The games i'm most proud of beating are the ones that are so difficult and painful that i would never play them again. Even if i lost my save file or achievement or whatever.

I don't care if you have 10,000 gamerscore. If you have not gotten Golden God on Super Meat Boy. Or beat IWTBTG at least once. Then your achievements mean as much as those trophies they give to all the kids at the end of soccer season.

Most of those "achievements" are merely evidence of spare time wasted to boost points. Not evidence of skill.

Just like the douchebags at the top of the leaderboards typically suck at the game but have tons of time to dump into boosting points.

I'm not too into getting the "hard" ones. The seriously difficult ones tend to be time drains like the 24 hour one in Dead Rising or any of the Seriously ones. If i felt the urge to unlock every single weapon and beat Inferno on EDF. I totally would. But i simply don't feel any sense of achievement from doing that kind of thing.

I view them in the same way that i do the leader boards. Most people do not go for the very hard challenges without long repetitive tactics.

But if you want a challenge. Unlock The Guy in Super Meat Boy. Let me know how hard that was for you. That is less than a 10th of the hell i went through beating I Wanna Be the Guy.

Unlocking the weapons in EDF takes ZERO skill. They are random drops on specific levels. Beating the same level over and over again to get a gun takes only time. Skill is hardly a factor. Not to mention the lag in the inferno mode giving you a slow motion bonus. Easy.

Please don't even speak about the skill in killing in the game.  If you actually miss hitting any of the enemies i'd be shocked. The only kills that took skills were detonating remote bombs on enemy spawning points. Even then that is about as hard as getting up right now and throwing a coke can near your mailbox.

Getting full achievements in EDF is the equivalent of being level 60 in Warcraft. If you use a strategy guide you can do it in a few hours. If you don't use a strategy guide you will still eventually get it by simply grinding it out. Also since you gain more health points the more you play, the task becomes even easier.

EDF isn't a hard game if you have basic battlefield awareness and the ability to remember a couple of spawn points. The game just likes to intimidate you by giving you crap weapons at level 1. Once you start getting weapons it's simply a matter of time before you beat it.

No skill. Merely time. I could teach Magnum wife to do it.

I love EDF. But it's a stress relief game like Dead Rising. It's not a game of skill

But back to lame bullshit achievements that people should be ashamed of having.

How about Seriously 2.0? I remember you guys got that by replaying the Burmak chapter over and over again. What an accomplishment.

Why would you even play Kung Fu Panda or those shitty NBA games? By simply having those i can tell you don't earn your achievements by playing the game like a normal gamer. You get games specifically to boost your ego score.

If i was an achievement hunter. I would delete my account and start over again so the herpes sores of NBA09 and Kung Fu Panda weren't on my account.

I don't really care. But the gamer in me has to mention that your Gamer Score is merely a reflection of your own ego.

Win a real tournament if you would like to prove me wrong.

Or just play a game of SFA2 with Innately. Beat him and i'll never make fun of your ego counter ever again.

Thinking about it even deeper. You could equate a gamerscore to how little work a person does combined with how much money they are given.

Because if they were skill based and not time drains. A player with skill  would crush the 30,000k mark in a couple of days.

Umad bro?

Lol you try playing the Last level of EDF on inferno and tell me that doesn't require skill. There are about 100000 enemies on screen shooting you at once, and you have dance around like a mexican jumping bean to last more than a minute. All while you are trying to bring down a virtually unstoppable mothership.

Ya there was a time I played games just for points. Don't do that anymore, haven't for a long time. Some games I love so much I just want 100% completion though, Gears 2 was one of them, it has nothing to do with ego counting, its more of completionist hobby (hard to understand, no?). And Seriously 2.0 was a design flaw from the beginning, grinding the brumak ride is literally the only way to achieve it.

The gamer in YOU has to remind ME of stupid games that I played? Why do you care so much about my boosting ways from the past? Obviously you have some sort of beef that I do not care for.

Play SFA2 with Innately? Ok when he plays me in Gears3. See what I did there? O NOES! How bout I play you in TM2PC? O WAIT, I dun that already a million times, and I think ya sucked the hard one.

I take back some of the crap i've said about Gears. Gears 1 and 2 had severe network problems and balance issues (1 shot downs with active sniper, bad host advantage, ect...). Gears 3 does have skill involved because the game state is solid and the one hit kill weapons are either rare or take skill to use.

It's not Counter Strike, UT2004, or SFA2 level. But it's a grade under and that is damn good. Right there with Halo.

My point is that the ego score is just a timeline for which games you played and when you beat them. Kinda like the kid in the Wizard who owned every NES game and had the Power Glove.

You need to watch the Wizard roadie.

I wouldn't know, really.  Then again, being a former tournament player, myself, I'm of the mind to assert that the the skill-level required for any competitive game is determined by the level of play of the community.

