Happy 10 Year Anniversary TMBO!!!!
11/22/12 at 00:10:32

It's Thanksgiving again and today I want to do another one of my long-ass/longwinded posts!  This Thanksgiving is special.  You see, ten years ago on Saturday, November 23rd  I got my copy of TMBO.

Like most old school fans, my love of Twisted Metal began in the late nineties with Twisted Metal 2.  It survived through the dark times of 989, and my faith was rewarded a few years later in 2001 with Twisted Metal: Black.

By the fall of 2002 I easily considered Twisted Metal: Black my favorite game of all time, but I was by that point only playing it once through on co-op with my bro every few weeks.  Like most games, even the best ones, the passion starts to die off.   When I look back at my years of Twisted Metal fandom though, it really doesn’t start until 2002.  That’s when I discovered a whole new level of enjoying a video game series.  A passion that wouldn't die off in days, weeks, or even months, but years . . .  if ever.

Somewhere around September I was reading an Electronic Gaming Monthly about Sony’s new online service, and I found out from the magazine that TMBO was only going to be available for a limited time, for FREE, if you bought a network adapter.  You bought the adapter for $40, mailed in a coupon, and TMBO would arrive a few weeks later.  Best deal ever!

Up until that time, I had never planned on buying a network adapter.  I was a poor, broke, college kid, and I didn’t even have internet.  However, the thought of never being able to own TMBO scared the crap out of me and so I hunted all over town . . . and then the towns next to me, for a network adapter and finally found ONE to purchase.   I quickly filled the form out, mailed it in, and forgot about it.

And then came the 23rd of November.  As I looked down at that package sitting on my desk I suddenly had an overwhelming desire to try it out.  I realized that somewhere out there people were testing their skills on other human beings, and my head imagined a million online battles in a split second.

My parents were away for a week on vacation, and from my apartment I somehow managed to recall my father’s login information for his dial up account (remember dial up?) and pretty soon I was witnessing the TMBO lobby.  I couldn’t join broadband games, only 1 on 1’s due to my slow connection speed.  That night, I didn’t join any.  It was late, and I had the next day off.  I wanted to wake up refreshed and ready to face my toughest opponents.  I looked at the rooms for a minute, and logged of.

I can still remember how anxious I was to play the next morning.  Error free, I logged into the TMBO server and looked at the rooms.  I still remember the first broadband room (out of my reach) that caught my eyes.  It was called, “Morning Murderers.”  Ah memories.

I played almost nonstop on dial up for a week.  I felt invincible . . . there were so many schmucks new to car combat that I didn’t lose any matches.  It was easy to believe you were the best in those early days if you were a longtime Twisted Metal fan.  So many players, and so little skill.  Eventually my Dad grew tired of me always calling up to ask if I could borrow his internet and so I sprang for my own DSL connection.  It cost a lot and I had no idea how I would pay for it .  .  . but it was SO worth it.  All I had to do was never eat dinner and I could cover the cost.

My undefeated status didn’t last more than a week at best.  Roket from TMA provided my first challenge.  Evil Ed was the first player to absolutely kick the shit out of me.  It wasn’t even close . . . that was humbling.  In the early days of TMBO no one knew about the chat, and so people naturally gravitated towards TMA as for a while it was the only place to really communicate.  Alliances were formed, friendships, rivalries, and in fact, entire Twisted Metal nations formed and crumbled.
The best players remained in a state of flux.  Old champions either left, or were vanquished, and new ones took their places.  Incognito, who built the game, continued to play with us and comment from time to time on the message boards.  It was truly a golden age for many of us to be a Twisted Metal fan.

Eventually the community, like all online communities, shrank big time.  Oddly enough, it is these times that are my fondest memories.  There are some of us who pretty much lived through the entire server right down until there were only a handful of us left.  We played right up until the final night the server was pulled.  For those who adore the new game, there’s a lesson in this.  It might be freaky that the community is shrinking . . . but there are some serious upsides to it too.  Eventually, it will feel like your game.

