Is Head On any good?

Only one I'm really familiar w/ is TM2.

Was Head-On any good given that it's a direct sequel to part 2? How does it fair to Black other than the obvious darker tone?

Head-On is actually a good game in the series, even though it's not as loved as the other games. Still, I think it's even appropriate for KIDS to play (the PSP version anyway). But when it comes to the PS2 version, kids will have to wait until they're a little older, because of the scary content found in Twisted Metal: Lost (another game on the same disc, the remains of Twisted Metal: Black's cancelled sequel).

But anyway, I still suggest Head-On. Just play it like a REAL gamer would, without complaining about the defects. Wink

What are the defects exactly in comparison to Black & 2?

Oh yes, Head-On is pretty good. It's actually one of my favorite TMs. In fact, I think my top 3 favorites would have to be:
1. TM Black
2. TM PS3
3. TM Head-On Extra Twisted Edition

So anyway, if you have a PS2, by all means try out Head-On "Extra Twisted Edition!" It has a lot of neat bonus content and it's a fun game. The bonus content is cool because you have "Sweet Tour" which allows you to run around on foot as Needles Kane outside of his Sweet Tooth truck and explore as well as pick up neat little factoids.

You also get a few levels from the cancelled Twisted Metal: Harbor City, and in fact the Sweet Tour's on-foot sections were going to be a part of Harbor City. And lastly, you also get the unused video endings for the first Twisted Metal for PS1, as well as a neat featurette with the Twisted team talking about the game series and how it's changed over the years.

The only real "defects" I can think of is that (1, Head-On is honestly too easy compared to the other games. If you want it to be a little more challenging, set it to Hard difficulty and avoid grabbing any vehicle upgrades that defeated enemies drop. And (2, the game has a few technical bugs since it's a port of a game originally made for the PSP. For example, the character "Cousin Eddie" is meant to speak at one point, but instead you just get silence.

So it's mainly little things like that, but if you can get past those, you've got yourself a solid Twisted Metal game. Smiley

Okay, which one has the best single player experience? Black or Head on? I dont have friends really to do a split-screen session. Sadly. Miss those days.

Black is better in single-player mode.

Thanks. I'm going to pass on Head-On (for now @ least) and purchase Black. Both go for super cheap used on Amazon.

Also, since I'm a bit new to the Twisted Metal universe—Is the original Twisted Metal any worse or better than it's sequel, Twisted Metal 2? TM1 goes for just tad more than TM2 on amazon even without manual/ case. I understand TM2 is hailed as the pioneer in the franchise, but what was so wrong w/ TM1 over 2? I watched in a interview where David Jaffe insisted more heart was poured into TM1 indicating that it was more fundamental, while TM2 really is just practical in that it improves on the technical game-play side of things. In which case, is TM1 worth checking out for someone new to the series? On the internet, I always hear praise for TM2/Black. So I figured just to look into those two. Something about part 1 seems appealing though.

All I know is to stay away from 3&4.

Twisted Metal is okay, and Jaffe actually said he kind of had to rush it because of time constraints, and it was his final chance to really get somewhere with Sony and whatnot IIRC.

It's the only game you get to play as Pit Viper in, so if you ever wondered what she was like, go for it.

It's relatively lacking in a lot of things like advanced attacks, some portions of the controls aren't as fluid as TM2 and post-TM2 games, it overall feels more like a tech demo to me, and an important stepping stone for what a godly and amazing franchise the Twisted Metal would become later on, of course, ignoring "TM3" and "TM4."

Okay, so really 2 and Black are the peaking points of Twisted Metal franchise—the ones that seem to matter most to die-hard fans.

Indeed. Also, if you happen to have a PS3 or PS4, you could actually get Black off of the PlayStation Store.

I only have a FAT PS2. I considered purchasing a used PS3 to play Twisted Metal 2012 and the Black HD update, but figured it was pointless to invest in one for the sole purpose of one or two games. However, I once owned a PS3. PSone and PS2 are better IMO.

Plus, I heard the PS3 port of Black is not online capable—only the 2012 reboot provides that feature. Or I could be mistaking that for the PS4 port? If there is one.  Huh

Twisted Metal Black: Online is a separate deal, either get a copy of it off the internet, or get Free MCBoot, and the stuff required to install it onto a flash drive and run it off there.

What's Free MCBoot? A modded memory card? does my PS2 have to be modded?

Your PlayStation 2 does not require any hardware modifications, it just requires you to use certain software that installs Free MCBoot to a memory card of your choice. There should be a plenty of information around, but if you want I can put you in the SaveMGO Skype group and some people could probably help you with it.

SaveMGO being originally for the original Metal Gear Online included in Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, in which they made a revival server that requires homebrew or PCSX2 typically to play on.

I tried to get TM: Black Online to work on PCSX2 last night following various guides from TMA and others. No luck. Trial and error.

Easier going online w/ TM2 (PC) IMO. I found it on some abandonware site. PC version is super expensive used on Amazon. Very few copies of the port were made. Still, not sure if it justifies me downloading it.
