COOL TM related info/news post
04/03/15 at 16:16:49

I'm starting this post so we can add any unusual or interesting stories from around the web which might in some way involve or refer to the Twisted Metal series.

I've just seen this:

https://makezine.com/2015/04/02/jurrassic-park-twisted-metal-waffles-common-powe
r-wheels-racing/

Please add your own stories and news. It doesn't have to be info about a new release just general stuff which might in some way throw out a nod to TM Smiley

Cheers!

This isn't a "proper" news story... But it's interesting, Twisted Metal-related and coincidentally ties into the April fool's thread.

Remember how the vast majority of PS2 games didn't support widescreen aspect ratios? A few years ago, a couple of communities sprung up on the PCSX2 and PSX-Scene forums that set their sights towards creating widescreen hacks for PS2 games.

Think of these as cheat device codes that modify countless games to run in widescreen. Each version of every game needs to be hacked individually. Some games have better widescreen hacks than others. For example, at minimum every widescreen hack makes 3D objects widescreen. But the lion's share of hacks don't deal with 2D objects, resulting in HUDs and text often looking "fat" in widescreen. The quality of each hack depends on how the games were originally programmed and the skillset of the hacker.

Since PCSX2 is a PS2 emulator for PC and all of this started on its forums... modern versions of the emulator itself now have built-in widescreen settings and are bundled with ZIP archives containing widescreen hacks for hundreds (if not thousands) of games. Devina, a member of its forum's community, maintains the main widescreen archive with all the latest, most up-to-date hacks.

So... what does this have to do with Twisted Metal? Well it just so happens that another member of those communities (No.47), created widescreen hacks for the NTSC-U version of Twisted Metal: Black. I subsequently drastically enhanced and ported them to almost every known version of the game Smiley. I've also released similar hacks for War of the Monsters and Downhill Domination (latter's are still rough). My eventual goal is to create near-perfect widescreen hacks for all of Incognito/ESP's PS2 games.

Running these kinds of games in PCSX2 at super high resolutions alongside widescreen hacks is the closest we'll ever get to playing HD remakes of Incognito's PS2-era games. The hacks also work on real PS2 consoles.

Do yourself a favor and download Rocket League while it's free.  I won't tell you how to unlock him but it's relatively easy, good luck.

Yet another Sweet Tooth promotion.

Do you sense a TMPS4 coming towards us?

I do!

Its kind of moving towards us like this.

There will be a TM PS4.  It's inevitable.

I just hope they give it to a rockstar team like Sony Santa Monica or something.

Scold, I think Sony needs to give the project a lot more support than it did with TMPS3, and hopefully Scott Campbell and his team will be a part of it.

It would be supportive if Sony finds some good talented design techs and pay them well enough to stay on until the project is finished.

I'm guessing we won't hear anything about the next TM until a few months after the release of David Jaffe's 'Drawn to Death' out of respect and the fact that both games will be somewhat similar.

If they do make a new TM, spam mails and comments saying no flying. Jaffe add a character that flies in Drawn to Death. I wonder if flying is overpowered in that game too.

Luis, I'm wondering about that too, guess we'll just have to wait and see.
And your right, balance is an important factor in a game and should be present (flying vehicles or not).

Flying vehicles also promotes variation, another important factor in a game.

I certainly hope a new TM is in the works, and I definitely consider all of the recent promos to be an indicator. I can't see it being worth the effort to cross a character from an inactive IP as merely a bullet point to drive sales. Especially for a title like Rocket League that's available free for most, I think Sweet Tooth's presence has a greater purpose, being to keep the series relevant for something larger in the future. That's my hope, at least. It's wishful thinking, but at least it's decently logical.

However, I wouldn't want to see Santa Monica Studios as the dev, or even involved at all to be honest. Nothing against them since they're certainly a talented group, but I would really prefer to see a dedicated studio work on the project. I believe SMS's involvement in other projects was a factor in 2012's lack of polish, and how poorly they supported the game following launch, as Eat Sleep Play's contract was fulfilled by then. Seeing that Sony's first-party devs likely wouldn't be suited for developing a new TM, the most likely scenario would be contracting an external studio to develop it, like was the case with Eat Sleep Play. This could be good if that studio's contract extends past release, seeing that TM is a competitive multiplayer game that really needs post-release support. Just as another Rocket League reference, it's awesome how well Psyonix has done supporting and promoting its game, with that being its sole project. It had early hiccups at launch because of the massive number of players initially playing, but Psyonix was on top of the issues and resolved them quickly, as opposed to TM 2012 where most things weren't really resolved until a couple months later and the servers were under less strain. TM as a series has every component to potentially to be a massively competitive game if balanced, supported and promoted properly, and I want it to be developed by a studio that can elevate it to a larger stage.

