How should the new TM ONLINE be setup
12/28/09 at 18:27:38

I was thinking about this recently and I'm wondering how Dave and co will set this next TM up.  There was debate a long time ago on the old TMA about whether or not the game will have a story mode or a 1 player mode - I forget what was the outcome of it.

How would you like to see this done:
-Option 1 is more or less how TMBO was setup (even though it was a stand alone game) This would mean that the online is completely seperate from single player, and all the cars and levels would be available and ready to go.

-Option 2 is more like TMHO in which most cars and levels are unlocked for online play, but you need to play through single player in order to unlock additional cars and levels to use online.  Even though you didnt have a specific level or car you were still able to play against someone else who had it.

-Option 3 is a stab at an online-rpg-level-up technique - as where the more points you have the more you can unlock - with rpgs its usually character class upgrades with attacks and defenses.  With tm points could be used to unlock new cars and levels - or online points could unlock custom paints car shells or armor upgrades for already unlocked vehicles.

-Option 4 is simple - for those who don't want to play through and find their car in single player or are good enough to get (x) amount of points to unlock in multiplayer can pay (x) amount of dollars and purchase whatever they want.

-Option 5 is..well..none of these ideas sound fun or workable to you.  If that's the case I would love to hear your thoughts on it.

I personally am all for Option 2 - I would like to see this TM be about all skill. Obtaining hidden cars and levels is just as good as bragging rights as are trophies to me. I would hope to see all cheat codes removed, so no more god mode, mega guns, killer weapons or anything like that.

I'd say something like CoD: MW2 where you rank up and unlock stuff. It sucks you in.

Good post Maart.

Well, I'm going to be the awkward bastard and say I'd like to see a blend of all these options to some extent.

One of the (many) reasons Full Auto 2 sucked online was because you had to unlock nearly everything in the hard as nails career mode.
All the better cars and even the majority of the weapons in that game needed to be unlocked to be used online.

Full Auto 1 gave you everything except weapon tuning for online so everyone could have some fun.

btw, nobody seemed to play FA2 online at all.

Now, I still like the idea of earning some stuff in whatever single player mode the game might have but I'd say keep it to bonus skins and other extras for customizing your cars.
I'd maybe say throw in just 1 or 2 very special vehicles that need unlocking but make it so these aren't top tier cars at all - not cars that could be more powerful (either intentionally or not) than the standard set.
These bonus cars could even be alternate versions of old favourites.

I'd also like all levels unlocked from the start. I think this is fair as there will always be a decent starting selection of cars (I hope).

I like the points idea and if this was implemented then whats to say you don't unlock some gear in the single player (as I mentioned just now) and you can also unlock some more special exclusive online stuff by playing the game and getting a higher 'level'. This could also make each car have little additional things- not higher play stats maybe as that might ruin a delicate balance but just mandatory extras for the cars. Bars on windows, armored grills that sort of thing.

And finally. Jaffe himself has confirmed on twitter at one point that DLC is happening and with that I'd expect some cash transactions for more unique stuff again including extra maps and game modes.

Also a few more vehicles and possibly weapons but I'd still hope these were exclusive from the other bonus stuff mentioned since it would be better to distinguish between who's earned what and who paid for it.

Cash for honours sir?

Anyway, that's what I'd like, its a big system but everyone of those ideas could work together I think.

I'm out.

I think Option two would be a good way for the new game to go.

I like the RPG theory, that could also be an interesting way to play the game.

Great ideas.

Im 100% dead set on wanting option #1. Anything else is a huge letdown imo. It hurts online-only players.

Keep the single-player and multiplayer seperate. I don't want any cross over whatsoever.

Most games I play competitively, the hardcore crowd tends to never even bother with the single-player experience, they ONLY play multiplayer. Forcing people to unlock stuff in single-player would potentially deter people from bothering to play the game portions they want (online), because they know they don't have all the unlocks.

Any singleplayer uber boss cars should also be rebalanced for multiplayer. Like TMBO, Minion wasn't even close to the boss you fight in the stadium.

Any potential upgrades or bonuses awarded to those who grind would simply unbalance the playing field, and hurt potential newcomers into the game who want to play fair matches, finding themselves outgunned and outmatched simply because someone else has a "better version" of a car/weapon/special/etc than themselves.

Can anyone honestly say they will first play this game single player instead of multiplayer first? I know I wont be touching the story mode (if there even will be one) unless there is no one online at that time that I want to play with.

DLC is fine by me, its what you come to expect in this generation. Although paying to unlock things already on the disc is a fucking crime and only scum sucking devils like Capcom and Namco Bandai do that crap.

But the best addition to this generation is the ability of patching a game (as Ive said many times). Devs can rebalance anything they see fit post-launch.

So yea, good post.

Excellent post.

I would have to agree with RoaDiE in that singleplayer and online should be kept separate and gamers should NOT be able to pay to open up unlockables.  You should have to rank up online ie score points to open up new stuff, maybe with certain requirements ie a certain amount of power missile kills in a round.

