Twisted Metal Small Brawl question.
01/11/10 at 18:10:10

Hello everyone, I have an unusual question but maybe I'm looking too hard into it. Does anyone know if Warthog's special has any special properties? It's just that practically every character has some sort of quirk to their moves. Here's a list I've made and tell me if you agree or disagree.

Crimson Fury = Longest range special and you can send it even further with a bit of turbo. This technique applies to virtually all specials.

Shadow = Can detonate. Has slight homing abilities. Direct contact bounces the enemy up and the damage is stronger compared to getting hit by the blast radius.

Mr. Grimm = A bit stronger than a power missile, need to hit with both pumpkins.

Spectre = Best homing but weakest special in the game.

Twister = Hits multiple enemies. Damage is twice as strong if you don't pick anyone up with the startup of the special (very subtle).

Warthog = Decent homing. Anything more?

Slam = You can hold the special before following through with it. You can and should use machine gun during the special. If you miss it creates a shockwave. 5 shockwaves is the equivalent to one grab.

Hammerhead = Gain super armour and speed. Weak unless you drop mines while on top. Can be VERY powerful.

Thumper = If you freeze someone, move up close and use it as they jump it can hit for better damage. One hit kills to the cpu some times!

Sweet Tooth = Can hit and kill yourself with it if you're not careful.

Outlaw = Keep tapping L2 to drain health. Does not break people out of freeze surprisingly.

Darkside = Super speed and armour. You can hit up to 4 times with just one special if you're careful. One of the most powerful specials in the game.

Mime = Get any special close by.

Axel = Between fire and homing for the first missile. Subsequent missiles have great homing ability. Hardly miss.

Trapper = 1 hit = 2 = 4 = 6. If the monkeys hit any walls or vehicles they split. If you throw this weapon into a wall the monkeys will track you and split once they hit you.

Piecemeal = Outlaw Hammerhead Darkside specials in inventory and other specials nearby.

I really enjoy using all of the vehicles but can't shake the feeling that there may be a better way to use Warthog's special ._.'

Please watch how strong Thumper's special really is at 0:52.

I'll admit, I learned a thing or two from this post. Good job.

As far as I know about Warthog, he's probably the worst car in the game. Weak special, weak armour, and I believe he's slightly fast, but that's all he has going for him.

His special was fairly similar in TM2, where all you had was three missiles that did Ok to decent damage. At least TM2 Warthod had heavy armour to make up for his lack of a good special.

The way it was used in the PSX version, was that, the further away you shot the missiles from, the more damage they would do once they made contact with an enemy vehicle. You can possibly try that, since TMSB implemented a lot of aspects from TM2.

Hyeah, I gave that distance thing a go but no luck. It just seems to be a weak special ._.' It's hard for all of the missiles to hit too. Point blank and long range don't seem to have any difference. You can shoot a freeze missile with it to look like Minion's old special though ;p Shucks, wish they didn't make Warthog so sucky. Maybe it really is just a cruddy special.

I never use this car in Small Brawl He's the only car I've never liked as the special seems so vanilla.

I still think Warthog should really have been an SB version of Grasshopper.

Character (and vehicle) would have fit better imo.

And when I first saw that car in previews I thought straightaway of GH not warthog.

Can't wait to see what WH looks like in the new game since he gets a new look every game.

They should stick with the Hummer tho.

Rather informative. I will remember this the next time I play as Shadow in Small Brawl. Thanks.

For Warthog, I never really played much as him, so, I am not too sure as his special would have different ways to be used.

Speaking of Shadow, I had a very unusual experience with Piecemeal (boss version). He shot Shadow's special at me, but it homed in like Spectre's special. I guess he gets extra properties the big cheater.

There's one thing I haven't been able to do again in the game. Maybe others will be up for the challenge? In the Holiday Havoc level I managed to get on the top part of the couch. It was early when I first started playing the game so it didn't seem like a big deal at the time. Now I'd really like to get back up there.

I just learned today that you can jump onto breakable things so long as you land with wheels only. I mean stuff like the Christmas presents around the tree or the plate of gingerbread cookies. Heck, I got Mime to jump onto the soda cans around the couch. Whether or not you can jump on everything needs further testing.

Up down right doesn't use up your battery power and it does your special if you have any. Useful if you don't want to waste time scrolling to select your special. Found that tip on game winners I think but felt that i should put it here too_^)

Gahh, I'm soooo close! I tried taking Crimson Viper off the ramp to reach the top of the couch but there's no way he can reach that sort of spot. I had to get creative and jumped on Darkside, had him jump and turbo jump off of him while he had me on his back <@_@) Just a little short V_V Mime is probably the best at being carried because she's the smallest. It's too bad the bottom car can't drive around with the other on their back because it looks cool when you both fire your machine guns_^) If you're well balanced you can both rotate in opposite directions like a machine gun turret too. I figured I'd try Piecemeal because his car was the tallest but he's too hard to balance on properly.   Sad

Interesting post.

