Can net damage be balanced?

without mort having to use his morticulator and coming up with another formula (I still say the other one is broken!!! i'm undefeated against you bitch!)

For those of you who forgot or don't know in tmbo and tmho the cars had the advantage for the most part when it came to one on ones.  The fatter and slower trucks became point buckets for the speedy cars.  Along with the speed came the ability for the cars to nab all the weapons in the arena over the trucks.  Mort tried to come up with a balance that put the cars in different categories based upon their armor points.  Meaning that if Mr Grimm were to take on Junkyard dog, the Grimm player would have to win by +800 points inorder to beat Jyd in a net damage game.

It made it near impossible for any car to win over a heavily armored car, not to mention that the only thing taken into consideration was the cars armor, nothing about the car's special regeneration ect.

Would Jaffe fiddiling with the scoring on the cars in a net damage game be a simple solution? For example a gas can would do 20 points of damage in tmb, Lets say in the new TM, if a gas can lands on grimm, it does the full 20 points of damage(since grimm is the weakest car) , but if it hits jyd, it would only take away 12 points of damage and it would subtract the normal amount of health. obiviously 20 points on a car with 95 isnt going to be the same as a car that has 220 points of health.

I understand what you mean. It comes to "balance" It took a long time for pretty much everyone to agree on what was considered fair or cheap. That was also for any other mode besides Net Damage.

I dunno if it's a good idea for all that stuff with the new TM untill we all get a chance to sink out teeth into it. He could make the cars the way you suggested but, it'd turn around we might think it'd be better some other way. I have a feeling it's going to be a debate for a very long time.

Balance. Man that word is a moving target.

I think that solution seems very reasonable. Thats the way it should be. If a car with more armor gets hit by the same weapon as a car with weaker armor then you should be able to see the difference. Hey, whatever helps out the big dogs as those have always been my favorites to play as.

And winning by +800 points with Grimm!? Good lord. That seems a bit excessive.

this thread makes me miss TMBO.

I never liked Netdamage but I would be interested in seeing a system in a new game that made it "balanced". Every mode seems to have its bad sides.. LMS had to stragglers that didnt fight.. Kills had people stealing... the most balanced would be LMS imo because you could always gang bang the stragglers or maybe a health draining mechanism that starts after a certain amount of time being out of battle.. or have a timer for your weapons if youre no fighting and then would either drop or fade away.

thanks for the replies.  Mags, I think its the people that are the moving targets, not so much the balance. I think its human nature to look for the easy way out, or the cheap way to win.  Its good that TM is coming out on a system that can easily download patches and updates, I think Jaffe would take us seriously enough if we found really bad exploits in the game and try to fix it.

Xizor, maybe 800 is a bit excessive, however I do remember beating mort by atleast 600 points as spectre against his manslaughter and it wasnt enough.   The method Im thinking of, will make it even so that the bigger cars are no longer point buckets, and the cars won't have to reach some crazy point gap to win.  However, if ramming is back in full force (like identicle to tm2 ramming) we may not need to half the armor points for the fat cars, since that might be an instant kill.

Roket, touching back on the balance or human exploits - I think thats a great idea to start subtracting health from players that camp in LMS.  I think the term is called sandbagging.  In destruction derby remake for the ps2, you were giving a timer that would start counting down to zero if you were sandbagging. If you weren't able to make contact with a car before the timer hit zero you were out.  I also think that the players own mines should not only take away health but take away points too - this would prevent players mining themselves down so their opponents can't score alot of points on them. And also I think suicides should take away points as well, so players who constantly jump off of buildings to avoid weapons would be penalized too.

This explination would cover a majority of issues in a ranked system. It would sometimes be unfair because not everyone will never fall off the edge, or never run into their own mine at some point. That's a small issue. It'd be minimum BECAUSE fair people are trying to play with honor. LOL. I know there were times I needed one more hit to win, and I fell off, or ran into my mine.

Patches and downloads will hopefully bring the new TM into a good balance. I'm really sure Jaffe remembers alot of what was discussed before.
