As much as I hate twitter, I see that Jaffe is using it alot more than his blogs or the esp boards.

check it out:

"For the new Twisted Metal: Let the player unlock cars as they rank up- assuming we support ranking up- OR make all cars available@the start?"

"No, all the cars are balanced like in other TM games. New functionality would open up- flight, for ex- if we saved copter till level 10"

"Like in previous TM's, every car is attempted to be balanced. But every car functions different (special weapon mainly)for example but a car you get at level 1 would be balanced against a car at level 10."

" 'not be about gaining play advantage' i mean Smiley Yeah if we give cars away with rank it would not be able gaining play advantage, but more about opening new play styles AND offering carrot."

"I'm tired of unlocking anyway. JAFFE: U know, I gotta say, there's a part of me that agrees. I'm torn between trying to 'follow the online shooter herd' of perks and unlocks and ranking and saying 'fuck it' and doing it the way I want which has NONE of that shit (which I personally find annoying and would rather see the team focus on balance and level design and weapon design)."

"But part of our job is to try to read the market's wants while ALSO staying true to our vision. Tricky balance Smiley"

I'm sure the unlocking shit works for the masses, but I hate that shit.  I want a focus on gameplay balance for cars and maps you get from day 1.

I'm fine with the whole achievement thing as a way of saying "hey I fucking rule at this game" but I really don't want any kind of content to be based off it.

This is fairly good news. I would rather have everything unlocked from the beginning but at least this makes it seem like Kotaku was wrong when they said there will be perks. At least you aren't unlocking better shit, just more shit to play with. I'm fine with this I guess.

This is great news!

in fact it would make sense for higher level cars to actually be a little more difficult to master than lower level vehicles.

e.g. your lvl 10 Talon is deadly as hell but tricky to control + special needs a lot of skill.

lvl 1 Roadboat or whatever has a very easy to use special but is not to powerful overall.

(this has been a staple of all TM cars in the past)
I found very few to be actually totally underpowered.

I mentioned some time ago that instead of upgrade perks have the achievements you've attained shown on your vehicle as badges, better skins or little custom upgrades like hood ornaments, better wheel trims etc. Just stuff that makes your car look better cos you earned it...

I'd even like to see more armor on cars- just stuff that makes them look meaner but at the same time not changing the stat value one bit.

I'm so pleased to hear that Jaffe and crew are on the same page as most of us.

I'm hoping to get 1v1's in every now and then. Looking at the levels that have been shown, it'd be like playing in Subburbs or Prison.

Large levels like that were not very good for 1v1's. I'm wondering if they will have medium to small levels? I completely forgot to ask about that. I don't reacll seeing any level that was small like Stadium, or medium like Plant.

I belive they have Mag.
I read (heard?) from Jaffe in a tweet or interview that the levels would be adjustable- I can't remember the actual term he used but it instanly made me think of the different size version of TMB levels.

Maybe with 16 players people will actually play the large maps.

There was just way too much open space and it slowed the action down a ton.

new tweet from mr Jaffe

Not trying to sell anyone on anything or change anyone's minds, just observing my reaction: so it seems there are LOTS of peps who want leveling up and unlocking for the new Twisted Metal. Fair enough. We may do this (still deciding aspects of that system). BUT for me I find it very interesting that key reasons people bring up for wanting it are things like 'so I don't get bored', 'pushes me to keep playing beyond the first month', 'I like to collect things', etc. It's almost like the game equivalent of preservatives for food, designed to keep the game from going bad after just a few weeks. But just like food, it doesn't seem to matter if these preserving agents fuck up the core product or takes something away from the core product (in the case of food, the valuable nutrients inherent to the basic food before all the chemicals go in are sometimes removed/reduced; in the case of games the fun inherent in the core design can get diluted and/or reduced as a player is taking his mind off the core game and staying focused on the meta goal of acquiring rank and goodies and such). To me it seems like they are saying, "I like chess but it's be better if I could rank up and earn new pieces'. That may be the case but to me it dilutes the fun of trying to outthink your opponent and stay 2-5 steps ahead because you now have this higher/meta goal that can take your focus from the core experience. I get 100% why people love it and I get how it's good business in many ways to include it. Just trying to decide if it ends up hurting the core game at a fundamental level. Wow- long tweet! :)

God damn Jaffe. You know what needs to be done. Don't cave to these assholes who want shallow MW2 online progression and are just going to abandon the game 1 month after it comes out and they've already unlocked everything and gotten all the trophies so they move on.

Just give us unlockable skins, and stuff.  If you reach level 8 you can make all your fire missiles looks like napalm ice cream cones.  Reach level ten with a car and you unlock their TM1 or TM2 skin.  Level five, your Sweet Tooth now plays the ice cream jingle from TMB whenever you kill someone, or your Specter cries out "I'm Scott Cambell Bitches!."  That'll keep me playing and keep the game balanced.

I think what most people like about unlocking stuff is the customization it enables the player.  They see the vets running (or driving in this case) around with Rachet and Clank backpacks, with skins of in game characters like scientists, funny stuff, cool stuff, stuff that makes you different.  It's Twisted Metal, lets make things twisted with the customization options.

YES! YES! YES! things like this is the thing i like best about leveling-up.

Also idk if it would work with TM but maybe choose like wether you get napalms or fire missles, speed missles oe watevr, etc. Huh

Ehh idk it prbly wouldnt work.

EDIT: what i meant in the 2nd part was choose your weapons

I think it's awful when a game gives people upgraded shit for playing the game more. If anything should be unlockable, it should be things that don't particularly matter. Like the things Surgeon said. Or, dare I say, alternate costumes? I love it when any games feature that , for some reason Grin

i could kinda see this happening but it would only work in single palyer) if they keep it where u play as who u choose) since they have the clowns, dolls, etc. now