On a side note, how do you get Trapper?  I swear I beat the game with everyone, but I still don't have him.  I might still need to do Axel, but I think that's it.

Beat it with everyone pure and simple along with Mime, Darkside, and Axel. Easy way is to refer to the endings you've earned. I wish you the best, Trapper is fun, but his special has a lot of faults. Watch this video to get some insight into some of his problems:

Oh, and Shadow Assassin, I made a mistake. Shadow's direct hits do more damage so try and hit them dead on if you can.  Grin

Well I've been unsuccessful at figuring out Warthog's secret to his missiles and reaching the top of the couch. Maybe someday I'll find out how to. It's a shame remote control bombs don't let you go higher. I might try and experiment with using Shadow's special as an extra boost because it seems to bounce people higher than remote bombs ._.' Some of my last thoughts are that this game really is a lot of fun despite the graphics. It taught me not to judge a game by its graphics (and for those of you who own TM III and 4, they can be fun as well even if they ain't nearly as cool as Singletrac/Incog stuff).

Oh, I also didn't know you could destroy the playhouses in the first Playground Peril stage OR shoot down the slabs of meat in the Meat Your Maker level. I wonder if they can damage people if they land on someone. No way to test it for sure because 2 player mode they don't have slabs of meat come out periodically v_v LAter!

good question. I havent digested TMSB to such a degree but from what I noticed theres nothing special about Warthog's weapon.

almost forgot Axels special worked that way tbh.. that Sweet Tooth's rico like special is what made me like playing the game haha.

one thing too - there is no such thing as looking too much into it at TMA. We're hardcore.

Thanks for the encouragement. I actually sat down and tried a tournament with Warthog to see if I couldn't get some sort of insight. I got killed by the grinder in Meat your Maker with 40 power missiles and 5 specials and said Frick. But I did learn you can put up a shield to prevent yourself from getting killed so there was some good that came out of it.

After playing around with Warthog I'm confident to say that you have to break out of the mentality that he's tough like in the older TM's. He's a very hit and run type of character. What's more, is that his special works very well in that fashion. It's all your eggs in one basket in one shot unlike Crimson Fury. Just shoot, hope for the best and go. I think the biggest find I made was the connection with freezing though. Typically, there's two ways to unfreeze someone, napalm and a special (except Outlaw). Warthog's special hits once so it's easier to manage than compared with someone like Thumper or Trapper. Here's an example of what I mean:
1. Special 2. Freeze (in rapid succession). This means the second they get hit they get frozen so you can use other items. If it were Thumper you'd unfreeze them and besides, it's not easy to aim with his super. I suppose you could use this same method in playing with Shadow. Hit them stop them keep hitting them run away etc. I'm looking into this way too much  Embarrassed

Oh yeah, Archminion, I didn't respond to your opinion and I felt bad for leaving you out. I do agree, Warthog doesn't look very Warthoggy. The game definitely could have used more than 2 girls. If they are to make a new TM game for PS3, I know that they'll be able to do something fitting for Warthog that we'll love. He hasn't missed a tournament yet. Hmm, come to think of it, this version of Warthog looks sorta like Pit Viper, does anyone remember her?

I think the conclusion I've come to in regards to Warthog's special is that its main strength is its homing ability. Although it doesn't have Spectre's special homing ability it does decent damage if you string enough together. After seeing how much damage 5 specials equals to on Piecemeal in a versus mode experiment Warthog is probably average at best. 5 specials does around half of Piecemeals health and it's certainly better than Spectre's accumulated damage. Warthog is a fun challenge to play as and his special is effective from longer distances. However, if I were to consider him in a tier list he'd probably fall in as second last in terms of his special ability.

Fun trivia for Small Brawl: What happens when you take Darkside's special against Hammerhead's special? Both get increases in armour and speed. Both can handle quite a few power missiles with their specials on. The answer is, although Darkside still has his special on, Hammerhead will do regular damage to Darkside and take hardly any damage. So, if you're ever using Hammerhead against Darkside, you know what to do_^)

I think that's all I have to say about Small Brawl. If anyone got suckered into getting TM III or 4 and think it's garbage I will say two things. It's only garbage if you don't know how to play it properly. The core of TM is driving unique vehicles with unique stats and blow stuff up in good environments. Maybe these tricks will renew some respect for these games:

Sorry for the quality, I'm here to share tricks on unorthodox play and make people play old stuff again. Hope you find it interesting  Embarrassed
