So I'm making a video game...
10/18/12 at 14:26:27

Hello everyone, remember me?  I haven't been very active on TMA in a while because I've been very busy.  Busy with what?  Making my own video game with fellow TMA'er Charlaxy/Charybdis!  We also have music done by SynthR.

We have been working hard on it for quite a while and it's finally time for that work to be seen.  The game is still in development, but there is now a playable demo of it that you can download and try.  We'd love to get some feedback from fellow TMA'ers.  I know a lot of you have a passion for video games.

You can check it out at: http://areyousquared.com

If you like it, be sure to tell your friends.  We can really use as much support as we can get right now.  We're pushing to get it onto Steam through Greenlight.  If you want to help, you can vote for it here:
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=101032123

Thank you for your time and for being a great community for all these years.

Your game hurts my eyes and the music sucks. These puzzles baffle my brain. Modern Warfare is still superior.

I love this game. Right now i'm working on and off on creating a level for it. I'll make sure to post it here. It's going to be more of a traditional style level compared to the ones featured in the current build. More of a test of reflexes with a few brainteasers.

I'll post a video playthrough of the game once i finish constructing my level. I hope i can help spread the word a little for you Wolfenhex. It's a good game and the editor is very well made.

By the way if you are using the editor remember to stretch blocks for floors and walls instead of simply placing them one at a time. By stretching them you cut down on the number of blocks used to create the level. I almost finished my level then i figured that out from Wolfenhex. So now i'm using that knowledge to create a much larger level in my spare time.

I like the color and gravity logic in the game. Though if i had to chose something i think could be done better it would be the combat. Something about the projectiles feels a little off. Like they should have longer range and move a bit more slowly to better facilitate weapon avoidance. as a part of the game. As it is i kind of feel like i'm forced to get in close and take hits.

I'll be sure to get better music for the sequel and change the gameplay to be more like Modern Warfare.  I think that would work out well, the art style and gameplay is similar.

Thank you for all the feedback Hellbent.  I'm glad you like the game and I am looking forward to seeing your level.

The combat does need some work.  It's better than it used to be, but it's still not perfect.

Also thank you for helping spread the word.  I really need help with that.  It seems very hard to get people to check out a new indie game.

This game doesn't happen to run on OpenGL 2.1 (or anything above) does it? It locks up when it launches, and this is the same problem I had with FTL: Faster Than Light. Opens, sound plays, but nothing renders in the window, and Windows informs me that it is unresponsive.

Did you use the installer?  What OS do you use?  32 or 64 bit?

I don't know what version of OpenGL is required.  I was trying to figure that out and haven't yet.  The game probably doesn't require the latest version but I don't know how much control over that I have in C++/CLI.

Thank you for making me aware of this problem though.  If I can figure out how to fix it (or at least warn you instead of crashing), I will.

This might not help, but try giving this an install:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=23471

Over the weekend we took Pixel to a local gaming convention and when we installed it on the demo computer (which was a fresh installation of Windows) the game wouldn't work.  We tracked it down to DirectX 9 not being installed.  Vista/7 come with DirectX 10/11 and those aren't fully backwards compatiable with DirectX 9.  After installing that, it worked perfectly.

Here is a video of our table at the event if anyone is interested:

Very well.  Me and Charlotte took it to two conventions so far: ChargerCon & Hama-Con

We are planning on bringing it to other conventions, but so far no one has replied to my e-mails.

Here is a video of us at ChargerCon:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ss1HU2eEC90

Just about everyone seemed to like it and at both conventions.  The leaderboard got competitive near the end.  One of the top players at Hama-Con was both red-green & yellow-blue colorblind, so that helped show us that our colorblind mode worked good.

It was a great opportunity to get feedback, both from people talking to us and just watching people play and see what they do.

We also met a lot of great people.  We met someone that does YouTube videos of games (who decided to do a couple for our game), someone from the local news, and some people that work for Curse, Inc (they sponsored ChargerCon).  Plus a lot of great gamers.

Right now working on the game is on hold due to some unrelated issues, but it should pick up again.

The next convention we are trying to get into is: Chattacon

Let me know if you know any other good conventions in the southeast US.  Would be great to run into some TMA members.

Chattacon finally got back to us -- less than two weeks before the convention.  Not enough time for us to make a trip there.

The next convention on the list is Con Nooga.  Which takes place in the exact same hotel as Chattacon.

We had a great time at the two conventions we went to.  It's too bad Chattacon didn't work out.  It sounds like they really wanted us to come.  Maybe next year.

I hope you get to exhibit the game to them next year.

Sorry i got sidetracked away from building that level. My video recording has came to a halt as i'm getting adjusted to my new hardware. I plan to go all out in the level editor when i get around to it.

Let me know if you are anywhere near Texas for a convention. I'll try to come by. It sounds fun.
