Arcade's contain some of the most rare games that everybody has seen or played at one point. Many of the great classics remain lost to mainstream and even hardcore gamers.

Thanks to strides in emulation as well as Youtube and other gaming websites many gems and oddities have been rediscovered. Some even manage to find ports on home consoles. But the super rare ones made by defunct or very small companies have died with the arcade industry.

Not all of the memorable extinct games are perfect. Most of them even have levels and areas designed to kill you specifically so that even the best players have to spend a minimum amount to play. But back then it wasn't about perfect runs or even finishing the entire game. It was a unique experience with multiple machines running not only different games, but different hardware as well. The sights and sounds of each machine were not only unique but also far beyond what we had at home even in the late 90's.

I'm just going to list one to start. I'm interested to see if anyone has played anything i've missed.

Zombie Raid - Sammy - This was the lightgun game that was hard for me to find. The only place that i knew which had one was the one at Six Flags. So every time i knew someone who was going i'd tag along mostly just to hit their arcade and try to beat this game.

It's a standard lightgun game but it had some very good action and animation. It also has a quirk in that you had to remember the order of 3 colored items in order to beat the last boss. If you fail to remember it and answer the final puzzle wrong you not only get a game over but you cannot continue if you fuck up at that point. Which drove me crazy to the point of remembering where the arcade was simply so i could come back and legitimately beat it.

I spent alot of my youth in an arcade. I practicly lived in 3 different ones where I lived when I was young. It was my personal escape from the real life that I was going through.

My ability to play a game for hours on one quarter was only because my family was on welfare, and my money had to go far. I loved the arcade. At the time, it was the only thing I was good/proud of.

It was a serious blessing when Atari and Nintendo came out. Then it became a matter of my mom having to kick me outside!

Here is some I loved. I'm not going to post obvious ones like Pac-Man, or Mario Bros.

I could play this litterally all day on one quarter in the sit down machine.

I could also play this one all day on one quarter as well. The highest I got was the 108th wave. I could've went farther if I didn't have to go home that day.

Me and my buddy always loved playing this, and thier sequils.

The alternative to Mortal Kombat....

This game will always hold a special place in my heart. I adored this game, and loved it's story.

This game was so badass. I smoked so much fucking weed but, I didn't give a shit. This game was awesome. I also glitched the shit out of it on the bridge level with the car. Noone ever beat my scores in this game.

When you think about it, I'm glad I was not born in the early years of arcades. Arcade means you have to keep going outside in order to play video games and need money to play them.

San Francisco Rush series. My favorite arcade racing game growing up, and is still my favorite to this day. They did port this to the PS1 and N64 because it was so popular, but the N64 got it best. The best one on the arcade version in my opinion was Rush 2049. It had a feature where you could create an account by putting an easy-to-remember-number in, like a phone number, and all your lifetime mileage you earn by driving at 200 mph (depending on your car's handling) can earn you additional cars and paintjobs, and save your progress for when you return. They had the standard version and the Tournament Edition, which had tracks and cars from the N64 port. You could choose to race 7 other CPUs, or you could enter Phantom Mode, and challenge 3 ghost cars of the 3 fastest players to become the track champion. This was my absolute favorite mode to play, because it was so challenging to try and beat the top time on The Rock (Alcatraz Prison). Here are some tips to help you when in Phantom Mode:

1. Use a Manual Transmission. The clutch will give you better acceleration and more air time when airborne when you hold it down. Besides, Automatic is for squares, like pants!

2. Experiment with different handling. Normal makes your car easy to steer, but top speed is 180mph. Advanced increases speed to 190+, and steering is more looser. Extreme propels you and your ride to 200, but handling is very hard. Extreme is best for this mode, provided that you have experience with it.

3. Discover the many shortcuts on each track. Try to use them to your advantage.

4. Try not to crash. With Extreme handling applied, even fishtailing could cost you the #1 fastest track time.

5. Drive fast!

*sigh* If only they made racing games as good as this. I remember I used to go to the local horsetrack and play a race for $0.50. You guys should check it out if you get the chance. Ah, classics.

Primal Rage was pretty dope back in the day but I think it came out around the same time that Killer Instinct did and KI was clearly the better fighter back then in my opinion. I played both but KI was my bread and butter. I used to rape hordes of faggots at KI in arcades back in the day.

Also, San Fransisco Rush was the shit on N64.

I was gonna say holy shit, I cant be that damn old where noone know WTF these are.

Unfortunately there wasn't an alturnative at the time, because console games did't exsist and when they did they were rediculously expensive.