With TMBO, one night we were having an eight player broadband match, and the next morning the server was gone . . . March 2007 . . . a day that will live in infamy.  There was no warning, no goodbyes.  For nearly five years we lived in Sweet Tooth’s head, and then one day we were back in the real world.  It was, perhaps, as it should be.  A goodbye really didn’t fit the universe.  The sudden death of the server could be interpreted as a tip of the hat to John Doe or Agent Stone.

Perhaps the hardest thing for TMB fans like me is how agonizingly out of reach a proper sequel was.  I realize now, at least in some way, what the hardcore of fans of TM2 felt that could never really move on.  All of us knew EXACTLY what a proper sequel should have been.  We even believed one could be fashioned that would also appease the huge fans of TM2.  Throw in a working voice chat, a mode to remove healths, a larger universe, stronger ramming for those Nazis, and the same complex balance of offensive and defensive car combat and you had a winner.  Damn it.

In a world of sequels it only made sense that such a successful and critically acclaimed game would get a sequel.  Yet, one never came.  When finally we were given TMHO, many TMB fans laid down the $350+ just to play the damn thing only to discover to our chagrin that TMHO was Twisted Metal: Light.  Seven years later, when we would do practically the same thing for Twisted Metal Head On: Rebooted . . . well there’s only so many times you can keep hoping for the sun to come out.

It is so weird to me, as I move through life, that so many things come so CLOSE to perfection only to suddenly lose their steam and drizzle out (Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Star Trek, Star Wars, Sony).  Perfection is always tantalizingly, or perhaps agonizingly, just out of reach.   C’est la vie . . . people have said that nothing is real until it’s gone.  Maybe that is where true Thanksgiving comes from.  It’s that point where you look back and realize you’ve lost something, or worse, someone special.

I know some on here rage when I say such things, and probably they notice just a wee bit of “this is personal” with me, and others.  It’s true . . . there is a bitter tragedy to a hardcore fan like myself.  I am genuinely glad for those who can adore the new game, and genuinely a bit bitter that I was unable to do the same.

This is not about the new game though.  The chapter of Twisted Metal fandom, at least for me, is winding down.  It isn’t a “never say never” kind of ultimatum, it’s more of a “time to get with the times buddy” for me.  I have now missed the fan bus on two Twisted Metal releases (TMHO/TM:PS3).  There is no certainty of a new Twisted Metal anytime soon, and if it comes, there is no reason to believe I will love it.  After all, looking at the history of the series, I loved four titles (TM, TM2, TMSB, TMB) and was left either disappointed or despising four others (TMHO, TM:PS3, TM4, TM3).  Those aren’t good odds.  Fifty/Fifty.

Before I end this post, I wanted to mention every player’s names from TMBO that I could recall . . . while I still CAN remember you.  Sadly my memory keeps fading over the years and I know I’ve already forgotten some important ones.  I am only mentioning them if I ever saw them in a game. I owe them a great debt, even if we hated each other. Looking back now, you created the flavor that is what I truly miss most.

Roket, Evil Ed, Son of Calypso, Desert Colossus, Crystal, White Knight, In Blood, Godfather Grimm, Night, Joker, C4, Snake Pit, In Flames, Slice'n Dice, Whattup Dog, CAPT, Finger of God, Rabid, All the KFC players, Thumpy and the Dev Inc. Crew, Nightshade, Mortimer, Xizor, Simkar, Roadie, Maartyrr, Eakius, Carnage, Magnum, Drop Gems, Canadiens 8, Devilgene, Angelique, Alunkiel, Lemmywinks, Surgeon, SynthR, Methid Man, Casper, LivingColour, PsychoSeven, BJYman, Jmotruck, Joe Twisted, Enjakill, Killer the 1st, Toasty, Slayer, jailbird, Yellowjacket, Dr. Jones, Mapster, Aldo Mex,Zivhin, YUCK><FOU, Rice in my Sock, Mixed Emotions, Violent Energy, Guardian, and Cujo.

