Interested in VR?

I am. But not with the current hardware. The price point would be a turnoff for most people. Still I can deal with that. Save for what you really want and all that. What I can't deal with is a heavy headset that you gotta strap on your face. Combined with wires sticking out of the back of your head. With the cherry on the top being that you need half a room devoted to the VR device.

Compound that with the fact most of the games are essentially X-box Arcade throwaways. Or something that seems like it belongs on a cellphone with it's limited interface. I just can't get excited for it right now.

We'll see how PS VR does. Interesting a console is taking on VR. Perhaps the PS4 Pro will pack enough power to make it an affordable and fun experience. At least fun enough more funding goes into creating better and less intrusive hardware.

But in it's current form the return you get for your money sucks. The hardware itself is too bulky and obnoxious to wear. It demands too much personal space for the average person to devote to it. Also the software feels mostly like proof of concept alphas. Rather than fully fleshed out games.

That being said. I think it will work amazingly well with anything vehicular related. Space sims, racing, air combat, and such. Anything you are sitting in a cockpit with.

All the standing and moving around VR shit is horribly limited and frankly obnoxious to play. At least considering the weight of the goggles and the wiring concerns.

Still make me a Twisted Metal or Armored Core with VR and you've sold me. Just as long as it's a fully fleshed out game and not a tech demo i'll be finished with in a week.

Well I pre-ordered the Playstation VR just in case since those puppies were selling out as quickly as they went up for pre-order. I keep going back and forth on whether I'm going to cancel it or not but I think they sold me on it when they decided to include an 18 game demo disc which is a brilliant move in my opinion because at least then you can really see what the device has to offer without needing to actually buy a bunch of VR games before you try them.

And then also if I decide I don't want it I can just flip it seeing as how these units are going to be hard to find for who knows how long after launch unless Sony have plans to start rolling out more before X-mas which I have to imagine they will. This makes it a little easier to go ahead with the purchase since I could probably at least sell it back for what I bought it for if not more if I do have the buyers remorse I'm scared of.

The unfortunate thing about VR seems to be that none of the major players in the triple A space are really committing too much to VR right now outside of maybe Insomniac which makes sense because they want to see how it does before investing a lot of time and money into VR but at the same time, great games will drive interest so its a double edged sword where both needs the other for the VR platforms to flourish.

Unfortunately those are the type of experiences I want in VR, something like Witcher 3 or Skyrim where I can roam around in an open world, explore and fight shit but for whatever reason so many devs are saying that controlling a character in those types of games in VR, especially first person games, just feels off or makes people sick so someone needs to figure this out first and foremost because I'm not of fan of just standing in place shooting shit or teleporting around from place to place.

I was impressed with the Batman: Arkham VR footage I've seen. Atmospheric VR games have an attraction, but I do not see the hardware being too popular after the initial hype dies down. The price is too high obviously but more than that I don't think people like wearing the VR sets over watching a monitor. Most gamers will likely not embrace the PS Move wands. Then there's the gameplay limitations to this new tech. I think VR is not suited to any fast-paced action game as of yet that I'm aware of. It seems like I might enjoy watching youtube videos of VR gameplay more than actually playing it, and in an age where people enjoy watching gameplay vids as much sometimes more than playing the actual game, I don't see how the PS VR business can exactly boom. But we'll see. If it turns out to be a success maybe a lot more effort will be put in software to create VR games that would take more than a day to complete. As it is now, it's not worth the money, but has the potential to grow a big fan-base of VR enthusiasts, especially with the PS4 having become stagnant as of late.

In short, and I will elaborate later, but PSVR is the absolute fucking shit. WAY better than I thought it would be. This tech really needs to catch on because its fucking phenomenal. Do not regret this purchase at all so far.

PSVR looks like the best route right now. I'm mostly interested in it due to the fact the headset looks significantly more comfortable than the VIVE or Oculus. The move controllers look like shit. But that being said i'd rather use a normal controller anyhow. Looks like that is the direction a lot of PSVR devs are taking too.

I really want to like the VIVE because the visuals and controls are top tier. But when you gotta strap a ton of cables to your skull, then set up a huge open space for VR. It just wants too much. Plus the whole walking around with a VR headset thing isn't my favorite thing to do.

