Sometimes you can refer to some of these other boxes to build a new record for a new individual. This will help you to start understanding the people around you and your surroundings.

But there is more to pay attention to than just body language.

Listen. Think. Digest.

Of course it’s not just the people you have to be come mindful of, but the environment as well. On a walk pay attention to every detail. Think about possible situations. Consonantly monitor the area you are in. With enough practice acts like this become almost subconscious and you’ll start to think of more and more possibilities.

Sort these possibilities each in their own boxes to be recalled at a later date. Much like that one movie you pull off the shelf once a year, these boxes will always be there on the shelf when needed.

The more you do these things and the more you think and learn, the more possibilities there are. The greater your understanding the more in tune you become with life and the things around you. Simply the smarter you will become.

This goes up to 23 short videos. These 6 seemed the most interesting to me so far.

Egoism VS Altruism

From my understanding Egoism is the  action of pursuing ones self interest as long as it is beneficial for both parties. Altruism is the action of committing a self sacrifice for the benefits of others.

In this case Egoism would seem the better outlook because it's a win for everyone, or it only effects yourself instead of sacrificing your happiness, time money for absolutely no benefit.

That's not to condemn selfless acts though. I can be a very altruistic person for the people I love. In general I am not out to benefit from my actions, but I do protect and still pursue my self interest when need be.

I am not saying I am a perfect person by any means, but a balance in Selflessness and self-interest seems like a better philosophy to me.

And I don't mean becoming selfless completely, but more towards our thoughts and beliefs. Don't hold other people to our own self interest. What they want to do or pursue is up to them and doesn't  effect you in the end goal.

That's all I have on this thought train for today and even thought this is LABEL heavy, labels themselves can be a dangerous thing if you choose to live by them completely, narrowing your thought and perception of things. That limits your knowledge and ability to understand other perspectives. Labels are a way of describing one's self, but humans are dynamic and forever changing. So for a lack of a better term, Lables don't exactly stick.
