TM1+2 HD: The Good; The Bad, and The Ugly

So I've been playing Twisted Metal 2 lately on my free time and it really just strengthens my yearning for an HD reissue of some kind. The game is just way to simple and addictive to the point that I think it could easily out do any modern indie games on the market. I feel like Sony coud put the resources together to come up with some Twisted Metal "classic" HD concoction.

In all practicality I think it is more than possible to pull off. I bet Sony has all of the codes and textures on some yellowed floppy disc in some smelly filing cabinet waiting to be taken out. I think that if Wolfenstein and Doom can be ported and polished to the modern day so can Sony's flag ship series.

In my grand scheme in my head I could see an HD remake consisting of both TM 1+2 vehicles with all of the levels. I think a tournament mode could be made with levels from both games, but I think the game itself should be based off of TM 2's engine. So in essence it would be a TM 2 XL. I think some sort of online could be crafted as well as some sort of texture creator though I'd just be happy with new high quality textures.

All in all do you think the idea of making this is too far fetched? Would it be too costly to make this compared to the profits they'd make? In all honesty how hard is it to work with 15 year old code when they most likely have everything they need tucked away somewhere? Wasn't it just difficult for us because of the lack of any source code or software to decifer the files?

There has to be changes first. Darkside's special is useless. Make the little laser be able to freeze cars, like in the PC version. Put L1 and R1 for jump like in TMB. Why Mr. Slam doesn't always slam three times? I wouldn't mind a TM2 remake with online. There's no one hit kills that gives the middle finger to health bars and armor.

I've been tooling around with recreating the first two games in UDK..at the moment I am stuck on editting lesser detailed levels such as the Warehouse District from the first game and keeping them true to the original. I will post pictures in the next couple of days of my progress.

Right now it's just level design as I am not keen on programming..if anyone is interested in working on this send me an inbox. I have ripped all of the games textures and sounds for this project and have gone as far as getting material from other SingleTrac projects as well including Warhawk and Critical Depth, Jet Moto, etc. The idea I have is to create an open world with these games battleground fused together.

Yeah Darkside's special is utterly useless, but his ramming coupled with the clipping issues made him one powerful vehicle.

I think that an R1+L1 jump feature would be great too.

I also think that there should be some weapon pick ups added to a few levels, or have them spawn a lot faster. Moscow suffered a lot from an overall lack of weapons and health.

I think a more likely possibility could be a hi-res download collection including TM1 and 2?

There wouldn't need to be to much work involved and no packaging costs.

Nice safe option for Sony that still lets the fans know that the series still exists and Sony still support it?

Here's some stuff I've been working on to show you guys I was serious..It's pretty shabby so I am anticipating some negative feedback, but it's a work in progress. This map creation is a lot more detailed and tedious than I could ever imagine. I've been trying to get all the sizes relatively accurate from the original games so it's been time consuming. Here you will see a level in progress melding Arena, Warehouse District, River Park Rumble, both games Rooftop levels, and even a Rogue Trip level I am working on (San Fran). Check it out and tell me what you think. I'll have better stuff later.

This is an overview of the map and how I've laid out a few of the battlegrounds.

Arena in progress.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/bencrocker/3.png

Rooftops. I had textures applied but removed them before I had to overhaul a bunch of stuff. This will probably end up overhauled again because of certain size ratio issues I've run into..but if you know TM1 and 2 you can see how I've melded the two levels together.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/bencrocker/4.png

The most complete section so far, my recreation of the Warehouse District level.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/bencrocker/2.png

Some more unfinished stuff in the distance, I laid out most of Cyburbia on the right and there is some pieces of River Park Rumble and a connecting Cyburbia tunnel on the left.

I think that's seriously awesome. Seems like quite an undertaking.

It's a shame they didn't really do this.

Thanks! It honestly looked better before when I had more textures laid down, but I actually had to redo a lot of the stuff I had already finished because it wasn't accurate to the original game. This means going in and counting textures piece by piece and trying to size them correctly in the Unreal Dev Kit. Pretty tedious, but I feel like in time it will be complete. The only thing that sucks is that the further I were to get in this project it would likely get shut down by the Sony big wigs. Oh well, labor of love.

If anyone can contribute vehicles similar to the original game I would love to work with you on something. I have no idea how to program either, but I suppose that would be further down the road. Right now I'm just trying to figure a way of combining the games in a reasonable manner. Looking to rip some Twisted Metal: Black textures maybe even to replace the ones I have. It gets very limited when you only have so many places to draw from but I'm actually thinking the shitty retro look of it might end up being appealing.