Oculus looks alright but i'd rather give it a year and see where that company goes. Last thing I want is to buy one of these PC VR headsets just for the company to sandbag and fuck off.

Kinda hoping a cellphone company sees how oddly the PC VR shit is being handled and just slaps a 8k cellphone into a headset. I can deal with a high price as long as i'm just buying the parts I want. PSVR does the best job at that. You don't have to buy motion controls and a bunch of extra shit if you aren't interested in it.

VR as it is going right now is pretty interesting, but the use of teleportation to help with motion sickness and the area limit of a normal front room restricts the experience for me.

Don't get me wrong, this stuff is amazing and something I never thought I'd see, but until something like this;

Is affordable for home, I'm not super interested. Yeah Ignore the idiot in the video.

I'm enjoying PSVR. But the resolution leaves a lot to be desired. Hopefully the PS4 Pro can mitigate a lot of that with higher in game resolution and better AA filtering. As a lot of the PSVR games look like PS3 games with graphical fidelity lowered a bit to meet the 60FPS standard.

I would have gone with the Oculus. But I'm not confident software support will keep moving forward. The fact there are 2 VR headsets competing for a monopoly on software sales is concerning. I don't want to buy an Oculus just to find out a game I really want isn't supported. I'm sure as hell not buying multiple VR Headsets so I can have full access to the available VR library either.

HTC Vive is very interesting. I love that Valve is backing it as they're generally pretty fair to the consumer. But requires too much space. The headset is too heavy and cumbersome too. I'm excited to see what their next model is however. I'm hoping for something more like the PSVR with a less space hungry configuration. Along with a lighter and more intelligently designed headset.

At the end of the day I think the PSVR wins because it's comfortable to wear and I believe the game developer support will be better on console. In addition to the fact the PS4 Pro will likely solve a lot of my complaints about graphic fidelity.

That being said I will absolutely get a PC VR device in the future. I'm mostly waiting for them to make a more comfortable headset. The PSVR one is more comfortable by a wide margin. The fact they made it so light is one thing. But it's so easy to wear headphones over it too.

I will say however the motion tracking leaves a bit to be desired. It's not nearly as good as the HTC Vive in that regard. But I'm not really looking to grab around at 3D shit in my living room. That kind of thing is a novelty to me and i'll get tired of it quickly.

You all know my feelings on this, but I'll reiterate (briefly).

PSVR will win the initial VR race, because of the software stack that only Sony has. Sony can get the multiplatform games that are on all other platforms, and still release a dozen or more exclusive games a year for the next 3 years at least. There are DEFINITELY some VR games exclusive on other platforms, but it will probably be 3-4 a year, if that.

That being said, I've done well so far, and I have not yet purchased any of the new consoles/hardware/VR sets yet, instead I am liquidating my consoles (except PS4), laptops, Apple tech, and thin clients from work into a top of the line (or close) gaming rig. I'll eventually get a VR set down the line but I'll wait until the realm is a little bit more realized.

I do have high hopes for VR though, much more than I do with 3D gaming. I think VR is a great opportunity not only for gameplay, but movies, storytelling (MGS-type interactive scenes), even things only found in stores like interactive house tours, job training, drivers ed courses. Being a computer virtualization guy, I think VR software has the capabilities to be huge in homes, businesses, classrooms, even top level government training programs. Literally limitless in possibilities.

Yeah Sony despite being not as huge as they once were. They still have a far larger market share than Oculus and HTC Vive.

The primary consumers of gaming and electronics are still younger people. They aren't going to get a $1,700 gaming rig and a $800 headset. They won't even know where to get one. So even though Valve has great 3rd party developer support for the Vive. They cannot compete with Sony in regards to getting the hardware in peoples hands. The Steam Machines are a great example of that. No customer interest.

Many of the Vive and Oculus games are being ported to the PS4. PS4 Pro is coming out soon which will address the lack of graphical fidelity. All in a package the younger audience can recognize and ask for.

I'm with you on a lot of it Scold. The PSVR is more of a curious luxury buy for me. But I'm enjoying it a whole lot more than I thought I would. I think the next round of hardware will really cement VR in as something serious. Rather than a luxury item.

The design of the PSVR headset is great and super comfortable. Only problem I have with it is its really difficult to drink beer with the headset on, lol. I haven't used anything other than the Gear VR but the fact that the googles aren't being pressed against your face is a real plus.