Now, a special shout out to “The Night Crew.”  These are the players who pretty much stuck it out from start to finish.  They were the best of the best, and they knew it, and all of us had the most fun.  It felt like our server.  It kind of was.

Stitches, Legend, Terror Weapon, Mito, Mikey, Sinnistergrin, Venom, Darkforce, Kemmler (we kind of adopted you, but you were playing on the Europe server BEFORE so you were a diehard too), Apocalypse, Evil Adolph, Vicente, Tony, and Hi.

Finally, I’d like to give a shout out to the revival group.  TMBO: The Next Generation.  There is a lot of overlap here since it’s mostly made up of vets from the old era, but this group has kept TMBO alive for a little over a year now.  We’re a shrinking group, and we might be in the twilight of it all, but your efforts allowed for us to say this game lived to see its tenth birthday, and some of my fondest memories of TMB have been with this new crowd:

Roadie, Darkforce, Onion (sorry . . . it’s HONESTLY out of respect Orion, really), Klrgrn, Night, Mikey (RIP), and Tony.  Mito for a short time too before you left . . . you bastard.

Happy ten year anniversary Twisted Metal: Black ONLINE.  You were everything you promised you would be and more!  It’s sad your womb was barren and you never had a child, but with more than half a decade of amazing fun . . . does it really matter anyway?

Anyone else who would like to wish TMBO a happy anniversary (it officially turned ten in September) please do so!  Or any pissed off TMPS3 fans who would like to get revenge and derail this thread, feel free as well!  I know all too well that Karma is a bitch!  Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Photo Notes-  Below is my TMB collection.  From top left to right and working down: TMB Greatest Hits package with a copy of TMBO, original TMBO disk, original TMBO game manual, the TMBO slip in the adapter package that you mailed in to get the game, Electronic Gaming Mag that got me to dream and act on the free offer, original copy of TMB, an unopened copy of the package Sony would send you back, my original TMBO case, and the network adapter with the red sticker telling you about TMBO.

Ten years is a third of my life.

My memories of TMBO are bizarrely vivid. I can play them in my head like remembering scenes from a seemingly never ending Japanese manga. I remember hundreds of specific games, scores, and especially specific images of battle, often turning points. I remember the context of the games and hundreds of quotes from my opponents and my teammates. If TMBO were a real place, and took tourists, I could be a tour guide and walk everyone through every level, pointing to places where intense brawls and even massacres happened, locations where highly respected players quit out of games after getting hit by reticles, where game turning and even POLTICALLY turning engagements occurred, including narratives from the afterward repercussions on TMA's TMBO board. I could tell you all several "(player name)'s Last Stand" stories.

I could tell you all of game-changing strategies, who developed them, when they were implemented, how they affected the landscape, and how long it took players to find counters. I could tell you all about how certain new strategies, tactics, and discoveries completely mutated the car tiers (with "Axel is GOD" being the only constant, of course), and how certain cars got phased in and out of gameplay as a result of these developments. I could talk about the dozens and dozens of major mistakes and errors in judgment that the community made, why the mistakes were made, and even the bullshit that lives on to this day as a result and how it influenced TMHO and TM2012. I could tell you who hated who's guts and why, and which grudges still live on to this day. I could talk of which game setups became popular at what times, how they were developed and evolved, and how they either fell out of favor or became classic game models.

Wow.

Many people have passing interests in their lives. They end up just "tasting" many of the hobbies and interests that are available to the world. That's never been the case with me. When I find something captivating, I tend to latch on and milk it for all it's worth. Holy crap, I spent so much time with this one. Only a couple of my hobbies have had more time invested. It's tragic that so much of the memories, knowledge, experience, and skills I gained from my five year run with this game are so contained and exclusive to the game and not applicable to other things, but I can safely say that the game made me a better problem solver, and can also say that I was freakishly good at this game.