120 for an Atari 2600 was alot of money back then. ::::rolls eyes::::

Aliens Vs Predator. (actually it's 3 player Final Fight with the characters swapped).

This was another one i couldn't find often. Even if i could find it it was typically a 2 player cabinet with the AVP game installed onto it. This came out right about the time the SNES had hit it's prime and game rentals were very popular. Arcades were beginning to suffer and many places wouldn't buy an Arcade that isn't a proven hit or something guaranteed to pull in quarters.

I love the art in this game. The alien designs were particularly good.

There is a SNES version and it's pretty good. But it's not a good substitute for the arcade. This game came out at the same time they were doing Terminator vs Robocop and they were trying to build up to a mega movie featuring all of these "adult" action characters.

AVP movies were supposed to happen shortly after this game thanks to the popularity of the comics in addition to the fact no one had made huge cash off the Alien or Predator franchises since Predator 2 and Aliens 3. But something fell apart and all that's really left of all that are a few comic books and the AVP arcade.

Also the deluxe Afterburner arcade with the rolling cockpit was fucking amazing. Anyone who didn't get to play that really missed out on one of the cooler arcades ever made.

I see these things once in awhile at expensive movie theatres and Chuck E Cheese. They typically have either an Innitial D racing game or F Zero AX. If you find one with F Zero AX on it fucking play that shit. That is basically the game they made this arcade for and it has some insane motion.

I used to love when I found that AvP game in an arcade. The one I used to go to finally got it after a while so I had a place to play it for a while before the got rid of it.

Our Chuck E Cheese has Initial D Third Stage, actually. I love the idea behind it, but since it's suspended in the air, they didn't bother to give it a manual transmission option, which kind of kills it for me, given the cockpit and all. Plus, the driving mechanics are horrid. If you fuck up, even slightly, your entire run is fucked.

It was very hard to find Primal Rage and Killer Instinct in town. You had to drive out to Orlando or Tampa to find those boxes, and since my mom was a broke ass at the time, we hardly went that far from home. I only got to play them was on my Genesis or my friend's Nintendo.. Don't remember if it was SNES or the N64. We were tight with the local ma and pa video store, so they'd let us check out games over the weekend for free, all we had to do was check them back in ourselves the following Monday.

My favorite arcade games were the basics.. The Simpsons, X-Men, TMNT, Mortal Kombat, etc. Our local dumpy-ass Wal-Mart had them out front in the lobby, and being the aforementioned broke-ass my mom was, I had to make fifty cents stretch. Finding a quarter that someone dropped under the machine was like finding gold lol.

I hate the Initial D game on that cockpit. FZero AX controls so much better and the movement of the cabnet works way better with FZeros gameplay. Since it's a fictional game with an emphasis on high speed and doing shit like racing on or inside cylinders. Plus the game just has better design in general.

Captain Commando's spritual succesor. This game has a very fair challenge but you could only truely enjoy it with 4 players. It's very fast for a 4 player beat em up and while i'm not a fan of the main characters the gameplay is so well done that it's hard to stop putting quarters into it.

Carneval is a spirtual sucessor to Area 51 in Midways line of Lightgun games. This came out a few years before the Dreamcast hit.

The setting while not totally original has excellent art and sound work. It doesn't take it's self too seriously but remains quite fucked up and with some creative enemy designs in both looks and in game behavior.

The enemy and shooting mechanics are very good for the time. It's not like Zombie Raid where the attacks are super predictable. The way the characters move around in the 3d prerendered world offers many opportunities for enemies to attack you in logical and hard to predict ways.

The boss fights are also very well done. Similar to the House of the Dead bosses. But more americanized with far more blood and american horror movie type enemies.

I really loved the pump action shotgun and the way it functioned. Shooting in the game had a great feel and while it's very rough around the edges. It was one of the most enjoyable lightgun games ever created.

It was going to receive a console port but it was quickly canceled. Most likely because of all the changes in game development. There was no room for a lightgun game on the console market.

Oooh looks like the CHD files for Carnevil are finally available. Now it can be emulated. Fuck yes.

the AVP aracade game was sweet, I remember that, but you're right about the SNES version, just wasn't as good. Then the AVP games geared away towards the FPS direction unfortunately.

I remember CarnEvil too. It was a difficult shooter but it had great art.

The problem with the Initial D cab was that the only way to simulate g-force while in a high-speed drift is to, more or less, flip you on your side and hold you there. There's no other way to do it. The motion would work a lot better with titles like F-Zero, as you said. Too bad they don't have one in the area, that I've seen.