The thick cable coming off the back and hanging down behind your back or off to your side, depending on what you try to do to get it out of the way, is a bit annoying sometimes but that's just par for the course with all VR headsets right now other than Gear VR. Thankfully if you do any sort of standing VR you aren't really moving around too much unlike the Vive which is room scale.

So far I haven't really had any issues with the camera reading my position and even the motion controllers aren't that bad at all. There were a couple demos like TumbleVR and Wayward Sky I played that were a bit wack where clearly the devs just didn't program shit right but most of the major titles you'd actually want to play are super solid from my experience. Sometimes, in certain games, the world will do these micro shifts that apparently make some people sick, but I barely experience this and when I do it doesn't bother me. As far as I can tell, there is nothing I've played in VR that makes me sick, nauseous, or uncomfortable though I always assumed this would be the case. I don't know why so many people and reviewers out there are having a hard time playing and experiencing VR without getting sick as no one I know or have let try PSVR has gotten motion sick at all. I think some of these gaming outlets need to start paying me to review VR games because apparently I'm cut out for it because my stomach isn't made out of vagina skin.

Yes the resolution isn't ideal but honestly it doesn't bother me because as a 3D lover, this was always the dream; being completely immersed in 3D 360 degree game worlds. Once you're in there having a cool VR experience the resolution and screendoor effect just fade away for me. The novelty of being able to look all around you supersedes any resolution gripes, especially if the graphical fidelity is higher.

If you got the bundle with the camera and move controllers, the pack in VR Worlds is a great way to get initiated into VR. The way the game loads up and even the interactivity in the main menu with the ball that changes properties depending on what game you are hovering over is a super awesome way to get a feel for what VR is like. Into the Deep which is the underwater shark cage experience is a cool starting point, especially if you are trying to show this off to someone who has never done VR or plays video games. London Heist is dope as fuck and shows more what a triple A experience could be like. VR Luge is the only really weak game of the bunch as its not fun, graphically boring, and doesn't really make you feel like you are riding a luge board down a busy highway. Danger Ball is surprisingly fun for such a simple concept. I like to pop it in every now and again for a quick experience. Scavengers Odyssey was a real surprise for me though as I knew nothing about it before hand. For me, this game is proof of concept that you can freely control a character in first person in VR the traditional way with right and left sticks while looking around independently with your head although the idea that you are in a mech and so your head is technically separate I think makes it feel more comfortable. I still don't understand why all first person VR games can't control like this but I must be in the minority.

Batman VR is clearly the highlight of the launch lineup. It's a fucking fantastic VR experience from beginning to end with lots of cool chapters where you do and experience different things. To me, this is the proof of concept for the technology hands down.

I really like Until Dawn: Rush of Blood as well. The cheesy dark carnival theme park rollercoaster ride mixed with old school light gun gameplay is a perfect fit for VR. Jump scares are a dime a dozen in horror games these days. Its always expected, but when they happen in this game and in VR they really scare the fuck out of you. I screamed out loud multiple times while playing this game and its hilarious. There are enough levels, which are fun to replay, that I feel like this is one of the stronger launch titles, especially for the 20 dollar price point.

I feel like no one is really talking about Bound though. Its an indie game that came out a couple months ago before PSVR launched and I was interested in it then but when they added VR support I definitely had to pick it up and its been one of my favorite VR experiences thus far. Its this weird abstract simplistic platformer where the main characters motions were all motion captured by a real life professional ballerina so the movements are all very fluid and dance like. Its a hard game to try and explain but its a really neat game to play in the traditional way in 2D on a tv screen but becomes really incredible when played in VR. Its one of the only VR games I've played where I really felt like I was in another world. You switch between stationary cameras as you guide your character through the world which is a bit old school and annoying at first until you get used to it but it actually creates these really cool angles that make it fun to look around at in VR as you really get a sense of the scale of things, especially this huge creature that's stalking you the whole game. I think I spent about 4-5 hours playing through this and really enjoyed it so this is another game that for the 20 dollar price point I think is a solid purchase because its completely different than anything else on offer at launch and if you just want to chill out, smoke some weed or do some drugs this is a cool mindfuck of a game. If I ever do LSD again, this will be the first thing I do, lol.

