[MOD] Play as Tower Tooth in Twisted Metal Head On
07/18/13 at 18:48:05

A simple mod with a lot of bugs quickly turned in to a lot more once I realized I had permanently modded the save in the same way I had intended to do the game.

http://www.mediafire.com/?cb4yobmcpib2ir8

Enclosed is a save file that will run on any vanilla US version of Twisted Metal Head On for the PSP. Once you go to story mode, you'll see a save for Tower Tooth at LA. I can't unfortunately save the game at Big Blue Stadium, but the video below should allow one to get the basic idea of this mod:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=CnUUIaPfZ3g

I started off by first modding the ISO, (I own the game, don't worry!) to copy Tower Tooth's files over Twister. This... had undesired results, as doing so for some reason makes him take on the host character's special ability, as you can see in the video below. HOWEVER, playing a story file from that ISO, (or any other mode for that matter) still causes the game to recognize that you're playing as TT, and thus, will load the REAL TT once you quit and go back to a vanilla game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=RTnrA09kbxg

On one final not guys, since I know very little of hex editing or creating NitePR/CoderPR/Action Replay codes, if anyone could decompile this save and find out what the game is doing to load TT, I might be able to make him fully playable in all the other game modes as well even in a vanilla game!

Enjoy everyone! Smiley

NOTE: upon completing story mode, the game will crash. Do not be alarmed, just reset your PSP. Simply put; it does this because Tower Tooth does not have an ending movie and the game doesn't know what to do next. Tongue

Welcome Vahkiti! You finally beat the anti-spam system. Don't expect much in the way of replies as this place is a ghost town habitated by spam bots at the moment. But don't worry, they won't bite. Hopefully that will change in the near future and 'real' people will return and see this topic.

Interesting find...

I've come up with a similar hack for the PS2 version of TMHO (TMHOETE) Smiley.

In TMHOETE, both TMHO and TML run on the same game engine, and both games' cars are completely interchangeable.

With the cheat device codes later in this post, you can "force select" any car for any player or bot. Furthermore, going through story mode with these cheats turned on won't cause any crashes (even upon beating story mode), and saving will even remember the "forced" player cars (including if TML cars are used in TMHO's story mode or vice versa).

As for these cheats' limitations, I'm only aware of one. If you force select a TMHO boss as a bot car, you can't go in-game unless you're solely playing against that one bot. So for example, in Challenge mode, you wouldn't be able to force select multiple Tower Tooths as your opponents, nor a combination of Tower Tooth and other bot cars.

Cheat Device Codes:

Notice...
The following cheats are raw (HEX) ones. To encrypt them for use with a specific cheat device, use a conversion app such as Omniconvert (http://www.herrvillain.com/omniconvert/). Also, PCSX2 and ps2rd (if using default settings) don't require mastercodes.

How to use...
For each code, replace XX with the HEX ID of your desired car. For example, to force select Tower Tooth as Player 1's car, use 202F4AC0 00000076. I've provided tables containing all of TMHO and TML's car IDs after the codes.

Mastercode (aka M, Must Be On, etc)

Does the TMHOETE code only works on an emulator? I'm asking because there are some TM codes that won't work on a console, like playing as Minion in TM1 in the rooftop stage.

The lion's share of my testing was done in PCSX2 (specifically R5330; btw TMHOETE has major shadow rendering issues in R5404 and up).

Having said that, I'm not confident in releasing codes without first testing them on real hardware as well Smiley. So prior to my other post, I tried out a TMHO challenge match in Big Blue Stadium, with Tower Tooth force selected for Player 1 and all bot cars forced to Crazy 8 (i.e. an impossible scenario in the standard game). Can't recall off the top of my head, but I believe I also tried the same mode/settings in one of TML's levels (either Suburban Terror or Carnival of Darkness) shortly afterwards. Both tests worked out fine Smiley.

I should note that I didn't try story mode nor any memory card saving tests on real hardware, but IMO it's highly unlikely that those scenarios would have any issues. But I could try some quick tests in those if you'd like.

Really great post btw- we need more like this that add something new to the forums.

Loving it that we can now pit all of the vehicles from HO and Lost against each other.

It does beg a question though: Since it was possible to do this with hacking devices you'd have thought that ESP would have just chucked all of the cars into their own exclusive 'Battle Royale' mode so you could have classic 'what if?' matches?

Seems like a lost op that wouldn't have taken much work... especially since the early unreleased TMB2 proto actually has vehicles from Black and HO selectable for the same enviros.

Really top stuff though.

Good to see Tower Tooth twisting metal in more than just Rome DM and HK as well Wink

What I wanna know is how do I get those codes to work in the Action Replay? It doesn't look like I can simply type those numbers in, when adding codes into the AR.

Throughout the PS2's lifecycle, all cheat device companies encrypted the codes for their respective products. So for example, CodeBreaker codes wouldn't work with Action Replays/GameSharks, etc. This was done by those companies to keep consumers tied to their respective cheat devices. I guess their logic was that whoever could release the best codes, in the greatest quantities, would get more consumers and not have to worry about competing companies' cheat devices being able to use "their" codes.

