Twisted Metal: Overdrive
05/10/11 at 01:12:13

The year is 2008. This year marks the thirteenth annual running of the Twisted Metal competition, which is still going strong, thanks to the guiding hand of the ever-present malicious madman, Calypso.

Throughout the war-torn years, it indeed has been Calypso, granter of wishes, who has sustained himself as one of the few constants left in a world engulfed by chaos. His pillar of power yet remains Twisted Metal, the means by which he maintains an iron grip on this disorder.

“Ah, yes, thank you mister narrator, but I believe I’ll take it from here. We don’t want to give our dear friends here the wrong impression, do we? No, that simply would not do… Now, for a proper introduction. Greetings friends, my name is Calypso, the creator of the Twisted Metal competition. As previously stated, this year will be the thirteenth running of the contest, an auspicious number indeed. I take comfort in the fact that the contest has been able to sustain itself for this long though, given its nature. As I’m sure you can imagine, there has always been at least a small number of people, whether they be law enforcement officers public or private, secret agents, assassins or vigilantes, who have tried to put an end to my contest. Back in the beginning when my power and influence was still yet fledgling, I had to resort to underhanded tricks to remain hidden, such as constantly moving my hideout (previous locales include an underground garage, my own personal blimp, and a simple junkyard) to changing the name of the contest itself (with previous incarnations known as High Octane and Urban Assault) to keep my dream alive. But those days have long since passed. Surely I know people still exist who would wish to destroy both my dream and I, but now I can crush them quite easily.

Oh my, I seem to have drifted off into an unintentional history lesson! My apologies friends, let’s get down to brass tacks, shall we?

This year’s contest is looking quite promising indeed, all things considered. Especially if you take into consideration the outcome of last year’s contest. We had one winner as we always do, but Marcus Kane, driver of Roadkill and muttering madman extraordinaire, was unable to claim his prize after defeating Tower Tooth, and I in part blame myself. I was unable to stop Needles Kane, driver of Sweet Tooth and the consummate sociopath, from intercepting poor Marcus and plucking him up for himself after his victory. For what purposes I do not know, but I don’t doubt that I will be seeing them both very soon indeed…

Now, with both Marcus and Needles seemingly out of the picture for this year’s contest,  I’m sure you’re all wondering just who will participate? Believe me, there will be some surprises in this year’s field of twelve drivers. Mr. Grimm, be a dear and fetch me the list, will you?”

Mr. Grimm gave Calypso a condescending look which would have worked better if he had eyes, but he left in silence.

Calypso merely chuckled. "Yes, Mr. Grimm works for me now. Surprised? He shouldn't be. After many years of failing to win my contest, Mr. Grimm was never able to garner enough souls to fulfill his appetite, so he came on bended knee to yours truly, just begging for some help. How could I say no to a loyal participant of my contest? He works for me now, and in return I pay him in manufactured souls. It's impossible for me to collect real ones, but he doesn't know that."

As if on cue, Grimm returned, dragging his feet a little. "Here are your files, Calypso." He stated, tossing the papers to his new master.

"Ah, excellent." Calypso grinned as he gripped the files, and slowly began leafing through them.

----

THE DRIVERS:

*WILD ROSE - driven by ROSE ADAMS.
Her first competition. All she seemingly wants is beauty.

*TWISTER - driven by MIRANDA WATTS.
Placed second in last year's tournament. Returns this year to find long lost twin Amanda.

*DARKSIDE - driven by MR. ASH.
Originally uninvited. Searches for an unknown, potentially lethal somebody or something. Keep eyes on this one.

*YELLOW JACKET - driven by CHARLIE KANE.
Resurrected. Looks to gain revenge on Outlaw for killing him, and to gain back his son.

*CRIMSON FURY - driven by AGENT SMYTHE.
British Secret agent. Colleague of Agent Stone and extremely loyal monarchist.

*HAMMERHEAD - driven by STU AND JEFF.
Two guys in a truck. Stu wants revenge on yours truly for killing his best friend Mike two years ago.

*OUTLAW - driven by CARL AND JAMIE ROBERTS.
The usual. *sigh*

*GRASSHOPPER - driven by KRISTA SPARKS.
Daughter dearest. Looks to claim her soul in order to be fully resurrected.

*SPECTRE - driven by JENNIFER CAMPBELL.
Heir to the throne. Searches for long lost father, unaware of his fate or the fact he competed here.

*PIT VIPER - driven by ANGELA FORTIN.
Her reasons for resurfacing are unknown. It can't just be for the money.

*ROADKILL - driven by CAPTAIN SPEARS.
The time trooper. Wants to gain back his memories that were wiped as a side effect of getting stuck in a time vortex.

*SHADOW - driven by RAVEN.
The underground hero. A witch from an alternate universe who is looking to augment her power.