So far those are the only games I've bought myself but I have tried all the demos and free stuff which I will briefly run through some of below:

DriveClub VR: if there is one thing I want to play in VR its a racing game but the demo level wasn't that impressive visually, especially considering that I've played the actual DriveClub game and visually its one of the better racing games I've played this gen if not the best. I hear the full game is actually pretty meaty for a VR game and some of the tracks are visually more appealing but I think I'm gonna hold off on this one for now until later when I'm running out of new VR experiences or it becomes a bit cheaper.

Thumper: I hate rhythm games with a passion and think they are the biggest wastes of time a human being could ever par take in, so this one doesn't do that much for me but there are people out there that put this in their best games of the year list. I don't get it but whatever. To me, this is just like a giant never ending quick time event set to some pretty cool oppressively dark percussive music with a very late 70s progressive rock album aesthetic. Add in VR to the equation, as this game can be played without VR, and I'm a bit more interested but this would be something I'd grab on sale or when I've run out of more interesting VR games to play.

Eve Valkyrie: This seems like something I want to play but the demo cuts off right when you start getting the hang of things and due to the 60 dollar price tag this is a pass for me right now. Sorry but I'm not paying 60 dollars for any VR game unless I'm guaranteed more than 10 hours of gameplay and even then, it would have to be pretty awesome.

Here They Lie: Not a huge fan of the fact that the headtracking basically replaces the right stick on the controller (though I don't know if you can change that) but I think I could learn to get over it to play the full game as the demo seemed kinda cool. I can dig some weird crazy horror psychedelic shit when its in VR. This is at the top of my list for future purchases as it seems like it will be a visual tour de force in VR.

Rez Infinite: I never played this back in the day but like Here They Lie this seems like a game that's made for VR. The 30 dollar price tag isn't that bad but I was mostly going for a bunch of 20 dollar games when I first got the headset but Rez is at the top of the list for future purchases as well.

RIGS: The game seems really fucking cool but the demo ends right when you are getting into it. You can play it multiple times but its kind of a pain to do so back to back. I would most definitely pick this up if it weren't for the 50 dollar price tag.

Battlezone: Plays well and seems really cool, but like Eve Valkyrie I'm not paying 60 bucks for a VR title. Will keep an eye on this for a price drop.

Job Simulator: Seems totally up my alley where its just a stupid game made with every random dumb thing a player might try to do in a VR environment in mind but the demo was so short that I couldn't really gauge how much I actually wanted to play this sooner rather than later. This is on my to buy list as well though as a cool jokey game is a nice change of pace.

So far I'm happy with the slow trickle of new PSVR games every week as well. Unless you are just going hard on PSVR every day, there should be enough games to play and fuck around with for a while and I plan on spreading out my enjoyment of this device over the coming months as I still like playing regular games and just supplementing in VR games here and there when I'm in the mood.

This tech is already super compelling, at least to me, so the only thing that will kill VR or PSVR will be lack of support in the long run. Personally I'd be ok with one or two new VR experiences a month. I don't want to spend all my time in VR and that's ok. However, even this week I'm probably going to forgo buying Dishonored 2 in favor of Eagle Flight and Robinson: The Journey for PSVR because I'd rather have some really top tier VR experiences over a traditional triple A game.

My only complaints are that the motion controls are just okay. It doesn't hold a candle to the VIVE in that regard.

Also one big 1080p display instead of 2 1080p displays per eye leaves a lot to be desired in the visual department.

That being said the price is far more reasonable. Some of the exclusive software like Rush of Blood is extremely well produced. Also it is by far the most comfortable headset on the market right now.

For the next iteration I'd love it if they tripled the resolution and introduced better motion controls. Also if you could alter the focus on the each lens that would be handy. Other than that no complaints.

Top 3 games on the system for me right now are Rush Of Blood, Battlezone, and Rez. Though a fair warning on Battlezone and all of the multiplayer games. There aren't that many people who own the VR tech yet. So until Christmas hits expect to spend a little time in the lobbies.

The PS4 Pro has not enhanced the PSVR to my liking. However I do appreciate the effort.

The 1080p screen shared between 2 eyes is a huge flaw. The mediocre sometimes jittery motion controls i can deal with. That is fine. But when anything 25 feet infront of me that isn't flat shaded looks like a garble of aliased pixels. That is a problem.