I questioned being true to the original texture layouts and trying improvise some things. The original Warehouse District is very ugly, but I like having the layout and connecting it to Arena so I was conflicted. What do you guys think?

I'm not sure if they can come into your private residence and shut you down. As much as copyright holders would like to. I think we're still protected from them doing that. It's when you distribute copies and make an available download that you will eventually get nabbed, but inside your home you should be able to do as much as you want and have your friends come over and play.

If nothing else at least you had fun making it. I'm the same way. The best part of projects is the creation and development process and final product. Sometimes people think I'm trying to impress them. Not at all. The best part is already over by the time I put it on display.

Unfortunately, I think almost all of the tm 1 specials would need to be overhauled since most are the same, I think Darkside could be given her ram special from black and it would work fine. As for the others, Crimson Fury already has a special from head on and giving Yellow Jacket his molotov back and making it work like the roadkill special from TM3 would be good. Also it may be worthwhile to make pit viper' s special poison or slow down enemy cars plus home in like brimstone.

I also think it could be considered letting a newcomer or two in who are deserving, Junkyard Dog is the name that comes to mind for me. Please for the love of sweet tooth however, I just want them to give us all of the great classic cars we grew up with in one game like Spectre, Twister, Hammerhead, Yellow Jacket, Thumper and Mr. Slam, not forgettable junk like vermin and meat wagon and kamikaze who just stole the specials of the classics. Actually of the newcomers in tmx the only ones I liked were Juggernaut and Road Boat, and even those guys were kind of knock offs themselves. If a new tm of any kind arrives, I just want it done right so they put the favorites in first and not as scrapped Dlc- I will not rest until I see Hammerhead Mr. Slam and Darkside in the same game!!! Oh, and I'd like to see also the option to turn off the falling ice in Antarctica as I'm sure it is just a line of code that needs to be tweaked somewhere, plus opening all of New York in mp. Maybe put in London from TM3 and a level from Black like Rooftops as retro shout outs too?

I would love a hi res TM2, but the pc version looks a lot crisper already than the ps1 game. That plus the fact it supports 8 player online means we are already quite fortunate I think. I am hoping for an announcement of some kind during the 20th anniversary next year. Until then we have some great games like TMBO and TM2PC to keep us diehards satisfied Wink

That special sucked. It kept missing unless the enemy is right in my face.

Twisted Metal Small Brawl has Darkside, Mr. Slam and Hammerhead in the same game. In the PS2 version of Head On, you can play with Darkside in the Head On stages with an action replay code: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIAXcIgSaCM

Dollface is not in TM1 and 2. Darkside is a man.

I would like to note that I hate Dollface, and I think Mr. Ash is such a more interesting character. On top of that, why go through the trouble of adding characters? I mean besides making Dark Tooth playable, and maybe TM 2 Darkside, I don't see a point in making low poly versions of new characters.

Also a TM 1+2 HD release would probably require little to no tweeking. The same characters from 1 and 2 could just switch textures/models. The TM 1 characters would just need some minor stat adjustments, and the TM1 levels would just need weapon pick-ups placed.

Like I've said before, the whole thing would probably just use TM 2 as a base. I feel like people over complicate such a simple HD conversion procedure. I feel that Sony can do this with minimal effort, and a solid payout.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news when it comes to Sony, I'm positive they have no interest in Twisted Metal. If they can make money through mediocrity, then why would they put the extra effort to try and make money from something that's actually good? Just saying, Microsoft is no better, Nintendo is letting us down here and there. I say US, the FANS, with the help of David Jaffe, should be responsible for the remakes. I'm sure they're not as defensive as KONAMI.

One time some fans, with Hideo Kojima's approval, the creator of the Metal Gear franchise, wanted to make a remake of the first Metal Gear game for the MSX2 computer, however when KONAMI got light of it, they told them to cease & desist.

IF we just so happen to be lucky, Sony won't care, and Jaffe would really tell us what we'd need to know. To have a fully functional, basic Twisted Metal game with basic elements from the SingleTrac era should be enough, then release HD addition packs after. I say, try and clone, before you try and make something superior. TM2PC is awesome on it's own, but it's net play features are kind of weak, it has compatibility issues on modern day Windows OS (Native Linux API without Wine anybody? ^^; ) and not to mention as we ALL want, hell I've been fighting to find a way, to be able to play as Dark Tooth.
