So today, my copy of Rogue Trip Vacation 2012 had arrived in the mail today.
As soon as I started playing it, I felt instantly home as the controls have a TM2/TMB feel to it, especially jump being L1+R1, the same as TMB.
I started playing the game as Biohazard, but lost all of my lives fighting Nightshade at Neon Nightmare.
The game is fun but difficult, as its my first time playing.
Also is it possible that I can run through each level and kill every enemy in a Twisted Metal fashion without getting the tourist photo ops ?
Are tourist mandatory ?
There is a deathmatch mode without tourists but from what I remember it automatically picks the # number of vehicles you can battle so it lacks custom settings.
You don't technically need to get the tourists in the story but it's necessary for Health/weapon upgrades, and because you have a limited # of lives in story. The game itself isn't really hard at all from a combat perspective, but story mode is totally unforgiving. To top that off, there is only one ending for all the characters, leaving little motivation to complete the tournament. I think the boss fights were a bit frustrating though, I agree. Nightshade was tough, and Big Daddy is a very difficult final battle, to the point where you may not even bother.
The game was pretty entertaining despite some flaws though. I particularly thought the maps were pretty good. Really enjoyed the XLAX Airport (Mighty Mighty Bosstones!), Area 51, Eternal Acres. The characters/vehicles were pretty cool too... a friggin hot dog car, a rat-themed Batmobile, a school bus.
Being that Rogue Trip was Scott Campbell's project, some of Rogue Trip's ideas were carried over to TMX.
Meat Wagon from TMX is Ozone. The name "Vermin" is re-used for a different vehicle. There is a playable helicopter in RT like in TMX. The remote guided rat rocket from TMX is based off a remote guided missile from RT. Homing weapons home too well in RT - just like TMX. Each game has several maps that take place in California and each have one New York map. Lastly, Rogue Trip takes place in 2012, same year TMX was released.
Also, if you haven't played Singletrac's "Critical Depth" for PSX, you should order that. It's a submarine version of Twisted Metal that came out around the same time as Rogue Trip. It's a bit more complex but has more of a story.
