MOVIES AND TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
07/25/16 at 05:59:02

I could have sworn there was a movie/tv thread on Brawl that was about as old as the temp site but for whatever reason I can't find it so if I overlooked it, fuck it, fuck you, and I'm starting the new one.

I don't think that many people will necessarily agree with me here, but Hardcore Henry is one of the most fun and awesome movies I've seen in years. It's a complete celebration of everything that is and ever was great about big dumb action movies, cartoons, and video games of the late 80's and early 90's brought to life by a group of people who have undeniably spent the last 10-15 years or so playing consoles FPS games. Hardcore Henry is a movie based on video games that were based on the best action movies of the last 30 years so its a weird full circle jerk in that regard but it is a love letter to a very specific demographic that has to at least appreciate the intent if nothing else. Its not a "good" movie in the traditional sense of the medium; ie an hour and a half to two and half hours of passive entertainment versus the 3 to 20 hours you get from a typical FPS game, but because of the unnatural, wild west approach to story telling and cinematography that comes with the first person perspective, alongside my love of FPS games, I found it to be super fascinating and compelling in a way that almost all movies aren't to me these days.

I'll admit that I was a bit "buzzed" when I watched this movie but I did view it fully twice in a row and started it a third time before finally falling asleep which is noteworthy if only because I rarely watch movies these days much less watch one back to back to back if I do even view a film a second time at all. I assume there will be some people that can't watch it due to the perspective or FOV making them sick, but to me HH combined with the short films I've seen in VR, make me think there is a whole other level of cinematic story telling available that's untapped an possible. Sure, this particular type of story telling is probably done better in video games, just like some story telling is better done through film or television, but I totally appreciate people making a movie as video game lovers first and foremost instead of the other way around.

However, all the stupid ludo-narrative dissonance and baggage that one must often overlook in video games is almost exemplified to a heightened degree here. But if you are like me and don't mind media occasionally being lesser than or backseating loose narrative threads in favor of agency or entertainment taking the reins then its easy to overlook the short comings of Hardcore Henry as a traditional film and instead appreciate it as an "experience". The most jarring aspect of the movie, for me, was the need to cut and splice footage together. If you are a seasoned FPS gamer you are probably used to a consistent uninterrupted "flow" in camera movement where there are never any leaps in time or placement, but with a movie the need to have constant narrative momentum meant that most scenes felt like they were being rushed and or cut short or oddly edited together because it would be almost impossible to film a movie of this sort where huge swaths of it require the pin point execution of actors and stunt men and women to fucking be on point.

It's easy to get caught up in analyzing this film and its pros and cons when comparing it to almost a century of cinema, but the bottom line is that this movie kicks ass and it doesn't take itself too seriously in all the best possible ways. It embraces everything that is big, dumb and great about over the top action movies and video games. I won't spoil anything, but one of the last scenes in the movie is an undeniable fucking love letter to anyone who ever held out on the hospital roof top in Left 4 Dead waiting for the chopper. And while this might not be the best movie to analyze someone's acting chops, Sharlto Copley--whose performance in District 9 is still amazing, to me, to this day--may have topped himself in Hardcore Henry as he plays multiple "respawned" characters throughout the film and it's honestly THE BEST part of this movie outside of the action.

If you liked DOOM this year, you'll love Hardcore Henry. It's my favorite movie this year by far.

Also saw Batman vs Superman. Honestly, wasn't as bad as everyone made it out to be. There are some problems with it, sure, but I liked it overall. Gotta say that Batfleck was perhaps the best on screen Bruce/Batman to date....? I appreciate the traditional "no killing" Batman as a character, but part of me fucking loved the older "NO FUCKS GIVEN" Batman on display here.

----TV----

I've only seen the first two episodes, but Stranger Things on Netflix is such an unexpected surprise love letter to the 80's in every conceivable way. I knew nothing about this show until seeing it pop up this week, but even the brief preview they show when you scroll by it was enough to tell me exactly what type of feel this show was going for and so far it nails it.

Also Game of Thrones is the greatest tv show of all time and perhaps the greatest thing that's ever happened to the human race and if you aren't watching GoT then you are a lesser human being. Season 6 raped face.

I think it's okay to start a new one though.

Just finished watching the Romance of the Three Kingdoms anime, loved it but this is essentially something you have to be into source material ahead of time to like I'd think.

It follows the novel completely too, which was nice. On the other hand, I am not big on anime. There are some exceptions but I will never go out of my way to watch it.

Other than that I'll be watching The Walking Dead again in a few months. Gonna set my expectations low so I'm not disappointed.

