I was pretty surprised to hear some of Dan Donegan's work with albums that came after The Sickness and Believe (that's his name, right?). He had some great solos, but I think the songs of those albums suffered a bit from weaker riffs.

They changed their bassist at some point there, so that could be a good reason for that particular flaw.

Precisely. I was blown away when I heard the first radio track from Ten Thousand Fists, "Stricken" I think it was, when I heard Donegan playing an actual solo. I liked a couple tracks from that CD but overall I thought the quality of their music, or riffs really, started suffering after that. Disturbed was the last good band that came out in my opinion. Everything and everyone since then is fucking garbage.

As for me, my enthusiasm for music has decreased greatly over the last 4 or 5 years. The fact that I'm currently not doing anything myself with music and the fact that I can't seem to find new good music that I like any more makes what was once a huge obsession, passion and hobby of mine nothing more than a casual experience.

I thought that solo in the middle of 'Stricken' was fucking amazing.. I havent heard the whole album but if its all as up-to-par as that one song, then I'd assume the whole album is tits.. I own The Sickness and Believe and thought they were awesome.. I mean, there are a couple songs I usually skip but in general, are very listenable

Have either of you heard their Indestructible album? I honestly didn't listen to Disturbed as avidly after Believe, but I recently started picking out bits and pieces of the stuff they released afterwards based on reviews etc.

"The Night" features the best solo I've heard from Dan Donegan: it's pretty complex and varied, very impressive for anyone with a history nu-metal. I gained some respect for him after hearing it for the first time. The riff in the song is pretty cool too.

"Inside the Fire" isn't too bad as well.

Incidentally, I've also lost a lot of enthusiasm for new bands. I think that started for me ever since we crossed 2000 or so.

But every now and then, a new act does arrive that brings me cheer. Muse might be soft for most of you, but they're quite talented, not just compared to the new flock but all on their own. Frontman Matthew Bellamy is gifted on both guitar and piano.

His voice has been compared to Radiohead's Thom Yorke in the past because of his style of singing, but the overall sound is far more grounded in rock than anything else. They also end a lot of their songs with Rage Against The Machine riffs when performing live.

I haven't heard Indestructible because honestly I wasn't crazy about the title track that I heard on the radio and if that is the best they can offer up from that CD then the rest can't be that good. Not that the Indestructible song was bad, just wasn't up to par compared to older stuff in my opinion. Normally when a bands musicians get better the music does as well but that doesn't really seem to be the case with Disturbed.

Donegans solos are ok, but to me no one has better solos than John Petrucci from Dream Theater. His licks, phrasing, and overall flow never disappoint and he always makes every solo feel unique and exciting.

I'm just disappointed that all the "new" progressive rock/metal acts that were supposed to be the next generation or new crop of Symphony X or Dream Theater-esq bands either sold out or faded away quickly. My taste is so particular that its almost impossible for me to find new bands that I like so I've all but quit looking.

I can't understand this obsession with Devin Townsend. When I visit prog rock forums everyone tries to turn me on to him and throws his work in with most of the other cool stuff I do actually listen to but every time I try to give him a listen I just can't dig his stuff at all. I think its mostly his lyrics and vocals more than anything though.

Ive been hearing more of Porcupine Tree lately because they keep popping up in my stations on last.fm. Like Townsend they are another one of those bands that gets lumped in with most of the other prog stuff I like. They seem ok, I can dig their stuff I guess.

Kamelot has some decent songs from time to time as well.

I haven't heard anything from Indestructable myself, but i'll hunt down some later tonight. everytime I see it in the stores, its like $20 and I stopped paying that much for cd's a long time ago

Dream Theatre and Symphany X are amazing.. I haven't heard too many ppl besides me and a couple friends talk about them. I guess those are a couple bands who flew a lil low on the mainstream radar, which is always good these days

my metal roots are grounded in the early to late 90s.. back when the nu-metal scene first got rollin. back when KoRn was still the king of the underground, and bands like Sevendust, Limp Bizkit, System of a Down and Incubus were still generally unknown.... and damn do I miss those days

some cds I've bought in recent months, jus to throw out some ideas. I know i'll catch hell for a few of them:

* Staind - 14 Shades of Grey
* Staind - Chapter V
* ICP - The Wraith
* ICP - BANG! POW! BOOM!
* (hed)PE - Insomnia
* Bullet For My Valentine - The Poison

I can't really speak for the entire Indestructible album because I think I've only listened to the whole thing once in its entirety, and that was while drawing, so I wasn't paying the greatest attention.

