Feeling Nostalgic

I was sittin here a couple nights ago, lookin at my stack of games sittin next to the dresser.. and noticed my old Road Rash and RR3D just sittin there, hadnt been touched in yrs. Well a case of middle skool caught me, and the next thing I know, I had been playing Road Rash for 6 hrs and my gf was getting pissed that I hadnt left the office where my PS2 is all day. The more I played, the more I missed those days, way back then, when I could just sit there and just space out on my games and not give a shit about anything else.
As soon as I'm done with RR, I'm gonna put in 3D and beat it as well... then the Genesis gets hooked up and I'm tearin up the original RR and RR3..

Anyone else just randomly dig out old consoles and games, and just game out for hrs on end?

All the time. As a matter of fact, I love retro gaming! I need to pick up a copy of Road Rash for the 3DO, its funny that you should mention playing that.

I picked up Donkey Kong Country for the Super NES a little while back and have been playing that one. Fun stuff. Its amazing how that game is years old.... yet still looks and plays great.

I cant retro game for a few reasons. For one Im not a graphics whore but I just enjoy the depth, physics, and polish of new flashier games. Its easier to get immersed in them and play them for hours on end. And two, whenever I go back and play those old games they are always far far shittier than I remember so I just kinda like to leave or preserve my memories of those games as they were....being totally fucking awesome at that point in my life.

I do however get a craving for Power Stone 2 a lot. I actually still own that game even though I dont even own a Dreamcast anymore. Makes no sense I know but for some reason I just couldnt part with it even when I had to sell my DC when I was hard for cash. One of my friends has a DC still so we might bust it out this weekend.

Ive also been wanting to play the SNES classic Turtles in Time and Im happy its finally coming to XBLA.

As far as Road Rash goes I used to love those games. Thats one reason why I enjoyed the DLC for GTA IV as much as I did because they had bike races where you could beat the shit out of your opponents and it reminding me of Road Rash a lot.

Retro Gaming forever, I say.

I could never adapt very well with modern gaming. I probably will have a very bitch of a time even trying to play even one of them. I'm proud to be one of the many, if not, few who own their retro consoles. I'm more of a Sony/Sega person, so I favored the Genesis and PS1/PS2 the most. I know PS2 is still going slowly, but eventually it'll be there.

Countless memories on every console. I'm more of into gameplay/story myself, never really paid attention to graphics. Graphics will only come to play when you're into RPG or some Adventure game. Everything else, it can just fuck off. heh.

It's more comforting to play retro games (NES, SNES etc) through emulation. I never could touch the retro consoles I actually own. Except for the PS1 once in a while. Some things are just best left in the past as they are.

Speaking of retro gaming, I had a buddy of mine tell me the Sega genisis games are alot of fun on the 360.

He was also saying it's easy to farm MS points off of it too, so you achivement whores had better get at it.  Grin

Mag, MS points and gamerscore points are different!

I used to play a lot of emulated stuff. Mostly things I missed out on when I was a kid. I still enjoy playing the Streets of Rage series and Gunstar Heroes for Sega. Thankfully those are on the 360 as well or at least will be soon.

I try to play retro games once in a while but like Xizor said most of them don't compare to todays games.  I remember as a kid, playing Pac Man all day until I beat it but when I played Pac Man on the 360 last month I didn't even have enough patience to play through the second set of levels.  After I beat the first one I wanted to play a different game.  A retro game that is open ended, has multiple paths, or multiple endings I will play over and over.  Magic Carpet, X-Com UFO Defense, and believe it or not, Magic the Gathering on PSX are still owned and STILL played by myself.

Speaking of, they are making a UFO Defense remake.  Which rox my fucking sox.

Speaking of retro gaming my friend showed me this dude on the game trailers site called the Angry Video Game Nerd who makes videos about retro games. They are pretty awesome videos to watch and we ended up wasting so much time watching these tonight. Here is a link. Just click on the Angry Video Game Nerd tab about half way down the page.

http://www.gametrailers.com/screwattack

Here is one that I thought was hilarious making fun of old Bible games. I dont know if anyone else played these but I remember a couple of them.

I dont know if this qualifies as retro gaming but me and a buddy played through most of Halo 1 tonight for old times sake. The game isnt THAT old but it still stands up pretty well even today in my opinion and there are just some things that the first Halo got completely right that were changed in the other two.

I think anything retro is pre-PSX era gaming. Stuff like the PSX, N64, Dreamcast, PS2, XBox, and GameCube are like all... borderline. These systems are all just "older" or "nostalgic" I think the term retro (to me) references a style of gameplay that is no longer around ... like a good 2D-platformer or something like Tetris would be retro.

Though it really doesn't matter. As long as its not current gen you might as well consider it retro.

You know I was reading through an issue of, I think it was Game Informer (?) and they were talking about how this generation of systems is supposed to last longer then previous generations have. They made an interesting point about the PS3.

It beats out the 360 and the Wii hardware wise ... yet it is still pretty much in 3rd place. Sony has claimed that they want the PS3 to have a 10 year life span... but if they're not making any money on it what should they do?

Do you guys think Sony would ever release a secondary system under a different name? OK let's say Sony decides they want to get a piece of the Wii casual crowd .... would it be wise to release a system and all it the "Sony Genesis" or something that has motion controls and all that jazz. A beefed up version of the Wii. Yet is still far cheaper than the PS3 and its going for a totally different market.

Thoughts?

Where Sony will get ahead on the PS3 is by it being around longer and being supported by devs longer like the PS2 is now. The PS2 is still growing strong and Sony is banking on the notion that the PS3 will still be selling strong 5 or 6 plus years from now and at a far lower price so they will probably make up for what they are losing now. Not to mention with every year that goes by the library for the PS3 gets stronger and stronger so someone who buys the system a year or two or even more from now will have plenty of awesome titles to play at a cheaper price.

There is no reason for Sony to put out something else and I dont see them doing that for quite some time honestly.
