Boring technical time again, but for anyone interested I'm hopin this post doesn't come across as a retread of a similar post I made on the real TMA.

I've tried to compare that topic against something else for a different view on this.

Anyway.

I was playing Head On for PSP again today on hard mode and just realised how much the cheap shitty AI irritates me.
Those bastards just converge on you all the time, like they workin in tandem.

It's meant to be a fuckin free for all godammit!

Now I know that some of the other games have done this to some extent but never as bad as this I thought.

I remember reading a former Singletrac devs blog which stated that the game's AI was programmed to never have more than 2 cars gang up on you at one time which is fair enough (he was taliking about TM1 but I would say this applies to TM2 as well).

The AI cars of TM1,2 and Rogue Trip also had something else unusual. They each had their own weapon sets and attacks.
No two cars would use exactly the same moves.

I liked it.

It looks likely that there will be a single player mode of sorts in the new game but would you guys like to see the return of a more fairer AI like that in TM1 and 2 (also with the unique car weapon sets) or would you prefer to see a proper 'human' AI?

Now if the game took a more real approach to it's AI I'm thinkin the cars would have to behave EXACTLY like a real opponent- realtime re-charge on special attacks, actually having to break off a fight to pick up weapons and health etc.

Now I also know how ppl feel about health whoring but with a lifelike AI the cars would make the same mistakes as humans- taking chances, searching for health in empty spots etc (same with weapons).

Players could even set the difficulty before the game AND also a bot personality a bit like what Perfect dark did. So you could have the Health Whore, the Camper etc. (ok those are shitty examples sorry).

But you see what I'm saying?

I just don't like the way the AI was heading with Head On, it felt so robotic and all the enemies felt the same. There was no real different tactics for fighting against them with the exception of the few bosses and Mr fucking bastard Slam.

So if TM has a new single player be it just training for the real MP game or a full on story mode would you like to see a return of the older TM1 and 2 style car unique AI or lifelike AI?




Or should I just fuck off instead?

I've always liked the idea of lifelike AI, but the problem is that if you give them limitations (limited weapons, limited knowledge of health locations, limited AA, and infighting between them), it's harder to maintain the difficulty level.

It's a lot harder to make genuinely smart AI than it is to take shortcuts by giving them superhuman abilities. If they could do it, though, I'd be all for it.

Another option would be to increase the number of enemies in any given level (hell, double it if they're killing each other). This presentes a technical challenge though, as well as a level design issue (though they could make the SP levels big and rip them into different pieces for online like they did for TMB)

I say life-like AI.. I like the idea of following a bot who is heading into a dead-end where health 'usually' is, only to find nothing... and then he's got me to contend with to get out. I like the idea of the AI being infallible, like humans are in real life

and I also like the idea of individual attacks and strategies for each car.. every car is different from the rest, so it should fight the differently as well

In hindsight though, the over realistic weapon spamming the AI does prepares you for the many retarded infinite weapons games online.

In fact I think there might be only 2 cpu cars that drop the shits.

Grasshopper might be the other I think

I did actually like thid AI because it made the enemy cars fight different. I know that Slam and Grimm are bastard freeze spammers so i want to take care when near them etc

I would hope Jaffe and company learned from TMBO, or heard from TMBO and keep Unlims away from the game.

I don't think he'd forget how unpopular that was with the hardcore crowd.

Well I think online console gaming has changed DRASTICALLY from the old PS2/TMBO days so even if there are tons of unlimited weapons games for the new TM I highly doubt its going to take away from the experience like it did back in the day where servers were damn near empty anyways later on in the games lifespan.

That is true. Online gaming has evolved by leaps and bounds since TMBO. The concern I have is exactly that. Imagine a shitton more people wanting unlims than back in the TMBO days. Esspecially how people who play online now will do anything to win games and pad stats. If Unlims can do that without even coding/hacking/lag switching.....the Unlim community probably could explode.

The servers and everything will definately be packed. This time around though, I'm sure the population to play TMPS3 online will smother whatever numbers TMBO ever had back in it's heyday.

Even with the small Unlim community TMBO had, they still managed to cause quite a stir. Now imagine that population x3. I really beleve if the mistake of Unlims is an option, it'll create a community totaly opposite of what we have here. Not website wize. Game room wize.

I think everything in the next TM should be earned. I think all cheat codes should be removed. no more god mode, no more homing napalm, or sell your soul, or 1 hit kill weapons. Also unlimited weapons should be nothing more than a bad memory of the past, the same goes for the single weapon mods too, you know those lame ass games where people would set it to 99 kills with machine guns only or AA only. Just think of how much better it would be if the entire population were playing normal games, that we would want to join in. If anything I would like to see a ranked sever and unranked server complete with a matchmaker system

The way Jaffe was talking its looking likely that the next game will focus more on bringin people together, so maybe less obscure game types and mods.

He's already stated that LMS wasn't popular so that might not be back.