Anyways, the cheat codes themselves are generally the same for all cheat devices (with some exceptions - particularly with mastercodes). If you decrypt one cheat device's codes and re-encrypt them for a different cheat device, you should be good to go.

My boring explanations aside, the codes I posted earlier are unencrypted ones, so they won't work with GameSharks/Action Replays unless you encrypt the codes for those devices.

I'd recommend using Omniconvert (http://www.herrvillain.com/omniconvert/).

Here's a quick and dirty guide on how to use it:
  1. Set Input to Unencrypted - Standard
  2. Set Output to Action Replay - whatever version you're using
  3. Copy/paste the codes you want to use into the left text field
  4. Click the Convert button
  5. Encrypted codes will appear in the right text field (enter these into your cheat device)

If the codes still won't work for you then, it probably means that an alternate mastercode (aka (M) code) needs to be developed. In that event, I could look into developing one - but you'll need to mention specifically which version of Action Replay you're using (v1, v2, MAX, or MAX EVO). You won't need to retype any of the other codes.

Hope this helps Smiley.

The master code doesn't work and I noticed whenever I click on convert, the first line of the code changes. I'm using AR Max.

Edit: Nevermind, I finally got pass the master code part. I found out if one code doesn't work, clicking on convert can fix it. I'm using Tower Tooth now, thanks. Why do you have bot 8, when you can only fight five cars?

Glad to see it worked Smiley. I really didn't expect the type of mastercode I developed would work on any kind of Action Replay/GameShark device. Long ago I used to use a GameShark 2 and never had any luck with those types of mastercodes (ones starting with a 9 in unencrypted form). Wasn't sure if Datel/Interac had improved their mastercode support in subsequent versions of their cheat devices...

In TMHOETE, TMHO allows up to 5 bots per level, and TML supports up to 7 (quite a bit less than TMHC's 11...). But when I was developing the codes, I noticed what looked like an 8th bot car ID slot, and figured there'd be value in including it (came close to omitting it though). If a hack is developed one day to make it possible to force up to 8 bot cars, the ability to force-select the 8th car's ID could come in handy.

Fighting 8 enemies is what Head On was lacking. That's another code, that would make the game better.

You'll have to settle for 7 Tongue.

Select Up To 7 Opponents (Challenge)

On a side note, it's looking more and more likely that TMHOETE's game engine supports up to 8 bots. The above hack can be tweaked for 8 opponents, but has some issues... The game's UI fully supports an 8th car selection, and the 8th car ID will even get set by the game engine at the appropriate memory address. However, no more than 7 cars will be loaded in upon going in-game - even if an 8th car is selected. So there's probably another max bot car limit somewhere in the game engine that would need to be heightened to support 8 bots.

The codes are working, just to let you know. I made full run throughs with some of the TML cars. Is there a way to fight the CPU version of Tower Tooth in any stage? I wanted to fight both Dark Tooth and Tower Tooth in Big Blue Stadium, but then I remember the code gives you the weaker playable version, where his hitbox doesn't switch to the head on top.

Edited:
Just ignore this part Tongue. Turns out I really didn't have a good enough grasp of TMHOETE's advanced TMHO/TML controls to make this comparison. I still don't believe rear firing is possible in the TMHO portion of TMHOETE, though...

If you think TMHOETE's arbitrary car selection limitations are strange, it gets even weirder... Shocked

As far as gameplay mechanics go, TMHOETE's version of TMHO has been simplified somewhat compared to the PSP original. Also, despite the fact that TMHOETE's versions of TMHO and TML run on the same engine, various features have been arbitrarily locked out between them.

Here's a rundown of the availability of various features in the PSP and PS2 versions of TMHO/TML.

Game engine features: TMHO (PSP): TMHO (PS2): TML (PS2):
Cloaking: Yes Yes Yes
Freezing: Yes Yes No
Jumping: Yes Yes Yes
Mini mines: Yes Yes No
Rear firing: Yes No No
Shielding: Yes Yes No
Adjustable camera distance: No No Yes (Select + Dpad Up/Down)
Toggle 2 player split screen axis:
(i.e. toggle horizontal/vertical split screen)
N/A No Yes (Select + Dpad Left)

Just to further prove that it's the same engine, I was even able to figure out the basics of a hack that would allow the adjustable camera to be re-enabled to some degree in the TMHO portion of the game (based on how the camera states function in the TML portion).

Just to keep em coming, here's another interesting tidbit of info.

Transylvania wasn't a brand new level created from scratch for TMHOETE. It was originally planned to be in the PSP version of TMHO, but was likely scrapped in the rush to launch it in time for the PSP's North American release.

I found these references to Transylvania in the BOOT.BIN file of the PSP version of TMHO:
  • "Transylvania"
  • "CASTLE" (missing CASTLE/CASTLE.BDD file?)
  • "shell/lbcastle.tex" (missing loading bar texture file)

Remember Tower Tooth's battle music in the PSP version? A shortened version of the level's name was even mentioned in the file names of those tracks:
  • STRM/TRANSO.AT3 (Transylvania - Original)
  • STRM/TRANSR.AT3 (Transylvania - Remix)