PSVR is an excellent entry level VR setup. Even if you pair it with the PS4 Pro for $800. That alone is the price of a VIVE by itself. Which you would need a $1,700 PC in order to run moderately well. Along with a ton of work space because they want to push a 360 degree experience on a device wired to your head.

So cost and logic wise the PSVR is the best one in my opinion. I just want a higher resolution screen. Their PS Camera solution makes way more sense. 180 degree of body movement for standing games is more logical. At least until they can come up with an apparatus that doesn't require cables or excessive space.

PSVR will win out simply because your average person can use it. Oculus and VIVE cost too much. VIVE requires too much living space and 360 degree body rotation makes no sense when you're tethered to a cable wearing a bulky headset. Sony took a modest approach to VR and it paid off.

That damn screen resolution though. I would have paid $200 for a PSVR Pro with a 4k screen to share between both eyes.

Digital Foundry was kind of cold on how much the Pro enhanced a lot of the VR games but I've heard from other people that it makes a noticeable difference even if it isn't huge. Though to be honest I'm trying NOT to hear anything about the Pro being beneficial because I'm a total sucker that will buy any and all new hardware and since I don't have a 4K tv or display I'm telling myself I don't need any of that stuff though I fear I may break down and get one or both after the new year.

I bought Robinson: The Journey for PSVR when it came out. There was some confusion and last minute changes to the price were made which was a bit odd as I think its going to 60 now but I bought it day one at Gamestop for 40. Not sure why it changed.

Anyway, its definitely one of the more impressive VR titles as far as graphics. I still haven't gotten to far into it though because after playing for about 45 minutes it starting giving me a bit of a headache though I don't know if that's because of the game itself or the fact that I was feeling pretty tired that day but this is the first time I've ever felt uncomfortable playing a VR game so far. I did change the controls to full FPS control which I think I still should be able to handle, but I think I can see how some people might get sick playing a game like this in VR now. Still want to get back to it to see if I feel this way again so I can't really give a verdict yet.

I bought Eagle Flight as well and so far its been the only thing I've regretted buying for the PSVR. Early reviews made it sounds kind of cool and the MP aspect is actually pretty fun if you can find a full game, but I'm pretty disappointed with it overall as I thought the sensation of flying would be a bit more realistic but instead it just feels like I'm this floating eagle mask/head that's just zipping around. I get more of a sensation of flight from the space sim type games. When you add in the fact that you're using your head to turn and move all around it kinds strains the neck after a while. I'd say this game is a pass.

That free Call of Duty Jackyl VR space flight demo thing is pretty fucking rad though its super short and a huge cock tease. Honestly all it made me do was want to go buy Eve Valkyrie which I plan on doing at some point.

Eve is the most well put together VR game next to Rush of Blood in my opinion. Well balanced MP. Takes awhile to unlock new ships and such. But I like working to unlock new stuff so the microtransactions aren't a bother. Still the fact it's a $60 game and they have no campaign mode is a bummer. I would have really enjoyed a campaign mode in a VR game. Most of these are just minigames or very expensive multiplayer games. I'll have to give Journey a shot. Really want combat with a story. But beggars can't be choosers when it comes to early adoption of new tech.

Most excited for Resident Evil. Since it takes place in an enclosed environment. The blurry distant view problem won't be as big of an issue. Which is my major complaint about all VR out currently.

Not sure if it's an issue of having the screens next to your eyes. Or if bumping each screen up to 4k would solve the problem. But the blurriness makes the idea of looking across a huge expansive plane unappealing. If it's not up close and personal or very simple it kinda reminds me of playing X-Box 360 games on a NTSC TV.

On the plus side they've already cracked the PSVR so it works on PC. So if you are looking for a cheap entry into VR on PC and don't want to take the cellphone route. PSVR might do the trick. Not sure if that'd have a positive or negative impact on VR. But looking at future releases it looks like Sony is putting the most money into retail level exclusives. So it might be preferable in the long run just for access to a wider catalogue of games.

Can't emulate the motion controls on PC yet. But that is the worst part of the PSVR so that is no huge loss. Pretty sure you can buy the Oculus controllers by their own. Which I hear are much better but also far more expensive.
