what level of customization do you want?

Lets say TMPS3 has a customize your car option, what sort of, if any,level of customization do you want? I'd personally like it if for online they had some sort of customization feture, so if you had  the same "clan tag" you and your buddys could all have the same colored car, or slogan like TMA or somthing written on the hood or sides.

I think a level editor would be great. the charactor maker would be really kind of cheap online as you could have a missle that homes and go's through walls like specturd but with the damage of mr.grimms scyth and the speed of mr.grimm and the armour of minion

not if th custimization was purely visual,and having online play almost demands as much,i do like the idea of a clan insignia and colors.as for full custom characters having a point system in the upgrade catagory would limit how powerful your car could ultimately become,making the most effective parts/weapons cost more,but you would have to have a point cap/level up type thing going on

you'd have a set amount of points to work with... say 20. with 4 catagories (speed, armor, handling, special strength), you'd have 5 points per catagory if you wanted a well-rounded car. or you could divide them up amongst everything else.. like 6 speed, 6 special, 4 handling, 4 armor.. etc.

I def like the idea of a custom clan/team logo or something like that.. maybe a team of all red cars with a black skull on the hood or something like that

I think custom skins and insignia will be mandatory

Every online game does that now and it would be stupid not to have this in place.

I'm still not sold on the idea of tweaking stats or possible upgrades.
I have a feeling thats where the game is going (and I know I'll fall in love with it anyway).

I just feel that if I'm a good player and I get rewards like slightly better armour or maybe a machine gun upgrade its going to make me rule, and while thats great to me the noobs are going to get turned off pretty quickly if I keep pwning them.

Although the game should have different ladders and servers so the higher level players stay together, lower levels ditto etc...

I'm sorry and I realise I've went off topic of what you were asking but to me this is the extreme possibilities of customising.

EDIT: to TDC: I could enjoy that idea as long as it isn't open to abuse.
Imagine if some cars were way powerful with their special boosted, it would need tons of testing and balancing.

I spose thats why the devs can patch stuff now though.

See, Napalm gets what I like, just a simple color swap or addd a decal. Now toward the points thing, thats a good idea.
So maybe when you kill someone the points could count towards "ranking up" and customizing the vehicle. I for one would like it if you added armor, you could see it visually (cop car straped to a semi or sheet metal welded to the windows?),or if you added more speed when the hood was up you could see an add-on(super charger, fuel injection etc...)
Just a few badly orginized thoughts.

@ Arch

I dont think it'd be too hard to balance really. I mean, yea.. you're gonna have dumbasses who max out their specials thinking it'll make them King Shit cause they have the most powerful special in the game, not realizing they neglected their speed, armor and handling. so essentially, what they have is a big, slow brick with no protection. all the firepower wont help you if 3 fire missiles can destroy you from full health

when I talk about this kinda customization and leveling, think Marvel Ultimate Alliance or X-Men Legends...

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the idea of tweaking stats either, but then again lots of idea either sound good or don't sound good in theory or on paper so I might actually love that idea. Other games have done that and I like it, but when it comes to TM I guess I'm just short sighted sometimes because I've only even known TM to be one way so I have a hard time thinking outside the box on certain issues. This is also due to the fact that the last TM online game was from 2002 and that was when online console gaming was in its infancy, so a lot of things have changed since then and there is a lot that is considered "standard" these days.

But back to the topic at hand, I know TM will probably not have anything like this and its not really important, but the customization feature in Forza 3 is astounding. What you can do to your car from just a visual standpoint in that game is amazing. There are even some people in the Forza community that were hired to work for the company that made it simply based on what they could do artistically to their rides in Forza. You can get pretty detailed and elaborate with it to the point that its almost like a virtual car painting simulator. Some people play the game purely for that alone.

Here is an example of what I'm talking about. And yes, these are all custom paint jobs done in game by very talented people. These were not done by devs or anything.

"Although the game should have different ladders and servers so the higher level players stay together, lower levels ditto etc..."