Then, once gameplay breaks down and the mechanics are understood completely, the meta-game element develops more concisely and deepens gameplay further still; albeit semi-artificially.

As for SFA2 requiring skill, I can almost disagree with that.  I would say that, more than anything, it simply requires a deep, deep, deep knowledge of the game.  Sure, execution is great, but knowledge gets the job done in the end.  Some of the best CVS2 players had shitty execution, but would win tournaments simply by knowing almost everything about the game.

I would say that, in a way, shooters require more raw skill than fighting games, as fighting games have more in common with chess.  I suppose, though, that an argument could be made which illustrates the ability to out-play your opponent as a skill.  However, the only way to outplay someone in either high level chess or playing tournament-level fighting games is, you guessed it:  knowledge.

At mid-level, you can out-play someone simply by running gimmicks, or guessing right a lot of the time by forcing non-see-able 50/50's.  At high level, though, knowledge prevents such situations from dominating the match via playing several to a dozen moves ahead of yourself.

Aiming a gun with a controller is, to me, a lot of harder to do under pressure than, say, remembering everything to do in every situation whilst baiting your opponent into your web of technical bullshit, pretending to be playing mind-games with them whilst actually playing outside of the mind-game altogether---like playing solid, mathematical poker whilst doing it in such a way that your opponents feel as though you are "gambling" with them.

I also know nothing about how Gears tends to play in a 1v1 situation, as I've always considered it to be a team game.  Isn't it pretty much accepted as such?

In 1 v 1 both players make a dash for the one hit kill power weapons. Then the little icon shows up indicating a weapon has been picked up so each player knows where the other guy is. Then it becomes either a duel of the power weapons, or an ass rape against the dude who was too slow to get to the sniper or boomshot.

If you are just going lancers and shotguns. Then it's all about stealth and taking them out MGS style.

If it's a shotgun duel its like 2 people charging at eachother throwing haymakers. You could toss a coin to see who wins if the players know the basics of the weapon.

A game like Unreal Tournament 2004 requires much more skill due to the wide weapon variety, huge levels, huge amount of levels, extremely balanced weapon distribution, and clean hit detection.

Counter Strike even more so. In Counter Strike it's almost vital to have surround sound and a very keen ear. Hearing the enemy coming up the stairs is not an easy thing to notice but it will win the game. Also there are a wide variety of guns and if you know which gun you are using on what level you can preform much better. For instance certain SMG's are very accurate on their innital shots but are not very powerful. So you can use them to land headshots on snipers at mid range while still having the speedy full auto that SMG's are known for. Not to mention you earn cash by killing to buy upgrades like helmets, body armor, grenades, extra ammo, and more guns.  So you must be wise with every choice you make. You don't just charge in a group for the power weapon.

I love watching Hellbent vs Roadie game debates. Its hilarious read. Thanks guys.

And Roadie, you actually played and finished Kung Fu Panda?

You really want a challenge? Try playing Naughty Bear all the way through from start to finish. You will never want to look at that game again. Hell, you may not even make it to the end.

On the EDF. Enemy spam takes skill to control. But ultimately you are simply herding enemies. It has nothing on Doom Nightmare mode. The simple fact you have unlimited ammunition gives you an unlimited capacity to fight. I do like that you have to earn your health though. But there is practically no level design. So many maps turn into you running a huge pattern. Ultimately the shallowness of the combat in combination with unlimited ammo makes it pretty easy in the world of hard games.

Same goes for Gears of War. Regenerating health gives you tons of room to make mistakes. Though at least in Hardcore mode getting hit in the face actually hurts enough that you have to find cover. Plus there are always weapons laying around so ammo is not much of a concern. Unless you are talking power weapons. They did Hardcore mode right, unless you have coop partners then it becomes way easier.

Not like Twisted Metal where weapon and health conservation come into play. Sure Specials and AA energy regenerates. But that is the good kind of regeneration feature. You don't just fire like crazy knowing there is going to be a rifle with 40 rounds in it off of every dude you kill. You gotta fucking work for your health and weapons. That takes far more skill.

Do you think EDF or Gears 3 online are more difficult to play then Twisted Metal Black or Twisted Metal 2 online against skilled opponents?

Did you guys even play games in the 90's?

Let me know how many times you die trying to get through Gradius 3

Or play Doom 2 on Nightmare and give your self infinite ammo. Let me know if that is easier then EDF on Inferno.

Haha or try Hell World in Super Meat Boy. I love Hell World. That takes unreal timing and memory. I think i died 2,000 times trying to unlock The Kid.

I don't really have any achievements/trophies I'm proud of aside:

"Performed an Assassination against an Elite to survive a fall that would've been fatal. "

It took me about 15 minutes to do, and I had fun doing it, although the cussing would lead you to believe differently.

I'm currently trying to get all the trophies in flOw though. I love that game.
