My car drove like a dream when it was brand new. People tell me I'm lucky to have got 11 years out of it. I originally thought if you buy a brand new car and keep it new, it'll stay new. Not at all, especially in NY where they use liquid salt. Out of the 11 years it was reliable for 9 (if I was to add up the time it spent sitting in between repairs it would be about 2 years) Now it's sitting in the driveway with a blown motor. Needs new crankshaft and bearings, and that's a crapshoot so I'm better off replacing the entire engine, but the rust on the bottom frame towards the front is much more extensive than I thought. I had done some bodywork and saved the back, but I was lazy with the front and thought I'd get to it later. Yeah, 2 years later and it's too late now.

I will never do another car loan. I will never buy another new car. Also known as the worst investment of your life. Today's cars though? Forget about it. More over-priced than ever, and break down and fall apart faster than ever. And made so the home mechanic cannot work on them. You have to be a sucker and pay Mr. mechanic $1,000 for what use to be a simple job, lulz. Never a new car unless it's a Telsa. I'd be willing to learn about those vehicles. But mechanically inclined or not they have to be stupendously expensive to fix, but all you have to do for fuel is run an extension cord out to it. Should really have a garage for that kind of vehicle. Most are flat out ugly or too mainstream. Only one looks decent, but too sporty.

I've been getting around with my bosses' truck. He's not missing it, he has a few anyway. Of course now I'm taking care of it, but I picked up a 98 Cavalier for $500. Runs great with no leaks or rust (came from Mass.) only thing is it needs new clutch, slave cylinder, and exhaust flex pipe. The guy even had all the new parts in the front seat, just no time or motivation to fix it. He was a mechanic himself with a garage at home and everything. I liked that he was a mechanic and knew his car's history inside and out. Other cavaliers in the same price range all needed work, except those owners didn't know elbow from ass, and couldn't tell me what was up with the car. And of course people that don't have titles and try to sell you a good car for dirt cheap.

Applying for a lost title is a bitch too and the vehicle might end up with some red flags so I tend to stay away from cars with no titles.

Honestly as far as the Impala goes I'm surprised it hasn't fallen apart in the year my girlfriend has drove it, considering she thinks she's a formula one driver.

I don't like new cars either to be honest, because like you said, home mechanics are being phased out with all the electronic components. You open the hood of any older car you can see what you are working with. I opened the hood of a new car and literally had a "What the fuck is that?" moment.

The cavalier is really turning out to be a bust. I got everything apart with transmission separated and engine supported. I can flip the transmission almost upside down and in circles but I can't get it to drop down at all. It's caught on the subframe by an inch in 2 spots. I finally determined the subframe had to come out, which wasn't an absolute terrible thing because I had previously discovered it rusted and rotted out completely where the sway bar and bushings connect. It either had to be replaced or welded.

Ok so I started on removing the subrame: brakes/calipers, rotors, tie rod ends, rack and pinion bolts. Then the 6-7 sub frame bolts. All came loose except the 2 on the outsides. Outer left and right bolts that run along the bottom rocker panel frame area which is also rusted out. Probably because the rain runoff was designed to run along the backside of it. It was covered up by the side skirts that were basically floating. Well the head on the left side broke off and something on the inside broke off on the right. I just don't have the blow torches and grinders for that. Besides, then you're left with a hole that you have to weld and tap and jesus lord just stop. On top of that it needs new tie rod ends and a boot for the cv axel because I tore the one on the left side from being impatient with it. Needs new filler neck, current one is in the early/middle stages of rusting and splitting and I can almost guarantee if you drop the gas tank you'll find rust, dirt, and water in there since the same thing happened on my 2000 grand am. I mistaked it for fuel pump goin bad every 2 years, for several years. Nope, it was the rotting gas tank filler neck that is 100% exposed to the elements and everything that comes off the back tire. Needs exhaust flex pipe. Fortunately the guy bought a new one and left it in the back seat. But this is also a sizable job since the exhaust manifold has to come off and the only way to connect the new flex pipe is by welding.

The car does have some +'s. Good engine, manual trans, power windows, cd player/6-speaker sound, good brakes/calipers/rotors, good tires/nice rims. At this point I'm thinking swap the motor with the grand am since the only thing wrong with that car is the blown motor (needs crankshaft, valve seals, possible rocker arms? I don't know much the internal of engines yet) trial by fire. If I get a cherry picker and lift it out that would make it much easier to work with I imagine. While swapping the engines. I could sell the cavalier for $1,000 with new clutch and rebuilt motor. The car could go for possibly years without issues. Eventually all that pressure on the sway bar will snap it though. Then it's $500 for new sway bar and $500 for new subframe. The car is so rotted out though. Nothing major and certainly within the realm of fixable, but I haven't even mentioned the trunk latch. The worst I ever seen. Not sure how it's even staying closed. I mean it looks like it already rusted off, then someone screwed the free-floating rusting chunk back on through the body. I did notice that before buying but it was easy to overlook because everything was looking good. All lights work. You could even drive it to the store but shifting was like seriously grinding and smashing through gears.