Well, you are very insightful there buddy. A little bird told me this is how he wants the game to be and it will probably end up this way. Wink

Midnight club LA had a that too, though I don't think our vehicles are gonna be nice in TM.  Wink

I'd be okay with either of these different upgrade methods...
(I had a good third one too, but I can't fucking remember it! It's going to drive me nuts!)

One could be to offer an extended list of different calibers of firepower, shielding options, maybe even ammo capacity - I try to think of DiabloII - where you sort of have to take your character down a path and stick to it. Different options are removed once you select another of a certain caliber.

The other would be the point system TDC mentioned, which was the first thing I thought of. But instead of just the 4 options (speed, armor, handling, special) I'd want to throw in a bunch more, with a very limited point allowance that really make you think wisely. With this, I think Fallout3, where I can never choose what the best choice would be, but I have to stick with it when I think I do.

I'd also want a cap on that. I hate the idea of someone leveling up til theyre maxed completely on all stats. After that, what's the point?

Other things you could do at the same time would be to add perks (think CoD) with things such as extra turbo, or maybe weapon stealing. Or something like unique weapons, where you can choose and customize a weapon, or select from a list of preset weapons and possibly get it to go up in efficiency as you level up.

Just some ideas...

when i say cap im talkin about a nice gap between starting off and capping off , i wanna spend a good 10-20 hrs building up my ride , with a nice amount of points to spend , as long as there is a cap. armored core 4 & for answer had it perfect imo with the tuning point system , if you dont  know what im talking about go to gamestop and get yourself a $10 piece of enlightenment

I think there would be a cap on all vehicles anyway.

It would be silly if you could be Darkside but you could level it up so its the same speed as a maxed out Spectre.

A maxed out DS would never be faster than a maxed out Spectre so in theory once evry player has their whole garage up to top spec then the balance will sort of level out I think.

I know I'm sort of disagreeing with my own last reply here but it's the best way i can understand it.

On another tangent

I want to ask you guys one thing though:

How many of you are hardcore (and I mean real hardcore) customizers on Forza 3??

if you are like that then great as I can see that TM would have a serious fanbase who want to mess about with paintwork, trims, bodykits etc.

Its just that nearly everyone I talk to who like TM (as in they've heard of it) aren't bothered about deep custom stuff like in the Forza games.

I just think the majority who dig games like Forza and really get into this custom stuff (my bro does) probably wouldn't take a game like TM serious enough to start tweaking rides in this sort of depth.

Look, I might be wrong cos I'm only going by Brits, and I'll be honest and say I know NOT ONE SINGLE UK fan of TM personally any more.

But the Forza guys I've talked to basically laughed at me when I mentioned proper custom options in a game with cars and guns.

Level editor

Would work like the THPS series could work.. or Halo 3's sandbox.. Unpacking and dropping a library of meshes available from the game's library.
There could be set backdrops.. simple themes..
* Factory
* Neighborhood
* Hills
* Snowy Hills
etc etc

Car/Character Maker

Sadly I have to mention TM4..  Embarrassed you have to admit.. 'THEY TRIED'  Undecided

Simply.. I wouldn't mind taking some of those elements and advancing it.

In order-

1. Small, Medium, Large.. or light, medium, heavy..
This leads into types that size and weight..
Monster Truck, Postal Truck, Semi, Sports Car, etc. etc. maybe add some modern looking and old cars.. etc. wacky stuff that also can be unlocked from story mode.. or playing.

2. Next up is advanced look customization..
Change the color, add decals, add props. (Has a limited bar)

3. Next is the basics.. Speed, Handling, Special..
Selecting the speed is first.. which then leads to a selecting the handling.. and then finally.. the special and this is last because we all know speed and control effect the special.. so selecting them first will filter the specials.

4. Advance Special Customization- Color, sound, speed, damage.. all is customizable BUT again filitered from previous choices.

5. Final Section.. Character/driver profile.. etc.
Webcam/harddrive photo upload..  Grin
Might be possible to have a custom text ending like TM1.

SAVE AND PLAY!!    Cheesy