Yes, that's right. There is no one on this planet who I haven't played before that could even make me break a sweat. The game just has too many secrets. I know a lot of new faces here find that offensive for some reason. Nearly every gamer dreams of being a BOSS, I guess. Hahaha consider it a challenge then. Come and get me if you're curious! Heck, while you're dying on the other end, I could be telling you hilarious stories and silly history and explaining exactly how I'm doing what I'm doing over skype or something, and then we can post a recording here. HAHAHA

Oh man. I have to admit, part of me must be Klingon. I so thirst for battle, and after so many years of no game, part of me still dreams of quenching my thirst. Hopefully, I can get online soon and party with TMBO's new undead night crew. I haven't played in so long.

Too bad it's over. It's not coming back.

Could not have said it better myself Kilrahi, I feel the same way.
I feel like junking my PS3 and buying several PS2 systems to get TMBO going again via the LAN X-link.

I miss playing. Halo 4 has been absorbing all of my time as of late, but I'll be ready to jump back in the fray if any of you message me.

Long live TMBO

My ten year anniversary for TMBO is December 4th 2012... Dec 4th 2002 was my first day of TMBO. And I can also recall what games I first hopped into and who was in them!

I was fortunate enough to have broadband the entire time (since 1997) so I jumped straight into the 8 player matches.

It was my first and best console online experience by far.

Thx for shoutouts Kilrahi, and thanks for helping keep the new night crew alive and kicking, you're the busiest of us all and you still make it happen most of the time. And we may be few in number but we still have fun! And yes, RIP Mikey Sad

Stitches, Thumpy, this means you both have to play... relive some past glory Smiley

Finally, a post on TT that's actually worth a fuck. Very nice, Kilrahi.

While I enjoy reading stuff like this, it's almost always a double-edged sword. It makes missing the TMBO era that much harder, knowing that I should have been there. I should be able to recall sleepless nights and streams of memories about this game, and it's my own fault that I missed out. It was my decision to "grow up" and put gaming on the backburner. It's like a punch in the stomach knowing that I picked the WORST possible time to do so.

I remember reading about the then-upcoming Twisted Metal game in EGM (had to have been EGM; I don't think I had a Gamepro scrip at the time) months before the game dropped in 1995. It was at least a 10-page spread that covered the cars and drivers, the arenas... And I was mesmerized. I knew before even touching the game that it'd be something I'd go on about for years. That game is the reason I moved on from the Genesis to the PlayStation (I talked my dad into going halfsies with my mom on it lol), Black is the reason I moved on to the PS2, and TM2012 is the reason I bought a PS3. For seventeen years now, it's always been about Twisted Metal for me. Shitty Halloween costumes, self-painted Hot Wheels, bedroom wall posters. It's been an obsession, and my only regret is that I let it slip away from me.

While I've long missed my own ten-year anniversary with TM, TMBO has certainly made a lot of gamers happy, and shed light onto a game that who knows how many people had forgotten about. Happy Ten, TMBO.

Even though I never played TMBO or any TM online until TMPS3, I will say all of you guys have a flaming passion for this series and I wish I would've joined in on all the fun. But unfortunately I had no understanding of the internet at the time since I was too young to comprehend it, so I am very jealous. Someone post some gameplays up on this thread so we can see what went down.

Well damn Magnum . . . I look forward in reading your message.  That sucks.

Thanks to all who responded to tip the hat to this old gal.  I hope there's more.

Oh, and of course, if anyone ever wants to learn how to play with Kai we have a tech support crew that is happy to help.  All are welcome.

I once thought about buying TMBO. I never played my PS2 online before. Does it let you play the multiplayer only stages like the Power Plant in single player?

Yes any stage is available to be played with any number of players or any car. Dogpound with 8 minions... yeep.

But the game really doesn't have a single player mode, you can only play solo with up to two bots max. It is TMBO afterall.. just an online component to TMB.

Going to try this again.

Back in the spring of 2002, I got an e-mail from the Playstation Underground asking if I would be interested in being a Beta Tester for Sony's 1st venture into console gaming. I was already a member for about a year previous, and was a subscriber to Playstation Magazine. That's how I got the Underground account through them and Gamestop. I was reading up about how Sony was going online to compete with 360 so I thought that was awesome.

