I thought John Doe was a good addition to the series. Was one of the most sane characters in the whole game, and thus met a grisly fate at the hands of Calypso for his wish of uncovering his past. That's how twisted Needles Kane's world is, unfortunately...

roadkill was my favorite car,  but the amnesia ploy gets old after oh, 9 million stories.

So when it comes to the Doe I'm indifferent.
