Petition for TMBO (Playstation 4 Network)
06/18/16 at 00:05:09

I appreciate the new server for TMBO, however I think its time we started a petition for TMBO for the PS4.

They did it for TMB, why not for TMBO.

I'm sure it would drum up new TM fans, make money extra money for Sony (with little effort), and increase the prospects for a new TM.

If TMB for ps4 was a success for Sony they might just put TMBO on the PlayStation Network anyway, but a little encouragement can't hurt I'm guessing.

If someone started a PS4 Community that was a Petition for TMBO - maybe that could work.

Sony for whatever reason has expressed no interest, which is a bit disrespectful to the TM community considering its a first generation PS online game.

Giving fans TMB on PS4 with not very many trophies & laggy shareplay multiplayer isn't enough. It's not even among the more popular PS2 on PS4 titles. Even TMBs brother War of the Monsters seems to be more popular.
I do however think TMBO on PS4 would be much more successful and would bring back a lot of players.
I don't think Sony sees it that way though. They would think that TMB offline would sell better than TMBO based on it was TMB making them money in the past, whereas TMBO was never officially sold by itself. They don't realize the potential, and a petition with 100 something signatures may not mean anything to them. They don't even see the series as all that viable anymore, only the character of Sweet Tooth.

I like the idea, but I don't think we have the numbers. Something like Socom has a better chance than TMBO does.

Also, we're past E3 2016 and nothing TM related (new game wise) has been announced... does this mean you'll now join us on the TMBO server Thumpy?

Glad you asked DARKFORCE, I have been discussing the matter with a few new hardcore players (who have played TMPS3) over the last several days.
I will be sending them copies of TMBO over the next couple of months and if the game meets their standards they will be joining us sometime in the fall.
Some of my old clan members will be coming back as well, (all of them hopefully).

So it looks like 'Devastation Inc' will be making a comeback around Sept with around 5-7 players.

And I agree with everything you said Mosh (Mort's friend I assume), its a shame TMB did not do well on PS4. TMBO on PS4 looks dim but I would not rule it out, maybe Sony is just milking it, I would not be surprised.

As for E3, like I have said over the last three years that E3 2017 is going to the year a new TM will be announced and if not I will not expect another for a very long time if ever.

Looking on the bright side we will always have our TMBO  Smiley

I actually think Sony has been very happy with TMB over the years.  I don't think they ever planned to release it on PS3 as one of their classic titles because everyone always blabbed about TM2 instead, but then someone started to worry about TM:2012 and clearly thought it'd be a good idea to package the weaker 2012 with a TMB conversion to boost the feel that you were getting a lot o game.

Well, once they did that it took a while but they released it for sale and it apparently did well enough to make it one of their FIRST choices for a PS4 conversion for this generation.  I think that speaks volumes about where they stand.  We can complain that it's laggy, but that is the limitations of the technology they're using for all games like this.

I'm happy that War of the Monsters seems to be getting a resurgence in interest over the years.  It never really had it's day in the sun back in 2002/2003 and yet it seems to have thrived as monster fans have learned about it over the years.  Games like War appeal to a broader base than the hard pounding TMB.  That's one reason that I think it's been a mistake to keep the TM franchise in the M category over and over again.  Multiplayer games do better most of the time the more people who can join in.

TMBO is another story.  Old online games rarely get brought back because new players, and even old players, are much more nitpicks about the technology changes that come.  TMBO came about before their was any cheat protection (which takes money to fix), it has none of the flashier server options of today (instead an old scroll option), it has a hidden chat feature (money to fix), and no actual vocal chat (you could use party chat but you couldn't talk to opponents - money to fix), and finally, the net code itself while remarkably sturdy playable (seriously, I give them props for how playable it is), it unfortunately makes it look like people who are REALLY good at the game are cheating, even though they're not. There's not way to fix that without redoing the whole dang thing, and then you'd probably have to dumb the gameplay down and alienate the hardcore fans who are most likely to support it.

I agree TMB being packed with TMX was probably over concern for TMX's quality, so that bundle made it seem worth the full price of a game.
It was odd for Sony to wait so long to release the PS3 version of TMB though - and there was somehow a problem with unlocking SweetTooth in War of the Monsters on PS3 because WotM couldn't identify the TMB ps3 save file. I am much happier with PS4 TMB (than the PS3 version) but the lack of TMBO gives the game so much less replay-ability that it ought to have. I figure the primary reason is money, for the server and the fixes it'll need, but I think players would be likelier to spend more on TMBO than what they paid for TMB ps4. 10 dollars for TMB ps4 is fair but not a great deal if you've already played through the game. 15 (max 20) dollars for TMBO ps4 is a bargain if it were HD, had trophies, and a better server. I do however see absolutely no problem with leaving in the Chat Code tbh. PSN already offers text & voice chat, so even if a lot of players don't know the chat code, they could still communicate through PSN's features.
And I don't know about gameplay tuning for noobs - I don't think Sony would care, anyone can practice enough to get good, dumbing down gameplay doesn't dumb down the vets. Sony didn't seem to mind allowing TMX to launch with all its unbalanced gameplay problems either, and that was a full priced game. I don't see what Sony would gain by alienating hardcore TM fans either. That's something Capcom gets away with financially because they can live off past clout, but it would backfire if done with TM. Without the hardcore fans, TM would not have gone anywhere as a series. TM releases within the past decade or so (TMB for ps4/ps3, TMX, Head On: Extra twisted edition, TM1/2 on ps3)... pretty much all of them were released out an obligation to the fans. I am sure Sony is proud of Twisted Metal, but I do not think they understand the fans or truly care for them outside of their money. They know the hardcore fans exist and will buy re-releases and incomplete TM games (TM Lost, TM2012), but when they are asked about the future of Twisted Metal, they respond with silence.

