I can't believe people are complaining about repetition in specials. Based on these magazine pages, this game has way more depth in specials than any past TM game. How can you say there's too much repetition when TM1 had 75% straight shooting specials? And everyone still loves that game.
Warthog having a weak spot when he's using his crush special?? That's amazing. Think of the potential strategies there. If you're up against Warthog, load up on power missiles. When he comes near, throw up a shield and smash him with 2 power missiles. Or pick Mr. Grimm and wipe him out with 1 flaming chainsaw. Based on this fact alone, Warthog will play WAY differently than Axel. And guess what? It looks like we finally got the Hammerhead style vehicle we always wanted. I look forward to CRUSHING lots with Warthog. EDIT: Let's not forget that Warthog will have great turbo ram damage without using a special whereas Axel has weak turbo ram damage. This will be another important distinguishing factor.
Darkside has insanely good ramming AND retains his TMB ramming special? Perfect.
Outlaw has extra turbo and strong ram damage?? Genious idea...lead ramming is going to be fun with this guy.
Shadow's special does more damage the longer it travels?? Nice! We've been asking them to do that for YEARS. In TMBO, you could use Shadow and JYD's specials just like an Axel shockwave blast if you double clicked the button. Now this lame, unskilled tactic is abolished.
Looks like JYD has a cool T-slide type ram move. Robot ST's swiping attack and his airborne "Sweet Slam" seem like really cool specials. Roadboat retains Mr. Slam's special with a cool new twist.
Also very cool how different cars break out of freeze/EMP faster and how some can jump higher, burn through AA slower, burn through turbo slower, etc, etc. This is going to make every car feel drastically different.
Based on what I'm reading on these magazine spreads, ESP has listened to us. They've given us the big dogs we wanted, and they're coming with cool, unique specials. TMBO Darkside and his t-slides, TMBO Axel and his wheels of death, TM2 Hammerhead in the form of Warthog with his CRUSH, a sick new version of Sweettooth that seems to play even more head-on than past games, TMBO JYD with a bonus up-close special, TM2 Mr. Slam in the form of Roadboat. And if that's not enough, we also get Outlaw who seems like he'll be able to play quite aggressively. Don't forget Juggernaut.
It seems like they gave all of the fast cars good up-close specials and fairly weak distance specials. This is the perfect formula for a TM game. It means the fast cars can't run and dick around all game. If they want to win, they'll have to learn how to get into the heart of the battle and inflict damage close-up. It really sucked chasing around Roadkill/Brimstone/Spectre all game with Darkside/Manslaughter in TMBO. We might not have to worry too much about that anymore. Looks like Darkside and Sweettooth have really accurate low damage specials to finish off targets in red health, another nice addition.
Kamikaze looks like a really cool vehicle. Save up a few specials, use an EMP blast special, then use your AA freezes and flamethrower special weapon to wreak havoc. If you find you're getting killed a lot by Kamikaze, you can counter by picking a car like Mr. Grimm or JYD because they break out of the EMP very quickly. However, a car like Darkside will likely get owned by Kamikaze since he says disabled longer by the EMP. I think this is an excellent addition and will add heaps of depth to the game.
