Frost isn't that far off from most of the stuff I listen to. If you like that I'm sure I could find something in my collection you could get into. You seem more into the keyboard "synth" side of the music than they rocking guitars. Speaking of Final Fantasy battle music I finally found the FF battle victory music to use as a ringtone. Oh yes, now every time I get a call it feels like WIN!

I could have sent you any Final Fantasy shit you might have wanted and could have cut it into a short ringtone a long time ago!

With Frost, I really like their chord progressions and harmonies. Yea, they have some keyboards in there, but they're a sum of their parts. If you know of others that are similar I would be willing to check them out. I've loved Rammstein for a long time as well, but they have a keyboardist doing stuff too, lol. I totally don't like their new album though.

I used to be huge on Trance for years, but lost interest. It hasn't gone anywhere for years. It's the same shit over and over again. I like DnB as well, but I'm really picky. Drums don't cut it for me. I need a track to take me somewhere; to tell a story. Dirty bass riffs and noises don't cut it. I think I prefer Jungle more actually.

These days I just look for new talent that I haven't heard of. I use Last.fm a lot to see what's similar. I would love to use Pandora, but it's closed to anyone outside of the U.S.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of the black metal scene, especially one of my fav. bands Children of Bodom.  Some Dimmu Borgir here and there, with a bunch of others.  Also, can't go wrong with Rammstein, especially seeing as how the license plate on my car is DuHast haha.

In the spring and summer I'm pretty much exclusive to the techno, vocal trance and club mixes.

wow, thats dedication. I've loved Rammstein since I first saw Lost Highway and heard them on the OST (tracks, "Rammstein" and "Hierate Mich"). I havent heard anything new.. the last song I caught was either 'Links 2, 3, 4' or 'Freur Frei'.. I wanna catch them live, but I dont see that happening

"Drums don't cut it for me. I need a track to take me somewhere; to tell a story."

I'm not sure if you meant for those two sentences to go together, but I find it hard to believe someone could prefer computer programs and synth or "fake" beats to real drums, real talent, and real musicianship. But hey. To each his own. Not to get into a heavy discussion about it because I fought the good fight for music for years and I'm done doing it. I've made no attempts to hide over the years that I don't consider techno or anything of that type actual music because nothing compares to listening to a real good drummer who belays passion and emotion to their beats in my opinion.

If you are talking about a drummer telling a story, pretty much all the drummers I listen to are dynamic enough to "tell a story" so to speak. Pretty much all the music, musicians, and drummers I listen to tell a story with just the music itself. That's a stipulation for me. I get bored to death of simple music that has the same structure, format, and beats the whole time. I want to get lost in the complexities of it all.

If you like the Frost for their harmonies and progressions I have lots of melodic medal so to speak. I'll look through some stuff if I stop being lazy.

I know you probably don't respect what I do with music or what I listen to and since you're a drummer (and alpha about everything), I can respect your opinion. What I was saying was when I listen to music I want to experience something. I don't feel anything when I listen to drums or guitar, just as you don't feel anything for my "simple" music.

I'm not just talking instruments either. It's the difference between someone enjoying country and another liking hip hop. Electronic music speaks to me. I "get" it. I embrace it. I don't know why, it just does. A complex drum pattern is impressive when played, but I don't feel it. Play me a standard 4/4 beat with a hard bassline and synths and I'll get out of my seat to dance.

I would like to disagree with your real talent and musicianship comment. Yes, I write music using computers. I write/program the drums, basslines, synth pads, leads, sfx etc etc. I arrange the entire song, mix it and master it. I know how to write a song and I understand and know musical theory. I fit under the category of a music producer. According to your definition, however, I'm neither a musician nor do I have talent. I don't understand this. Music comes in many forms and so do musicians. I can play instruments, but have chosen to write music digitally.

I'm not looking to get in a pissing contest, but what you said was extremely elitist and it felt like I was being look down upon.