I wouldn't say flying was ever overpowered, disregarding the homing mega gun era. Flying with Sweet Bot is practically just a defensive pussy tactic; it's annoying, but not game breaking. The thing about Talon is that playing it takes such a high level of situational awareness that really none of modern-day Talon scrubs have. In my opinion, there's only one player who ever mastered Talon and made the vehicle appear questionably overpowered, being LuisoAssassin. He was the type of player you struggled to even get a remote bomb lock on since he was so conscious about staying out of others reticles, even when they were purposefully targeting him, and knew how to fly at the proper angles to dodge anything that was avoidable. Talon functions really similar to Reaper, in that it's extremely easy to use against clueless players, but extremely difficult to use against competent players, but was balanced by the fact that it had virtually limitless potential when mastered. And as the majority of Reaper scrubs rely on freezes or RPG antics, most Talons can only use pussy tactics, and don't understand how to offensively counter when someone competent targets them.

With that said, that doesn't mean that flying vehicles had any purpose being in a vehicle combat game. Twisted Metal is fundamentally designed to play on a horizontal axis, so the existence of two vehicles that can travel on a vertical axis messes with the pressure balance. In team games you need a player to constantly target a Talon, because a Talon's usefulness greatly diminishes when being harassed. The thing is, it's not fun to play Talon when being harassed, and it's not even fun to be a Talon hunter really, because aside from the need to mostly rely on auto-aim weapons (which I believe is a major reason why overpowered homing is such an issue in this title), the depth that exists in land-based vehicle teamplay is stripped as well. Therefore, we don't use Talon or Sweet Bot competitively, since it's simply not fun. In ranked TDM where scrubs can freely use Talon, I'll take my turn targeting a Talon to ensure the match is enjoyable for the rest of the lobby, but in FFA, it presents even more of an issue, since it's in nobody's interest to target a competent Talon because in DM, it hardly returns decent points for the time and inventory you may invest in targeting them. That means in DM, either, Talon is unable to accomplish much because of being pressured by someone competent, or by virtue of how newbstreaks work, it entirely dominates the match with nobody bothering to pressure it. There's not much competitive middle-ground.

You think Sony Santa Monica is to blame for TM:2012?  Good hell man.  They're only one of the most respected game studios there is, and no one, and including ESP or Jaffe, ever claimed they were anything but awesome.

Making up stuff is so fun though.

By the way, it would actually make perfect sense for a business with a dead IP to use Sweetooth in all of these things.  From a business standpoint, if you don't believe a full game is viable, or even a partial game, it's better to use the copyright for SOMETHING fun rather than let it languish.

You see moves like that in the video game world all the time.  I actually think this is a bad sign of TM's state, not a good one.

Fingers crossed.

Yeah, they're a respected studio and they're a great group. Never criticized them in that regard, and I even made a mention of that fact myself. I just don't think they are the best choice for sustaining, let alone creating a new TM, largely based on the number of projects they are constantly involved in. ESP's maintenance contract with Sony expired at the end of May 2012, and at that point it was up to SMS to maintain the servers and balance the game. They did diddly-squat. The most they accomplished in terms of balance was correcting only the extremely glaring issues. They couldn't even be bothered to tell us half the things they tweaked when the updates rolled out, as we would discover other adjustments they didn't mention. They tweaked things nobody was even asking for and ignored things others were on their hands and knees begging for. A number of their tweaks hurt the balance of the game, and they later reverted them back after receiving mostly negative feedback for those adjustments.

To me, they already demonstrated they have no clue how to properly balance and maintain a vehicle combat game, and although they had a massive pool of advice from veteran players offering lists of what needed adjustment, I believe their involvement in other projects trickled down to their lack of time to take into consideration what issues needed attention, and which didn't. Other games they've collaborated with have had issues as well. PS All-Stars was promised a patch slated for mid-2013, but was delayed all the way until April 2014. Starhawk has its share of issues too. So, it's not like TM has been the single time they dropped the ball. But then again, it might not be financially feasible to have an external developer come on board, develop the game, and stick with it long enough to be properly balanced. So, SMS's collaborative effort would likely be required if a new TM ever comes around, but in a perfect world, I'd prefer to see them keep their hands off the project and see the primary developer stick with it through the extended maintenance period.

And I don't think that Sony business model is concerned with whether they "use the copyright for something fun". They renewed the copyright to maintain full rights, so others couldn't obtain it. Is PaRappa the Rapper going to make an appearance in the next God of War just because Sony owns the IP (don't even know if they still do, just an example)? I'm not saying that the recent promos invoke any certainty, but it's at least novel enough to start speculating. I'm sorry you believe that a perfectly balanced vehicle combat game won't exist, but I'm an optimist, and would like to see another TM and give it another shot. Smiley
