No Twisted Metal at E3 This Year
05/26/09 at 18:26:51

http://kotaku.com/5269758/david-jaffe-were-not-showing-anything-at-e3

David Jaffe of developer Eat Sleep Play talks about the chances of him showing something at E3. And they are?

Jaffe, best known for creating hack-and-slash God of War and vehicular-combat Twisted Metal, said that he will be there on the show floor, but the project he is working on doesn't seem as though it will be.

"I'll say it right now, because some people are speculating: we're absolutely not going to be at E3," Jaffe said in his video update. "I will be there... but we're not showing anything."

That's this year, so what about next year? "Next year, I fully expect us to be on the show floor," Jaffe added. "Part of me would love to announce at E3, so you walk into the Sony booth and bam, there's our game."

After Jaffe posted a snap of an email, speculation is swirling that Eat Sleep Play is working on a PS3 version of Twisted Metal.

Sad but it gives someone like me time to get the funding for a damn PS3.

Pretty much confirms that everyone who thought this game was releasing in 2009 was a frickin idiot.

Jaffe himself said the announcement wouldn't be at a trade show and his estimate in March for the announcement was one year, which means March 2010ish for the announcement alone.  It's going to be a Holiday or Summer (at earliest) 2010 game.

The developer list for E3 was released in March and Eat Sleep Play was not on it.  Glad someone finally took that rumor out back and put it out of its misery.  Jaffe said he was going to E3 as a fan and not a developer also in the same interview in March (HipHopGamer, I believe).

Yeah, that's a bummer. But guys, at least look at the bright side, they still have lot of time to work on it and deliver the best TM game ever on the PS3.

If I worked at Sony and had the final say in the date of announcement, I'd want it to be next year just to give them enough time to perfect it, then come up with the right release date that doesn't collide with other medium to large titles, giving TM breathing room to reel in buyers and new fans. Not to mention, to build the hype.

I've said it a million times... but I'd rather they take there time with TMPS3 and make the best game possible. You never know... this might be the last TM game we see in a long time. Let's have it be a good one!

Honestly waiting until Christmas 2010 isn't that big of deal. Hell... I'll still be waiting for The Avengers movie when TM hits shelves. As well as a sequel to The Dark Knight ... all good things come in time.

I know I'm an impatient twat but its not that I want to hurry the game along or anything- far from it.

I'm just aching to know how its going to change or 'evolve' as one of the team once put it.

So I was really expecting to see something this year and maybe soonish as well.

It is obvious now that that isn't going to happen and I'm cool with it of course.

When Jaffe did the HHG interview I still thought maybe he was yanking our chains a bit but I can't see him still solidly denying the game being present at E3 if it is definitely not.

I do think they were planning on showing it at some point in it's schedule at e3 but as Jaffe and crew himself have said 'it keeps getting bigger.'

So since I'm such a positive thinking kinda guy I can deduce from this that we are going to get a big TM game- something at least as big as Warhawk anyway.

I mean ok so we've all know for months that it wasn't going to be some small DL game for the PSN but I was still thinking for a while that it might have basically been Warhawk but with big MP.

Now I'm going to go back on what I said ages ago and even state that maybe it will have a deepish story to it???

I mean I don't know if they'll go as deep as Black (even Jaffe has said that story isn't so important) but maybe at least a fun deep single player mode (which I was not expecting at all).

So I'd say it's bittersweet.

But I always liked that tangy aftertaste anyway...

It'd been good maybe to see a little something but, if it's not going to happen, so be it. I also wouldn't want this game rushed either.

I dunno about 2010. It might wind up being somewhere in 2011.

So long as it's not near 12/2012. We won't have any time at all since the world is gonna end.

12/2012?

I could see a kind of irony in that especially if the game is a world tour again.

Heh, maybe it's not a game they're making us.. It's a fucking real life Twisted Metal tournament that involves us as the contestants!

Now, that's the way I want to go out, in a big fiery explosion with my carcass flying out and hitting the pavement hard.

In Sony and all TM developers' defense, a Twisted Metal game is probably much harder to program than most of the other genres out there.  You have to perfect wall collision, weapon hit detection, pick ups, balancing specials and car stats.  Then you [usually, probably not on this PS3 version though] have to make middle and end movies for each character.

So as the technology keeps getting better and games take longer and longer to make.  Our kids might only see TM games every 15-20 years.  Unless they remove the tourney all together, and make it a multiplayer experience entirely.
