Work

Just a post to talk and vent about work related shit. We all have jobs. At least I hope we do. I'd like to hear what you guys do and what you think about jobs in general.

I'm doing pretty well on YouTube. Enough to keep gas in my car and pay the utilities. Combined with the freelance voice gigs I've been getting. I could cover all of my bills and have enough leftover for a few luxury items here and there. But I can't imagine dropping my "real" job and taking a gamble on this lasting for all my life.

I've seen a lot of people who used to be popular having to resort to panhandling online to their fans. Because ad revenue went down, viewership died off, or they just cant make weekly content anymore. One small change to how YouTube promotes videos, how they pay out, or what is popular to watch, then next thing you know you're begging people to donate just to keep the internet on.

I'm glad i'll probably never need to do that since I still have my other revenue sources. The whole online thing is just something I've always done for fun that turned profitable over the years.

Don't get me wrong I love doing this stuff. Absolute dream job. I'd love to just do this 7 days a week. But I can't imagine quitting solid work and gambling it all on being an entertainer. I'd have to be making at least a quarter of a million a year to even consider that.

It blows my mind seeing online entertainers pulling in about $100,000 a year just go nuts buying BMW's on credit. New homes. All that shit they can't even really afford even with their newfound wealth. Thinking the pay is always going to be that high. As if it couldn't possibly go down. They're completely unaware they are hanging on by a thread, even with their current admittedly impressive revenue.

Granted lots of jobs that aren't online entertainment are like that. Animators and artists for games and cartoons get thrown out like used condoms after almost every project. Or they wind up like Incognito or Westwood where a big company scoops them up and dumps them out. You can get a shitty contract as a truck driver or construction worker that seems secure but they dump you on your ass out of nowhere, and you could never afford to sue em. Cause if you did no one would hire you again.

But there is a lot to be said for being a manager at a big retail chain. Or a solid job at a warehouse moving crates and shit. Or simply running an already successful business. The chances of a minor change destroying your job are minimal. Plus you can always go get another job in the same field. Or sell of your business and work for someone. Your experience and record means something.

If you fail as an entertainer or YouTube just decides to tweak things in a way that aren't in your favor. You're pretty much fucked. "played minecraft for millions of people over 5 years" isn't going to do you much favors in a resume.

I've talked to a few people doing that route and they aren't even paying into Social Security. So when they do get old and arthritis makes it impossible for them to play Rocket League or DOTA. They're going to need to attempt to apply for disability. Even if they successfully apply for it. They can kiss their internet connection and brand new gaming systems goodbye. Cause they didn't pay in and disability for people who don't pay in is about as good as welfare.

Not to mention keeping a common job kinda keeps you real. I'd think half a decade of just being an introvert playing games or being an entertainer would cut you off from the real world experiences that give people that insight that makes em funny or relatable.

Though the real weird shit are the kids who are making millions. That'd never happen in my day. There are 14 year old bloggers/gamers raking in millions of views and making more money than their parents combined. I can't help but to think that might fuck them up more than a child actor in the long run. Especially if mom and dad end up leeching off them.

Teacher suspends you? Fuck you teach! I'm Billynoscope420xXFAZExX! I'm quitting school to make a living on YouTube!

It'll be interesting to see how these people turn out in 10 or 20 years. You know the successful ones that lose touch with society and the common person.

The unsuccessful ones will just fall from grace and wind up having to be a normal person again. Which honestly is probably a good thing on a psychological level. The successful ones who wind up choosing to make a living at home behind the computer screen starting at the age of 12. They're going to be a bit fucked in the head.

Still I totally get why they do it. I'd probably do the same if this was my first job. I'd think "Oh it'll never change. The audience loves me! YouTube would never fail me!". Even though most of them are obnoxious egomaniacal cunts. I still feel sorry for them.

Though I probably only feel empathy for them because I'm also an egomaniacal cunt.

I wouldn't quit a perfectly fine established job unless I knew for fact I would never need it again. There's a lot of people that get high and mighty because they worked their way up to manager, but as soon as the leave that job they're back to being shit again like everyone else.

Just from YT? That's impressive. Just don't crank out crap. Unless you're under contract and have to. As for my channel it's just me archiving videos for myself and sharing with others. I figured that out within the first month or 2 on YT. Although every once in awhile one of my videos will take off and get 10-20,000 hits. I try to see why and they are usual lengthy, informative videos, with great gameplay. There's no way for my channel to be profitable but I'm trying out different things and throwing random stuff up every now and then. I wish I could do drawing and animation on pc because I have a lot of ideas for comedy short skits. I started writing them down awhile ago but still don't write down half my ideas. I use to be an artist in real life but that faded after high school. I can't draw shit with a mouse.

To put in a little on the spot improv and spin on it to make it flawed yet charming. Or in some rare instances turn the whole thing around and make it good. Don't be afraid to work on something you don't think is a masterpiece.

As far as YouTube earnings go. It keeps the utilities on and car running. But if something happened like a flat tire. Or some kind of costly medical procedure. I would probably wind up in a debt spiral if this was my only income source. Even if I lived within my means. I wouldn't be generating enough cash to have legitimate savings. At least not yet. I've been pulling in around 100 to 300 subscribers a day as of late.

As far as making money on YouTube. You absolutely have to upload weekly at the very least. Bi weekly is more ideal. However daily is what the people who seriously make a living off the system do. The more you upload the more the YouTube algorithm favors you. Since you'll serve way more ads thanks to a massive increase in repeat business.

Quality is important. But really what you want to aim for is what I'd call a "fun quantity". As one person you can only make so much, and YouTube doesn't favor people who only upload the really good stuff. So you need to treat it casually and have fun with it. Kinda like how when hanging out with friends not all of your jokes are going to be hilarious. But you and your friends still have fun every time you hangout. YouTube works a lot like that. If you don't hang out with your subscribers by giving them content. They forget you exist.