----

"What?" Exclaimed Mr. Grimm. "Where's Axel? Where's Warthog? And Thumper and Mr. Slam? And by all means where's Sweet Tooth? And why in Satan's name am I not on there?!"

Calypso glanced an annoyed look at his inferior. "Cool your jets, son. Axel couldn't find it in his heart to participate any longer, there could not be found a suitable driver for Warthog, both drivers of Thumper have been murdered and poor Simon Whittlebone has finally been institutionalized, thank heavens. Needles Kane is away plotting something, though I'm not sure what. And trust me, you're competing."

Grimm would have rolled his eyes, if he had any. "Great. What's the point if I can't make a wish, though?"

At this claim, Calypso's mood soured. "You're getting your wish granted everyday, aren't you? Souls to satiate your everlasting hunger, and you haven't even won a competition! You've got your wish out of the goodness of my heart, and all I've got to show for it is complaining. For the Collector of Souls, you're getting soft indeed, I'd say. And I don't have a use for a whiner."

Grimm looked away, knowing he had crossed the line, and he would be good never to cross it again. "My apologies, Calypso." he said, giving a bow. "It won't happen again."

Calypso gave a haughty sniff. "Yes. See to it that it doesn't. Now if you don't mind, I have much work to do still..."

SWEET TOOTH

"Well, we really did it now, didn't we?" Folding his arms, the clown turned to look at the bearded man standing to his left, who wore an an expression of slight exasperation on his face. The two men stood before a vast lake under a slate gray sky. Despite Needles' choice of wording, it couldn't of been more clear he was placing the blame for their current predicament solely on Marcus.

"I was tired, okay?" Replied Marcus, folding his arms as well. "We've been driving for how many days straight? I don't know about you, but normal people need to sleep once in awhile in order to function properly."

"Hey, it's a two-operator vehicle." Said Needles, taking a few steps forward, letting the soft surf slide over his leather boots. "And I sure as hell didn't drive it into the lake myself."

As he spoke those words, the last remaining visible part of Tower Tooth sunk beneath the surface of the lake, leaving nothing but a rush of bubbles and a series of concentric ripples where it had disappeared. Both drivers had managed to bail out of the machine before it had hit water. "Damn. I didn't think it was that deep. Can't even begin to imagine what would happen if I had gotten my hair wet." Needles wondered aloud, chuckling his perverse laugh.

Marcus wasn't nearly as amused by the observation. Ever since he and Needles had met at the close of last year's tournament, his mind was more of a jumbled mess than it usually was. Here before him stood a man who had practically kidnapped him, drove him to the middle of nowhere, and claimed that he was him, that Needles and Marcus were one and the same. Needless to say, Marcus wasn't easily convinced. From the beginning, his mind was set only on one reality, or rather, a lack thereof: That Twisted Metal was not real, that it only existed in the head of Marcus Kane. Needles Kane, a man whom, despite sharing the same surname, was a man of different stature and mannerisms whom he had only casually known as a rival competitor during the last two competitions. They existed in two separate bodies. How could Needles claim they are the same man, Marcus wondered?

Shaking himself out of his reverie, Marcus spoke up. "Well, we're not entirely helpless...we still have Roadkill and Sweet Tooth."

Needles, pulling himself out of the treadmarks left in the sand, slumped up. "But they're all the way back in Tokyo! You expect me to walk back?"

Rubbing his beard, Marcus came up with an idea. If this world was his own reality as was his theory, then anything he imagined could come true. "Just wait. Let me try something." Closing his eyes, Marcus narrowed his focus to a single object. Concentrating on it with his entire being, he ordered the object to appear. Marcus released his breath as he opened his eyes, as he didn't realize until now that he'd been holding it. What he saw before him stunned him. Dark Tooth, shining and gleaming new and pristine, sat before the pair of them.

"Oh wow..." Exclaimed Needles, sounding sincerely impressed. "Nice work, Brain Drain." Marcus merely smiled, having surprised himself a little. Even he wasn't sure that the idea was going to work, yet the proof stood right before him as they both clambered in. 'Could this mean it's all really in my head after all?' Marcus thought.

"I hate having to haul my own ass..." Needles interrupted, starting up Dark Tooth with an enormous roar. "You just stay awake over there, you hear me?" He said added a little bit louder, to Marcus. Marcus only smiled. "Sorry."

Twisted Metal development period consisted of three years. As this games basically main focused on mutiplayer combat. So it provide lot of playing option online as at same time four players can play on split screen and sixteen players can be online with this game.

From what I've read so far it's really good. I like how I can picture a stort without many visual elements in the story. I'm working on a new fic, I have to draw almost every character over, and write up a story. I feel as though putting up some characters always sparks activity around here.
