Just how "dead" is twisted metal? (In your opinion

The message is in the title.

Personally, I'm leaning more towards it being totally fan driven, given the lack of enthusiasm for the series from anybody "official", and by the revitalization of TMBO.

(This is my first time posting a poll, so sorry if I make any mistakes.)

How dead? Lets be honest, its in a coma right now.

Welcome to the funny farm SWAMPFOOT9000 though its not as crazy here as it used to be.

There is big potential for vehicle combat, but like any other game there has to be enough talent, risk, resources, and passion to make it happen.

Without any of these variables you can make as many 'Twisted Metal' games you want, the franchise will not evolve like other franchises do today.

Until something better comes I'll stick with TMBO.

Dead enough that there will be no PS4 TM title.

The fans clearly care more about it than Sony does at this point. Even when TMX was new, there was no marketing for it whatsoever, and Sony showed zero interest in letting people know that the game existed. Flash-forward 4+ years and the only thing they've done for the franchise since is shove Sweet Tooth-related bonus content wherever they can, pushing the character while neglecting his home series.

I'm not counting out the possibility of TM on PS4, but I guarantee that Sony isn't giving much thought to it right now, let alone as much as the fans have been.

It's absolutely true the fans care the most.

The fans helped make the series what it is. I still own an old magazine from right before Twisted Metal Black came out that had an article mentioning TMAlliance/the fans, and their importance. TMA was originally an anti-989 petition site, unhappy with the direction TM took after the brilliant, well-received TM2 World Tour, and the fans then were able to get the series back through voicing themselves.
Yet somehow leading up to TMX the remnants of the original TM team stopped listening to the fans, and it didn't lead to success.

Sure, it is true Sony did not market the game much at all, but we can not blame Sony/Sony Santa Monica for the lack of success TM 2012 had
-The game did get some hype pre-release. There were promos and a commercial, and a general excitement for Twisted Metal's return. There were doubters too, of course, since the game did not have a beta when it clearly should've.

Then comes the demo for TMX, released about a week or so before the game. The demo was up for a few days before being taken down because the demo/the server was so damn glitchy and broken - and Sony could see the project was already doomed but it was too late to delay the game's release (but taking the demo down was a good business move on their part). The game comes out, it's broken as fuck, people can't get online, and people who can are complaining about the extreme game imbalances. Despite that, a lot of people did buy the game at the beginning. Some people at TMA who hated the game still got 2 copies (regrettably). Sony knows the hardcore fans of Twisted Metal is what led to its longevity as a series - and they probably knew they weren't going to bank much on a broken and divisive TM game, but they did try. They (Sony Pictures) announced a Twisted Metal movie when TM 2012 was released - they figured it could help with the sales of TMX, which is logical, it makes people think the series is alive and well again. When TMX failed to make a positive impact, the movie was silently cancelled, which probably cost Sony a shit load of money.
Sony continued to support TMX despite all that though (while EatSleepPlay abandoned it very quickly). Sony SM could have had the server shut down a long time ago and never bother with server maintenance... and they could have excluded it from the ps4 PS Now service. They could have not bothered even having SweetTooth available for other games... SweetTooth in Rocket League or PS All Stars is a positive thing, because then he's in a popular game... it creates a positive association for non-TM fans. If you think about it - who really cemented SweetTooth as a 'mascot' character? Jaffe? or was it really Sony? Being a 'Sony mascot' had its advantages for the character. TMX was a HUGE failure, but SweetTooth is still popular, even the TMX portrayal, and I don't think that'd be the case without the characters clout, a lot which came through how the character was marketed.

If I recall correctly, the demo came out two weeks before release, and I believe it ran its full course being available for a week, then disabled a week prior to launch as stated it would be in Sony's blog. But yeah, the terrible servers right off the bat did the game no favours.

Oh it's dead all right.

I personally think Sony was marketing it extremely well. I heard lots of gamers around me who hadn't bought a Twisted Metal title in years talking about it and excited to try it out. I thought the trailers were exciting, the full E3 spread was grandiose, and the "Shoot my Truck" was fun.

However, Sony isn't stupid.  They are a business first and foremost.  First impressions are the most important, and unfortunately for Twisted Metal right out of the gate the network issues were completely overpowering.  Further, whatever they were they apparently weren't all that patchable because the conditions only BARELY improved.

You can't keep dumping advertising into that, and as a series that was dormant for so long, to have its debut first impression disappoint old and new fans alike . . .

Yeah, it's dead.   Sad

Edit:

Numbers don't lie.  The game's first week sales were about $260,000 which excludes any digital sales. That shows public excitement and awareness (which requires marketing).  The sales drop like a rock afterwards as people apparently play it and go, "Wow, this isn't worth it."

Where's the frickin' modify button?

I had to edit this because I said it was $260,000 the first week.  That's pathetic.  It was 260,000 copies.

That's what it should have said.