I am actually interested to see where things go with these new Crash Bandicoot remasters.

Will they be completely new games based on the classics with new code or will they simply be reskinned versions using the original code?

I would absolutely love to play a reskinned TM2 but with 8 player online...

Just a thought.

What Archminion said. A PS4 remaster of TM2 would be brilliant. Could you imagine if it had online play, too? Part of TM2's charm is that it is still dark, but also colorful and comical, making it appeal to a bit of a wider audience rather than being simply more violent and edgy, not to mention it has a lot of characters and stories. A remaster might be a good way to bring in new players and experience what Twisted Metal's golden days were like back on the PS1, just brought it and tuned up for a new generation.

That said, I would love to have a release on TMBO on the Store. I'd buy it and play a lot of it. I had a blast on TMX's multiplayer, so I'm sure TMBO would be a great experience.

The code for TM2 World Tour was lost so that likely isn't happening (apparently D. Jaffe has thought about this idea before, or so I've been told).
I do think it'd be better to port the PC version of TM2 for PS4, that way we would actually get a real Online mode, but knowing Sony we'd get TM2 remastered with no online at all except SharePlay for 2 player co-op or 1vs1 sessions.
I'd still probably buy it, but if the online is going to be limited, might as well give us a collection remaster that includes TM1 & (whatever).

And I agree TM is better as a Dark-Comedy/Action than it is a Horror/Action story but they may still have about the same mass appeal.
While the M rating may have hurt TMB back in the day (when video game violence was constantly being politicized) I really do not see how the M rating hurt TM 2012s sales at all.
The Dark Comedy of the original Twisted Metal is something that really helped the series gain cult status. People love the "Be Careful What You Wish For" trope and love Calypso as a "Jackass Genie". This is what gets missed in TMB - because those tales are revenge stories and Calypso actually seems more like a "Benevolent Genie" that only screwed contestants over if they made a bad wish (Agent Stone), were his enemies (John Doe, Black), or if Calypso had an agenda (Charlie's Kane son, who Calypso wanted as a successor).
Then in TMX, instead of being more comical with the approach, they literally make Calypso The Devil, and contestants have zero chance of surviving if they win.
There should really be more of a balance in the future - not every character needs to be a Horror character.

But yeah, a TM2 (& 1) remaster with a new code, re-skinned could be a good idea, just to remind playstation gamers of the golden age of TM, then maybe it could revive interest in the series again.

I think it hurts TM's sale and status tremendously to be a horror/gore fest game.

The thing that marketers/business peeps/game designers/hell everyone forgets is that violence is not equal accross the board.  Even an M rated game like "Call of Duty" will feel like a COMPLETELY different game than an M rated game like Twisted Metal.

I know countless parents who will buy their 9 year old kid Call of Duty (I don't think they should, but they do), but WOULD NOT EVEN CONSIDER TM 2012 with its severed heads and constant "fucks" dropped all over the place. Call it a double standard or whatever, but one simply feels more hardcore than another.  We can claim it's done in a comedic sense, but that dark humor is completely lost on a nine year old.

I had at least ten friends who had fond memories of TM:2 and playing it wth their families who simply refused to buy TMB or TM:2012 precisely because they didn't see any point in buying a multiplayer game they couldn't play with the rest of the family.  I'm a perfect example too.  Even though I love TMB I have yet to play it with my kids.

Now contrast that with TM2.  It was edgy but it certainly wasn't dark.  Even then it walked a line, but most of the time people never experienced that side of it (cut scenes).  I have CLEAR memories of playing it with cousins, aunts, uncles, and everyone watching the game play out and think it was fun.  That gets word of mouth going, excitement going, that sells MORE copies.  How many of you had experiences like that with TMB or TM:2012?  I bet you're hearing crickets right now.

Finally, people assume that because some M rated games really blow up (Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty) that those are the most popular games, but that's a very limited scope.  The success of the mobile market casual games (Plants vs. Zombies, Angry Birds, etc.) proves that the games that actually have the largest mass appeal are much more accessible games.  The console audience is actually a very narrow slice of the pie and it's arguable the powers that be have been making decisions that limit its size.  People who like fun/lighthearted games can't turn to consoles anymore unless they want to buy indie projects (which is probably why the indie world is doing so well on consoles right now, it's a break of fresh air from all of the doom and gloom games).

End of speech.

I just now got a PS3, so I'm not entirely up for this yet. Although, if there would be a TMBO for PS3, that would be GREAT! I would be glad to do online play WIRELESS!

The PS2 emulator on the PS4 seems to have the network adapter disabled. This could strictly be for technical issues since we all know how the dev9 plugin on PCSX2 has issues. So that's why I think Sony has decided to remove the network function all together, and no online PS2 games on the PS4 (TMBO, SOCOM 2).

If you guys have also been following the PS3 hack scene, the PS2 Classic Manager hack for the PS3 also has the network function disabled on online games like Socom 2. This hack basically encrypts any PS2 ISO to the format used on the PSN PS2 classics. Useful for PS3 slim and later revision models that don't have backwards compatibility.
