Quote:Blame whoever you like, but what killed the game was IT DID NOT RUN WELL.
Not even the best marketing in the world can sell a toaster that won't toast, a phone that won't call people, a car that won't start, or a game that won't run.
In defense of the game it's framerate is still higher then the Unreal 3 engine schlock. Also i have way less problems connecting then i originally did. For all intents and purposes it's working better then Gears of War 2 did. So it didn't have to run well to sell well. It's simply that the TM license doesn't hold as much weight and they can't just flip a DLC game into a full release and sell it for full price with no marketing and no intent on supporting it.
Also no matter how you look at it. Sony published the game and financed it. Even if they sold knowing it would preform badly to recoup losses. I don't buy the "i think it's programmed like shit so Sony is the victim" attitude. Because first off it's incorrect and secondly even in it's current form it's still not plagued with game breakers like no host migration, host advantage, or a 24fps cap.
In fact i think blaming ESP is downright moronic considering it started out as a DLC title by a company formed by guys tired of working on big scale games. Sony controls the TM franchise. They would be the ones to push to change the game to a full game.
Then again you'd have to play the game past the first couple of weeks to know the patches were effective. Though not enough. It's not the nightmare you paint it out to be Kilrahi.
Honestly i find TMX in it's current form to be preferable over how TMBO and TM2PC handles latency. At least i see the fucker lagging and they don't just cruise around invincible. TMBO on a professional level is practically 50% dealing with the netcode or abusing a special that doesn't follow the huge lag blanket put on everything to help keep the appearance of smooth gameplay.
In all honesty that is why i quit playing TMBO. The netcode smooths over lag so badly that lag is essentially part of the game. It's not even up to the standards of the time. Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament didn't have that issue. TM2PC was 75% done and finished off by a single programmer and it handles almost as well as TMBO does. The novelty of playing online on a console blinded people to that. But i can't blame them as it was the first online experience a lot of PS2 gamers had. So in their eyes that was modern. But it feels more like 56k gaming in 1995. Especially with no team modes.
It's almost like TMBO and TM2PC got rushed somehow. I don't know how though Sony is nothing but respectful to the franchise. It must have been Singletrac saying "Ahh it's 75% done just have someone else do it Boss i'm done with it." Then Sony couldn't do anything about it but pay them for more games.