Another thing that I've found really helps is following the trends in content production. I'm about 2 years late to this streaming business. But even then I'm getting great numbers off it and the added benefit of user interaction encourages tips and donations. Which are a very nice boost to the monthly income generated there. It also helps out a lot with fan loyalty when you interact with them live. It makes you more of a real person to them.

But I would say the most important thing of all is that you need to work with other people. Find people who do stuff similar to what you do. People who might make good use of your own talents. Get your name out there and pay it forward by promoting others. The more people know you exist. The more easily they can find and enjoy your content.

There are people out there who could be huge and beloved. But because they aren't networking and getting their name out there. Doing work for other channels and such. They might never be discovered by hordes of people who would love their content.

So basically don't be afraid to work on shit, don't be a stranger, and work with others as much as you can. Doing that will increase your chances of success as an online entertainer significantly.

If you box yourself up on your own channel and just hope people will find you. You severely limit your chances of success. Even if a video goes viral it's not going to count nearly as much as getting in touch with a fanbase that likes you and not just that one video.

Damn, that's the real deal right there. Nicely put.

Goddamnit I'm in a debt spiral right now. It's really not my fault. The only thing I ever did wrong was trust the wrong people. And I never have any savings so this usually takes months for me to recover from.

Actually it's in there.

In all serious thought there's not much to say about my job. I just do it. I'm good at it. I don't love it.

There's too many females in the work place so a lot of drama and rumors go around. Part of the reason I'm being promoted.

Much like you I enjoy creative work, but sometimes that avenue  completely drains me and leaves me brain dead. I need to get a decent set up going and a mic so I can start commentating my videos and make them much more interesting to watch, but at this time it's a little more than I can handle and is also why my channel has been neglected for a good amount of time.

For a while I was using my phone to upload videos when I didn't have internet. So I always had a way to keep up with it.

Damn, that's the real deal right there. Nicely put.

Goddamnit I'm in a debt spiral right now. It's really not my fault. The only thing I ever did wrong was trust the wrong people. And I never have any savings so this usually takes months for me to recover from.

As much as I hate to say it. You just can't help everyone. I learned that doing charity work and giving money to the homeless. It's really hard to see someone you know needs your money or time and tell them no. But you matter too. Don't let people lead you into a debt spiral with guilt. Put that money into savings whenever you can.

Even worse is to get involved with friends who need money or need you to spend money. It's fun to go out and have drinks with friends. But if that is the only way they'll hang out with you. If you have to go out and spend money. It's best to just keep yourself out there and find friends that are more on your level of living.

Besides if they are real friends. Not giving them money or hanging out in places that require money won't be an issue.

Of course there will always be people out there that are just looking to exploit. Sometimes you just gotta get burnt by those people so you can learn to recognize that behavior when it's going to happen.

Always be careful of anyone who says you are being greedy or stingy. Those are the people who will gladly take you for all you're worth and leave you in a debt spiral.

Haha too many women in the workplace will cause that. It's funny how they'll be at each others throats one day as if they are mortal enemies. Then some power shift happens that requires them to work together to rip someone else down and they have amazing teamwork. Congratulations on your promotion!

I get the mundane shit too. I had some fun retail stories but there wasn't much to that job. Just get the game, put it in the box, ring it up, take the money. Nothing difficult or exciting. Couple of fun stories here and there but it's really hard to find an exciting job that isn't dangerous or pays shit.

I totally understand not wanting to invest in equipment. Though I will say these days $20 headsets actually sound pretty good. I've seen successful people who record all of their audio right off their cellphones. But at the end of the day you gotta work with the tools you are most comfortable with. So good luck on reaching that point. I really love having a creative outlet and working with others who also enjoy it.

I'd have gone even more insane without a creative outlet. I feel a lot better about the years wasted knowing I helped some other people get through their 9 to 5 by having something fun to watch and listen to. I have fun producing it, their lives are a little less boring or shitty having enjoyed it, and I get a little bit of extra coin.

Everything else I've done and currently do has some kind of catch. Either it's a dead end that only pays off if I live long enough to cash in on social security. Or I'm selling alcohol to people who are legally allowed to have it but probably would be better without it.

I'd really love to be an entertainer for a living. But the only way that'll work is if I pull in say $250,000 in a row and can start socking away $100,000 a year. In that case I could make the dive and feel comfortable knowing that if it all fell to shit. I'd have a couple of years to figure shit out.

Until then. The boring and morally questionable work is the only reasonable option.

I did end up buying a mic today and a guy I asked about making up a logo for me got back to me.

I'm thoroughly impressed. These few small things are getting me excited about it again.

It's so easy these days. All you gotta do is reach out and you'll get all sorts of support and deals.

That is how I got the DD gig. Since then I've met dozens of cool people. Including people who worked on animation for Fox and Adult Swim. Outside of a lack of free time. There is no reason why people who are interested in trying shouldn't make some entertainment.

Nailed the test for my promotion. I'm officially a shift lead now. Pay raise and free food makes me happy. Haha.

On the side note, I started working on things for my primary youtube channel, along with a website and forum.

I'll reveal more on that later.

I have an issue with current business. I would do much better owning my own store.

I believe in respecting your employees and if a customer is rude, not like the usual just a bit upset, but cussing and calling your employees names, calling them stupid bitches and everything else, they need to leave and I WILL tell them to leave.

I got told if I keep doing that I'll get fired. The business wants that extra 5 dollars and that's 5 dollars we lost.

When you work at a store that's pulling more than 5,000 in on a weekend? That 5 dollars is just a drop in the bucket. But the good workers that are going to quit for being treated so poorly and feeling devalued, you can't replace that.