Looks like a transformer. I like how the spoiler lifts up and out of the back

They can't decide if it's going to be a supra or a FT1 now and changed the design to more of a exotic. Toyota likes teasing me like that. It makes me sad.

This looks more like a supra successor to me:

1994 Mitsubishi 3000gt
...
...won't believe the deal I got for this. $3,000. 88,000 miles. Standard. Flawless condition. The guy was retiring and moving to Florida. Sold his house and everything. He said if he couldn't sell the car by August he was giving it to a nephew, which he really didn't want to do. He's had it up on Craigslist all summer and no one even called or came to look at it. One and only owner. Always had it serviced at the dealership he got it from.

This whole mission to get this car started with seeing this one in a field not far from where I use to live. That and the GM's are looking increasingly hopeless.
...
I went by there for the first time in 2 years and there it was. It's been there around 8 years. I figured the guy would cut me a deal being as the poor condition it was in. But he didn't. I got ahold of him and he wanted $3,500. It's also an automatic with 110,000 miles. Looks like it's going to sit there another 8 years
...

I'm getting to be on the fence with what to do with these. As it is I stand to lose both time and money continuing work on them. The cavalier is almost certainly getting scrapped at this point. I'm not going to keep it around until I learn how to weld or something. Everything would have gone just fine if it wasn't so rusted out. It's funny, the white 3000gt was sitting in that field for 8 years and had less rust on it. Probably because the under carriages come undercoated and sealed from the factory. If I do scrap it I'll take the body kit off and try to sell it on eBay.
...

Before I scrap the Cavalier I still really want to pull the motor and drop it in the grand am. I gave myself a limit until the fall. If they're both still sitting in the side yard they're both getting scrapped. Maybe I'll get an xbox with the cash.

Nice find man. I've always liked the 3000's. Junk the others or strip them for parts. There's money to be found in every junker.

Thanks man, and yeah the scrapyard only gives $150 each for these cars. We both know they part it out and make well over $2,000. Someone in need or want of a body kit would be happy to pay $400. The good engine alone is $500. I'm taking a break for now and focusing attention on other things, but I will definitely try to do the engine swap and save the white car.

I've always wanted a 3000 or a Nissan 300. What I really wanted (and I've never told anyone this, because if they got the car I would have to kill them) was a 300. It's more discreet and only certain people would know what it is. But that car is even more expensive, and rare. Honestly though I don't care much anymore because this turned out so well.

Since skywalker is posting about working on his vehicles I figured I'd join in.

I haven't been treating her right, since she was left with other people for a few months, but now I'm working on her to get her into premium shape. I plan on taking a couple day ride and if I do I need her to be in tip top shape.

...

Chain took forever to remove the rust, but it was worth it. Never throw out parts that can be reused. The other chain is a spare in case the old one snaps.

...

6 hours in I'm still removing rust from every nook and cranny. I'm debating on repainting most of the parts and the bike to help stave off rust, but I don't know yet.

It's lunch time.

300ZX's aren't necessarily rare. I mean, I don't see them on the road too often (though I do see them) but there's usually a number of them on Craigslist. The problem with them is that they can require a ton of maintenance, so one you pick up for cheap is probably going to be garbage unless you have the money to dump into it. And one in really nice condition will cost a pretty penny. Personally I love the 300ZX's, they're my favorite Z after the S30, but they can get expensive.

As for your Cavalier, unfortunately for you the Cavalier guy seems to have dropped off the face of the earth, otherwise he'd probably be able to help you with your issue. If you ask me, your biggest issue was buying an American car in the first place but whatever.

Let's be real, if you don't think Japanese cars are the tightest shit then get the fuck out of my face.

Eight years ago, I had decided that I wanted a Japanese sportscar from the early 90's. It would have to be a 3000GT, a 300ZX, a Supra, a RX7 or a Skyline. I bought a Z32 300ZX because they were most available at the time. I have put a lot of work and money in it and have hated and loved the car throughout the years. I will own this car untill I wreck it.

Below are some pictures from my holiday to Norway in 2012.

A buddy of mine had an 86' 300ZX, but he was living somewhere he couldn't have cars that didn't run. He crushed it for $300. He bought an '87 MR2 recently though. It has a head that needs to be reworked.
