The beginning scrawl is a bit of a lie
XLink Kai was known years ago, and tested... but was deemed a bit too difficult and laggy. However in 2010 I noticed people were playing it online with more than 2 players with relative ease. So the program has come a long way and definitely is better now than back then. FYI, the TMBO North American Server went dead in 2007 and I think Euro server went down 2008.
TM2PC has been online since forever, TMA been playing that since... 2000 and before? Whenever the Kali program went live is when people played bigger games on their server. When TMBO was online yes people still played TM2PC a lot and very frequently. I myself led a mass exodus of TMBO players to TM2PC in summer of 03, got lots of people to try it out. A lot of folks never left TM2PC to try/play TMBO, and vice versa.
I started playing TM2PC in 1999. When I joined, there was already a fairly decent community. Mortimer, Soltakr, AIC3D, Bjyman, Nightshade, Spyda, Hellbent, Reaper, Bloodshed, EvilED, DJ, BrianEvol, CodeMatt, X-man, Mosh, Rockyblboa, Eakius, maartyrr, andy845, MidKnight, and MantaRay. A few others I can't remember. I think Rocketlvr joined at the same time as me. TM2PC has been going almost as long as TMA has been around.
All I remember when I started playing was how much of a dick Bloodshed was. OBOBE - OBEY BLOODSHED OR BE ELIMINATED
By about 2000, the game was being played a lot more frequently. People started getting broadband connections and playing games with 5+ players. Before that, a game with 4 was considered too laggy.
The release of TMB caused a huge explosion of players towards TMA. This lead to a surge of TM2PC players as the game was constantly being advertised on the boards. In order to be a respected TMA poster, it was highly encouraged to play TM2PC. New players like DarkAce and TheShadow joined the scene. Old pros such as BrianEvol could no longer dominate games. Apparently Bloodshed got arrested for something. DJ got addicted to CounterStrike. Many other older players started to disappear.
Strangely enough, the hay day of TM2PC would not come until much later. There were two reasons for this. 1) Mortimer (TMA founder) got a broadband connection. 2) A well respected TMA poster and TMBO player named Roadie decided to lead a defection of TMBO players to become TM2PC players. He brought at least 10 players with him, many of which stayed around for at least a year or so. I'm having a hard time remembering most of the names, maybe Roadie could help me out on this. AIC3D's little brother Junior (now known as AfroDizziac) joined around this time too, and he became a major player in the years to come. He's one of the last remaining active players to this day.
Anyways...Roadie, myself, and Mortimer were hosting Kali games on an almost daily basis. At this point, everyone had broadband so we were able to do lots of 3v3s and 4v4s. Before this, 4v4s were unheard of, but we had enough players that we attempted them every night. Due to Kali network issues, it was hard to get more than 5 players to connect, but we were addicted. We would stay up all night trying to get those epic 4v4 games. We'd often play until the sun came up. Ah, those were the days.
The TM2PC games slowed down a bit in 2004. A lot of players went back to TMBO. Mortimer and I started playing Command & Conquer Zero Hour a lot. Interest faded, but we still got on to play a few times a week. This lasted for a year or so, and then I went on a hiatus so someone else will have to fill in the blanks for me. I think I came back in 2008. But at that point, TM2PC was almost unplayable because everyone had new computers and new versions of windows. A combination of Windows Vista/7 and new motherboards caused TM2PC to be incompatible. Mortimer made a program thru VMware that allowed us to play TM2PC again, but not many people were hardcore enough to keep playing.
We still try to get games going now, but interest is at an ultimate low. Hopefully the new TM will be good enough that we can put the nail on the TM2PC coffin and give it a proper burial.
