For a typical new player, the first time they'd create an account and login to the server, they'd realize that they're showing up as "Player" everywhere.

Amazing. This is one distinct detail I remember from the short time I played tmbo 10 years ago. I put a screen name in but I always showed as just 'player'. A lot of people had the name 'player' come to think of it.

To counter this, a few players began tracing the IP addresses of other players they connected to while in-game.

TMBO uses a P2P network setup, where all players in a given game room maintain direct connections to one-another simultaneously. Via SNMP (to log the IP addresses of newly-established connections) and some persistence, it was possible to gather up IP addresses overtime, and eventually tie them to the usernames of players that would join into game rooms. That method worked fairly well, but was quite a pain to leverage (lots of manual effort).

At some point, DarkForce came up with a setup that allowed him to trace the game's packets. That method was pretty effective, because other players' PS2s would consistently send out packets containing their screen names to all other connected PS2s...

Fascinating

You guys really sound like you know what your doing. Best of luck. Fingers crossed

Contributions are not needed, but thankyou Smiley

The server is coming along fine, slowing down lately as we have busy schedules, but on a whole we have come so far so fast.

One feature that IS implemented, is that any version of the game can be used.

A European playing on a PAL PS2/3 with a PAL TMBO can connect to our server, and play with a North American using a NTSC PS2/3 with a NTSC TMBO disc... no modding required. They both connect to the same server and are compatable!

This means even less barriers than ever before. Years ago some people used gamesharks to switch servers, but that is not needed here.

Awesome!

Also curious about your server.  When it does get created, what are you going to use to run it, and will it support many players, or be limited?  Honestly not expecting more than 50 players to be on at once unless word gets out like a forest fire, though.

Nothing fancy to run it, pretty much any Windows or Linux based PC.
I'd like the server to support 1000+ players simultaneously, but we won't know till we do some testing.

Just that picture alone brings joy.

@DARKFORCE, it seems like running a server would require a powerful PC.  I guess I could be wrong.

To my understanding you really don't. Which is the good part Smiley The server merely helped connect people, and host lobby rooms so everyone can see them. Pretty sure in-game is all P2P. I think how good of internet would be more important. Fast DL/Upload speeds.

I actually had the game for months and haven't thought of using the Ethernet cable until now. What made me use the cable is fighting games online plays better with that cable. Then I remembered the PS2 has a port for that too.

I'm surprised how hard the bots is in this online version. They have perfect handling and will follow behind you a lot. Warthog is more annoying now, because his special has Minion's fireballs. It took me hours to try to do a no death run on the four stages that were unplayable in single player. The settings I put is first one to get five kills. Dogpound is the hardest of the four stages. Here's a video for people that never played this to see how the bots are: http://youtu.be/HrwGfpl8HAE