But before you spend your money, there are a lot of people who put this stuff on YouTube.

I don't know a great deal of metal bands, but I've exposed myself to a variety of metal's subgenres over the years. I like the classic sounds of Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath, the crazy Japanese bastards (X Japan, hide, Dir en grey), and the modern "alternative" mix artists such as (old) Incubus.

What I really hate though are artists like Linkin Park thumping each other's chests and proclaiming themselves to be metal. What annoying one chord faggots!

yea, most bands who get a whiff of fame will let it go to their heads. ppl like Chester from Linkin Park have this over-inflated ego that's very undeserved. his voice isn't that great at all, and his lyrics are kinda lame. luckily for LP, they have Mike Shinoda, who is actually very talented in almost every aspect. but there is one trick to listening to a Linkin Park album.. don't listen to the radio/singles. listen to the songs that didn't get put out and you'll like the album. Meteora was actually pretty good if you take my advice

I have a copy of Meteora somewhere, but never got around to listening to it, but I will eventually.

It's not as though I don't think Linkin Park is entertaining, they are. But as you said, it's about knowing the limits to your own potential. Arrogance annoys the hell out of me.

The whole thing gets a bit predictable too.

"open with a synthe string section... add a generic drum machine beat... have mike shinoda rap monotonously... enter Chester, with his constipated screaming and breathless whining..."

Admix an open C# chord to repeat for the whole song (I never understood why their guitarist needed those huge earmuffs when all he's doing is fretting a single finger across his fretboard and palm muting the same damned C# power chord)

Then take the final product, and put it in the trailer for a deceptively unrewarding Transformers movie.

BAM! You've got every 13 year old in America hooked!

Aw, come on guys. We are really going to devolve into talking about Linkin Park already...or, at all? Really? I hate them with a passion. I know no one is really praising them but come on.

Saw Dream Theater a few months ago in Atlanta with Zappa Meets Zappa opening for them. Fucking amazing show! Probably one of the best shows I've ever been to. I also saw Tool the night before. Everyone told me before I saw them, because I'm apparently one of the last people on earth to see them in concert, that they are SO AMAZING and I have to say...I love Tool a lot, but they sucked in concert. They don't have much of a stage presence and their songs aren't that entertaining in a live setting. That and Maynard was content to just hang out on the side of the drum set not really making himself known to the audience at all. Kind of weird but so is he.

As for me, I'm about to head out to Star Wars in Concert. Oh yeah.

I saw Tool at Ozzfest '98, and like you said, they dont have much for a live show. they had a huge flat screen in the background playing some weird ass MWP screensaver shit that would make the acid dropping ppl in the crowd go nuts. but thats the extent of it

the best show I ever been to was ICOP, believe it or not. they had a full stage set, replicating a 3-ring circus.. 5 or 6 guys in coveralls wearing demon clown masks, spraying 2-litre Faygo bottles everywhere, as was ICP themselves. before the first song was even done, I was dripping wet with Faygo.. and the set lasted over an hr. not to mention they played alot of old shit, rather than try to play all of the new album in one set. they acted out some of the songs on stage, like 'Mr. Johnson's Head'.. they even had an impromptu wrestling match, ending when some pedo was powerbombed thru a table. fucking EPIC

Tool albums should come with a warning label that reads: "Warning, do not listen to this while driving."

I like minimalism as much as the next guy, but there's something about playing the same riff for 6 minutes that doesn't go down very well with me.

Are you talking about Tool's guitarist? If so yeah, I love Tool and all but I've always wished they had a slightly better guitar player. I mean, he has great rhythm and timing and he gets the job done, but the music could be a little more in that department.  He should learn to really solo as well. They do almost reach the point of complete monotony in some songs where they ramble on for to long, but overall that really doesn't happen to much for me. That was a huge problem with them live for me though where they would drag songs out FOR-E-VER and when you aren't really known for your musicianship as a guitarist then this gets really annoying. The main draw for me to Tool is the drummer. Hes pretty damn good for a popular mainstream band which is something you don't see a whole lot of these days. I've always liked how Tool has a progressive edge to them with their longer songs and odd time signatures yet still manage to be popular.
