Hey guys! Big Twisted Metal fan right here, just discovered this site. I've been chatting on the official Playstation Forums Twisted Metal board, but it seems like most the fans are here. Looking forward to getting to know you guys.
Anyways, I posted this over at
the other forum and decided I'd post it here too. You guys probably already saw it, but I didn't see a topic for it so forgive me if this is a repeat thread.
David Jaffe held
his own little press conference at the very end of E3 2010 to give a more in-depth look at the new faction-based gamemode "Nuke". As a warning, it is 25 minutes long.
There's a bit of controversy behind this since faction base gameplay has never been apart of Twisted Metal before, but after watching this in-depth look the gamemode looks very fun and a welcome addition to the Twisted Metal gameplay.
Key Notes
•Each team has their own faction leader mounted on a stationary turret.
•Your goal is to defend your faction leader while attempting to capture the enemy faction leader.
•Once you captured the enemy faction leader, he is dragged behind your car as you must take him to your missile launcher.
•
Each team has their own stationary missile launcher, but there are also moving missile launchers that either team can use.
•The host has the ability to dictate if there will be only stationary launchers, only moving, or both.
•To sacrifice the faction leader you must hold him in the perimeter of the missile launcher for a long enough time.
•
When holding the faction leader in the perimeter you lose your ability to attack, so teamwork is key.
•Different cars have different speeds as to how fast the missile launcher loads up.
•Once the faction leader has been sacrificed, you must manually control a missile and aim it into the giant statue of the faction leader in the air.
•
In some levels the statues are stationary and in others they are moving.
•The missiles can be intercepted and destroyed by players on the opposing team.
•
The Talon (helicopter) can capture the enemy, but if it does an artificial ceiling is imposed forcing it to fly low to the groud. And since the Talon has the weakest armor next to the motorcycle, it's not a very smart decision.
•If you die while dragging the faction leader (s)he'll respawn back in the stationary turret, sort of like CTF.
General Notes (Not specific to Nuke)
•Each vehicle has a special ability and an alt fire that differentiates it from the others, as well has different handling, boost, and armor.
•The Talon is a helicopter. It has a magnet that can pick up both teammates and enemies.
•
If caught by the Talon's magnet, you can press a button to be released (teammate) or try to shake out of it (enemy).
•The Roadboat is a standard car. It's has a magnet that can either attract cars or repulse cars.
•With attraction part of the magnet, you can get an enemy stuck on your front bumper and then ram him into a wall, or use Sixaxis for triple damage.
•With repulsion part of the magnet you can send enemies flying away. Great in combination with the attraction. Get an enemy stuck on your bumper, then send him flying across the map.
•The alt fire of the magnet sends it spinning and becomes a projectile that ricochets off the walls.
•Meatwagon is an ambulance that can shoot out a patient on a stretcher rigged with TNT. This can either be shot in a straight path or towards a locked on enemy or manually controlled for a potential direct hit which yields quadruple damage.
•The Vermin is a van that can fire a mouse rocket that flies in a straight path or towards a locked on enemy or manually controlled. Since this missile uses flight, it's great to counter the missile in Nuke.
•Junkyard Dog is a tow-truck that spawns taxis that it can project like missiles. It's alt is to spawn health pick-ups which it can drop for teammates.
•The tow-trucks health packs can either be 30% of 100%. But if you use the 100% you must wait longer for your special ability bar to regenerate.
•Reaper is a motorcycle that has a chainsaw that you can throw at your enemies. If you pop a wheelie with the chainsaw, it drags against the ground and builds up friction and becomes a flaming chainsaw which yields triple damage.
•Sweet Tooth's ice cream truck which tranforms into a mech is also available for all factions.
•Death Warrant is another standard car that has a passenger with a machine gun which can fire forwards or backwards. If you charge it up he fires missiles, a little risk vs. rewards factor.
•One of the pick-up weapons for all vehicles is a mine. The mine cooks, so the longer it is left the alone the more damage it does when activated.
•Another weapon is the sniper rifle. The sniper uses a lock-on system. The more time you focus on a vehicle the more precise your shot is, eventually yielding a headshot.
•
By no means are these the only vehicles and pick-up weapons to be included in the game.
•
The tone won't be like Black, but also won't be like TM1 and TM2. The story will still be very twisted, so somewhere in between the two tones. The reason is because they are aiming for a T rating.
•There will be a single player story, a co-op story, and online multiplayer, but there have been no plans to include multiplayer bots for offline practice. But you can still play multiplayer offline with 4 splayer split-screen.
•There is also online split-screen, but it slims down to 2 players. So it's you and your buddy on the couch and up to 14 others online.
•
The main limitation for the graphics is the RAM. The maps are so large and the vehicles move so fast that alot of the map is streaming to your screen very quickly. He compared this to God of War III that has impressive graphics but they are capable of that since Kratos moves relatively slower then the cars, so less of the level is being streamed onto your screen at once. Graphics will improve by launch though.
•They are creating the split-screen vibe and mentality online by giving each vehicle alot of hit points. By doing this players will engage in online relationships such as car chases where the tide can turn on who is going to go BOOM! and who isn't. He compared this to shooters like COD where it's step out of a bunker and get shot and die very quickly, where there's not enough time to really get that vibe.
•
There will be alot of levels, and then each of those levels will have alot of variations. The way he described it made me think of the way the levels in Warhawk work.
•There will be ranks and rewards for ranking up, but he said it won't be like COD where your rewards totally screw up the balance.
•Games are 1v1 up to 8v8 depending how the host sets it up.