I know if there is a single player mode my cousin and I will most likely play it first before jumping online. Still who knows?  Maybe I will be the one doing the single player while he insists that I jump online with him.  I really, really, really hope there is an online co-op mode.  Now that is what I would definitely play first with him.

I voted for option one. Call me old fashioned. Personally I want a single player story just like the other games and just like any other game I will be playing the single player first to get that out of the way and learn how to play and utilize all the weapons, cars, and levels. Single player is always a tutorial or training ground and was always one of the funnest co-op games to me. I don't mind working out some strats on AI and getting some cool new PS3 cinematic endings for characters as well as trophies.

I remember reading a while back someone saying they were looking at Halo for inspiration as what they wanted to do with the new TM. Mostly from the standpoint of having tons and tons of customization options in the MP. This could translate to anything though from car customization right down to every little thing you can do to change up the gameplay.

While I like the idea of unlocking shit in games like MW2 and BC2, I don't think that formula would work well in a TM game, but by all means if they make it work I'd be fine with it. However, I doubt that is the way they will go with it. If you were to unlock things through online play I think it would be more along the lines of new skins, leveries or things such as that. I'm not a fan of the idea of unlocking new and better weapon types. TM usually already has plenty of balance issues so I don't think they need to add more.

More than anything I want detailed leader boards with all kinds of stats displayed like k/d ratio or maybe even a damage dealt/damage received ratio, favorite car, favorite map, etc, etc. With leaderboards would probably come some sort of matchmaking system with the new TM which seems to be the norm these days in almost all online games which would mean no more unlimited weapons games dominating the servers because they would want leaderboards to show skill of course. At least, this is what I hope would happen. If they do decide to keep the shitty ass unlim game option I hope its only for private games.

While these discussions are fun I think we've technically taken them as far as we can based on mostly speculation over the last couple years. I think these topics will be even more relevant and constructive once we get even a little info on the new TM. Not taking anything away from this post of course, mart.

I'm feeling the way Road and Xizor do. It has to be because were old school but, Road said it best about the switchover from single to multi.

Also the Xizor mentioning the balance issues again. If unlockables can be bought/earned, would it disrupt the gameplay?

This was, and still is a hot topic. Esspecially for us who have really picked this over the years at TMA. I just seriously hope ESP has read up from here, and from old TMA.

For online, I think all the levels should be unlocked from the start.  I know first hand how annoying it can be when you don't have the same places unlocked as your friends.

For the cars, however, maybe it could be like V8:2.  You have all the cars, but the more you play them, the more upgraded they can be.  They would have an altered appearance to show they are more functional.  I don't know, but this is one way it could work.

It occurred to me last night that instead of changing our name or tag with the new Twisted Metal like we did in TMBO we could just make multiple PSN accounts since they are free. Oh yes, the days of secret players and guessing who you are actually playing against will live on!

:::Goes off to reserve Magnum TMA, Kilrahi TMA, Stitches TMA:::

Something tells me these guys are gonna suck at the new TM.
  Cool

I voted for Option 2. Simply because I don't want whiny 13 year olds (No offence, -SCoLD-) asking me which button did I press to jump and other silly questions.

Let 'em learn that on their own in single player.

Had some trouble with the previous version of TMA, it would lock me out each time my IP address changed. I thought about  waiting for the new version, but it seems to be taking longer than expected...

So yeah, I'll be lurking about.

thank you thank you and thank you for the responses and votes.

I was hoping for more - especially from the other (newer) members and their thoughts..oh well.

I voted for option 2. I enjoy having your hardwork and dedication from the single player pour over into the multiplayer - but thats just me.  I must admit, I hated the mini games in head on, but I liked the idea of unlocking things - if it were up to me I would have it so the mini games were nothing more than challenge matches. For example you teleport and you are in a remastered version of Paris taking on Mr. Slam. If you win you get the car and the level and if you lose you get nothing.  There's just something fulfilling about finding secrets and then sharing them on TMA and comparing notes - its almost like a website co-op game.

I can see why people would like option 1.  I don't mind it either, I would like to go old school and finish the single player like Xizor would and watch all the movies and make posts with Monkeykong about water-runs-deep storyline and whatifs, but lil bastards like Roadie would keep me plugged into the multiplayer and not let up. I'm not sure if its a sense of competitiveness or the feeling of if I'm not online every second that I can get I'll lose my edge or spot or whatever.

I think I had mentioned the matchmaker back in the old TMA (like halo) I would like to see people rank up and unlock cars and levels.  Kinda how MAG will allow you to unlock different game modes when you are good enough. MAG starts you off at an 8 on 8 and once you reach a certain level you can play a 128 on 128.  This idea is probably the least feasible but most interesting.  I do want warhawkesq stats and ranking system with leader boards patches and dlc.  I will be more than happy if ESP would continue to support the game well after the release

keep the replies and votes coming. I'll leave it open until the end of next week.