EDIT: I forgot I had seen Alien, Aliens and Escape from New York back in May/June and enjoyed them all. Felt I needed to see the Alien movies especially since how much Mosh and Roadie talked about them on Skype lol.  Shocked

And Escape from New York has the same formula as Escape from LA but it's quite a bit better.

I saw hardcore henry a month ago and right before watching it I had a little concern weather this could give me a headache because although that part in Doom is one of my favorite scenes of all time, along with the movie, I Thought if this wasn't done right it could be disastrous, but it wasn't. It was done right! That one chasing scene towards the beginning started to hurt a little but they cut that crap out and really did the whole movie right. A+.

Game of Thrones is great as usual. I just wish they would do more. More to everything. Who cares if it stretches 14 seasons. Probably the actors.

Wish I had Netflix. Wish I had internet at home for that matter. Preferably landline so I can play multiplayers again.

I saw Escape from New York not long ago myself. I like his pimped out mac 11 submachine gun thing. I was looking for a scene with it but couldn't find one. Instead I found this

This seems to be a discussion thread so I'll try to keep the clips to a minimum.

"Just finished watching the Romance of the Three Kingdoms anime, loved it but this is essentially something you have to be into source material ahead of time to like I'd think."

I need to look into this as I'm not familiar with the anime, but I am familiar with the subject matter as someone who has played video games like Dynasty Warriors and used to adore Japanese movies and culture and really loved Eastern media and its hyper indulgent glorified take on the history of the three kingdoms and how that has influenced a lot of asian culture to this day. The only other reference I have to the Three Kingdoms in cinema terms is the international version of Red Cliff part 1 and 2 from 2008-2009. If you haven't seen these movies they are great and perhaps the last time I thoroughly enjoyed over the top eastern kung-fu type movies.

"Other than that I'll be watching The Walking Dead again in a few months. Gonna set my expectations low so I'm not disappointed."

Better idea: stop watching this horrible train wreck of a show and instead watch better things on Netflix and HBO. I gave up on The Walking Dead a season or two back and it feels great. Wish I could love the show but its been slowly getting raped by the exploitation of the network that knows you'll watch it no matter what.

"I forgot I had seen Alien, Aliens and Escape from New York back in May/June and enjoyed them all. Felt I needed to see the Alien movies especially since how much Mosh and Roadie talked about them on Skype lol."

Wait, you never saw these movies? Holy shit. Aliens is the reason for so much of the entertainment you've consumed in both movies, tv, and video game throughout your life and without understanding that touchstone I feel like one simply doesn't understand why anything modern is entertaining at all. I can trace back almost everything I love about action movies and video games to Aliens, Predator, and Terminator 2.

"Game of Thrones is great as usual. I just wish they would do more. More to everything. Who cares if it stretches 14 seasons. Probably the actors."

Sure, more of everything is great but that's where the books are great. As a tv show its exactly what it needs to be even though some stuff does get left on the cutting room floor sometimes. When you really consider how much is put into a tv show of this type, its unmatched. You don't get this sort of care, dedication, story telling, and special effects from your average tv show so, if anything, GoT essentially ruins all television forever for me, at least in terms of the subject matter and presentation.

I have seen Red Cliffs before I think back in 2010 and it was great. My memory of the actual movie is a bit dim, I should look into watching it again since it has been years.

I still mostly like TWD but yes, it has its flaws but I am too involved in it to not want to give up lol.

And yeah, I always liked The Thing and movies with that style so you would think I have seen Alien. I realized I did not. But after seeing it, I can pinpoint all those references to the series that other shows have done.
"So that's what that was parodying..." lol.

I wasn't aware there was an anime on the Three Kingdoms. Sounds like something be interested in. I love the movies and other materials focused on the warring States period in ancient CHINA and CHINESE culture. The romanticism and way the stories are often told invoke a lot of emotion from me.

On the flip side I also enjoy japanese kung fu movies and the like. The idea of the samurai is one of the more interesting warriors to me.

Anyway on the side of TV shows the only one I've been watching as of late is a Netflix original called bloodlines which focuses on a rich florda family, who are a big name in town.

Basically as the show goes on you find out more and more about these people and the fact the perfect family isn't so perfect. It's a very slow burn, but in this case I prefer it. Each episode is only a hour long, but there is a lot of story to tell.

I bought Hardcore Henry the other day at a flea market. Sort of sloppily watched it one night, but I'll have to give it another go. It seemed impressive though from a production standpoint. One long action segment. Reminded me, in that context, of Fury Road.

I've been watching, on the complete other end of the spectrum, Squidbillies, for the first time. I bought season one with some leftover trade credit and am genuinely enjoying myself despite being self-aware it should be awful. It's pretty widely considered one of the worst Adult Swim cartoons, but fuck it, I think it's pretty funny.