I said "FUCK YEA!!" It was under the condition that you answer questions via e-mail about gameplay. I had the choice to take either TMBO, or Socom. Considering that I loved TM2, and TMB, this was a complete no brainer. Play TM with REAL people?!? Holy shit!

...

So in April I got the the game and the Network Adapter, and immediately started playing. This is gaming history really. So I played the game and gave my feedback about what I thought worked and what didn't/ It wasn't like I could type out a responce and send it in. I think that's where Sony went wrong because, it was strait line questions, choose a,b,c,d. I think it would've went better if people could write out thoughts instead of pre-made questions, and frameable answers. But anyway.....WHO THE FUCK CARES?!?! I'M PLAYING TMBO with REAL people!!

On Dial-up!! I was roped into a 2 year contact that expired in spring of 2003 so, I was in Dial-Up hell for 6 months untill then. So at the end of May, I sent back the game disc and Network Adapter per agreement, and in Septemeber 2002, my reward was the game disc, and a FREE Network Adapter! I was ready day 1!!

So I hop online and make a room. .357 rounds for you. Sometimes I'd make rooms with the name "SHUT UP AND DIE!!" That always got someone into the game. The 1st couple of weeks were a blur. I don't recall a whole lot of people that came into my game, but I sure remember the ones that came in and beat my ass. SOC, was one of them. I hated him at 1st. I couldn't beat him at all, and would always get me to quit out. That was the thing back then. Get people to quit out. It got so bad for me, because instead of changing tactics and maps, I'd run out of weapons.

Hence my foray into Unlimited weapons. At 1st it was arkward but, I took to it like a duck to water really. As a matter of fact, the "Skill Weapon Shuffle" wasn't all I did like alot of Unlim players. As strange as it sounds, the ones who could out duel their weapons and relics the best, would be on top. I finnaly could be competative!

Not really looking back. What a crutch that was. SOC would beat me down even worse than without Unlims. Some other people too, from TMA would jump into my games and just decimate me. Never once did I really ever post at TMA. I saw there room names and stuff and lurked at the site for a small bit but, I had Dial Up and mostly everyone had BB. (Broadband) But since I was always getting my ass kicked by them, I figured I'd say a "Hello" post. That didn't go over really well. Everyone remebered me being Unlims, and along the same lines as Hatemachine and Hi.

I knew that name. Hated him. He really was a 1st class asshole. Even for Unlimers. Hated Hi too. Our battles in Unlims were always really intence but, I never liked how he ran over your dead spot after a kill.

So after awile posting at TMA and keeping my head down, and not being a jackass since I was already on a short shit list, I had SOC join one of my games under a different name. Now by this time the chat was discovered, and that made or broke alot of games. So after beating my ass in Unlims, he askes me to play him in his game for Net Damage. The deal was I couldn't quit out, and he'd tell me his name. So I do, and get whooped for -700. Even though I lost miserably, he complimented me by taking the beating and not quitting out like I ussually do.

???

So he says he'd be right back and sure enough, it was mind blowing to see Son Of Calypso rejoin my room. So from there on out, he took me under his wing and made me a better player. I never was able to beat him really. I'll always credit him for helping me become a better player, and also a member of TMA when he went of of his way to speak up for me. That ment alot. Then I ran into Kilrahi.

1st time I really met this guy was in Junkyard. He joins my room and I do what I always do, grab full as soon as they come up to keep him from taking them. I never realized he didn't use them. So after the game, he chats at me and says I'm a jerk for grabbing all the fulls, and he'd kick my ass if it wasn't for that. So I comment back that's fine. I won't grab fulls, or minis.

The epic battles we had playing in Plant as Brimstone and Shadow were fucking awesome. He'd trade off every now and then and I'd play Stitches since he was there as well. Great times.

So in March 2003, I FINNALY GET BROADBAND!! Just so happens the 1st broadband game I get into has SOC and Roadie trying to make a mode where you pick teams, and you 2v2 in the middle of Subburbs, and you endure as long as you can for your team, and your captians are the last to join. We had Treatz, Dr Jones, Mapster, and I can't remember the other 2. Dammit. Anyway, since I wasn't all that great, I went 1st and got demolished by Treatz. It was so unreal to finnially experiance 8 players. OMFG I still have shivers remembering that. I made a post about my comming out party at TMA, and from there on out, I was a respected player finnaly.