I gotta agree here, and to field the comments thoroughly, I am an 'acoustic' musician, meaning I dont use any kind of technology to play an instrument for me (other than mics). but I do respect dj's and techno artists just the same for the simple fact that I know how complex making it can be. when I had my band, we had a friend of ours who did gabber-core (Aphex Twin, Goldie, etc.) temp on bass while our bassist was on probation (and curfew). when we got our bassist back, we decided to have the temp stay and do turntable/effects for us. so on top of our already heavy sound, we also had a hard techno sounds on top of it. I'm a fan of most genres out there, and have first-hand knowledge of how complex techno really is

Yeah, my bad. It's just an attitude I've had for years and its not directed at you specifically and while I will apologize for being a douche, I won't take back anything I said. I don't mean to insult you or your music cause its wrong for me to think I'm somehow better than you as a musician just because I can actually play multiple instruments. You know I respect the hell out of you, but that's just how a feel.

Sitting around composing stuff on a computer takes all the passion and emotion out of the process of creating music in my opinion though. Programming things isn't as fun to me personally, as actually "making" that music with an instrument as I've done both so I'm not just looking down on your music because I'm ignorant. Making beats on a synth, keyboard, or comp is nothing compared to getting a group of people together with instruments and finding that magic together as rhythms, beats, chords, all come together in sync. It is something that can't be described when you're jamming with a group and you find a really good groove or riff and just go with it and get lost in the moment; feeling the music you are using your own body to make flow through your body.

I just think those "techno" types of music don't push music forward and only hold it back. It just encourages people to be lazy and have computers and technology do all the work for them instead of taking the time to learn to play instruments. This is part of the problem with things like shitty rap music dominating the air waves now. But alas, this is the age we live in. People let technology do everything for them, and while technology has greatly enhanced music and continues to, at the same time it allows anyone these days to be a "musician".

And I like complex music playing on instruments because it not only challenges me as a musician to play it, but it also challenges my mind to understand it. The same 4/4 beat droning on and on puts me to sleep, and techno music, just to simply the term as I don't know what you crazy cats are calling your computer music these days, is the epitome of simplistic music and beats. The overly overly overly used boom ti, boom ti, boom ti beat should be banned from music all together. I'm not saying you or everyone in that genre does that, and I'm not oblivious to the fact that their are tons upon tons of cookie cutter shitty rock and metal bands, but it is a problem with those types of music...no thought, no passion. Hell, if you can find me something in the "electronica" genre that will change my mind I will gladly listen to it. I mean, I like the synth-y, electronic type sounds, especially when used to compliment that metal sound of guitars, bass, and drums, but usually only when played on a keyboard.

God damn, I say every time these things come up that I won't get on this kick but I find it almost irresistible. I have no right to criticize anyone elses opinions or music because it makes me look like an asshole, I am completely aware of that, but I'm sorry I just can't help but defend my standpoint on it all. You should have never said drums don't do anything for you, lol.

It's alright man. I agree with the "magic" of jamming together. When I used to play for the school band, there was something there that I've never been able to rediscover. Each person plays their part and you just feel connected. None of my friends are musicians, so I've never had that opportunity outside of school. Writing music digitally has allowed me to overcome having to need other people. I would love to collaborate with someone, but I've never found anyone as serious and open about it as I am. It sucks and I'm stuck in my ways. I get a lot of enjoyment putting a song together and isn't that what matters?

Anyway, don't worry. Everyone is passionate about something. I've had this fight with people a million times AND with people who have no ground to base their arguments on.

when my band split, me and the dj collaborated with a friend of ours who played guitar and did a few songs that were prodominantly gabber with the guitar laid on top with my vocals. it was fun, but all went our own ways. I'd love to work with some techno again

I'm the odd man out here in this convo.  I have no desire to play any instruments, and when I'm hanging out with friends and they decide to whip out the guitars and start playing, I'd just rather not be there... I find it very boring to watch people play instruments.  I love going to concerts, but just being around a bunch of people in a basement or something with no equipment other than a few acoustic guitars and MAYBE a drum set is just not my thing.  I love listening to music and I love how certain types of music can fit certain situations and make people's moods change, I also respect the talent that musicians have of all types, just can't stand when people have other friends over and decide to try to be a rockstar.

oh and p.s. - I can't stand music games either, Rock Band, Guitar Hero, DJ Hero, etc... you couldn't get me to play any of those games for even a second.