I'd still jump into, or make Unlim games though when noone was on and I was board. I was doing it for fun now so, I didn't take it seriously. I would make alieses and make rooms, join rooms. I'd play more "TMA" games of course but, there was something about Unlims that was always fun for me. Hence why I used alieses so noone at TMA would really know, or think I reverted back. I gaurded them ferociously too. Noone knew who Black Dragon was untill I made sure I didn't care people knew. I had enough rep at TMA at that time to not worry about it and besides, I found out alot of other TMAers did it too to fuck with people like Hatemachine or Hi.

Speaking of Hi. I was under one of my alieses, and YOU CAN'T WIN enters my Unlim room. I hated that name as well from my earlier days. We were on Loop and i was my ussual Grim and he was of course Minion. We went at it for at least 2 hours in a kills game because we couldn't get the edge on one another. When we finnaly finish the game by me winning it, he chats into the room GG. I was like fine.....I'll play along.

So after a few games with us being pretty even, he says he knows my screen name, and am I a part of TMA? I said yea, and he asks why am I playing Unlims if I'm "TMA?" So I did what SOC did to me and rejoined his room as Magnum. It blew his mind! He couldn't belive it was me! So I said, Who the hell are you? He comes back in as Hi!. Well, from there he got curious about how we at TMA play and I showed him, and coached him just like SOC did for me. In the end, he became a legitamate TMA'er too with others helping him out along the way. Pretty cool IMO.

Also my Bro Venom for helping me out in the twilight years of TMBO. It was a hell of alot of fun seeing you become one of the premier players of the game. I might not have been able to pick up alot of what you taught me but, it was alot of fun playing with you man. Also putting up with my incompetent ass as far as being tech savvy goes, and getting me set up with Kai twice.

I won't be able to remember everything but there are some things that I can skate by.

The Endurance matches that Angel or Alunkel would hold every now and then. I only played in a few but holy shit, they were crazy.

Watching Wolfenhex and Mapster doing crazy shit off the maps and field of play. I swear to God dude. I have no idea how the fuck Mapster did some of that shit. Finding the baby picture in the Serers map and chucking gas cans on it. Hilarious.

The PTK matches we had that were pretty Epic. I rememeber one in perticular where Rabid was the King and he was just BOSS beating down those that were left in Jumkyard. That was insane.

Almost every night in chat when it was discovered. The crazy shit we could say. The way we worked around the retarted filter to cuss anyway. Saying things like "I'll chuck my dirty underwear at you" to Evil Adolf, and was forever used as a legit threat at TMA by me. oYo

And lets not forget all the players that played this game to make it one of the best gaming experiances in my entire life. You all know who you are that played with me, and had a blast doing so. Thanks for all the memories of TMBO, and how much of my life was sucked into playing this game.

Also want to thank Sony, Dave and Scott, and entire crew who made it possible.

G'night!

Great posts.

Magnum, yours was especially awesome to me.  Yours always are because you had such a unique perspective on it.

It was cool to see the image you attached.  It's like a relic of TMBO history.  Good stuff, and it's awesome they sent you a free game and adaptor for testing that.  You were more than just a casual tester, and so it's neat that they recognized it.

I definitely feel bad and pity everyone who missed the awesome TMBO experience.  It was a cool time to be a fan . . . in my opinion the best.  I can understand how you missed it though, like I said in my post above, I came very, very close to missing it myself.

That is a very good question.  Honestly, this is an unsolved mystery.  However, our initial investigation revealed three possibilities, in order of the most likely:

1.  Mikey died tragically while helping an old woman across the street.  He was suddenly  t-boned by a bus.

2.  Mikey never actually existed.

3.  Mikey joined the circus as "The World's Ugliest Man."

We continue to hope for some type of confirmation.
