Ok, this UFC Undisputed 2009 is fun as shit.
After a 12 hour marathon of it today I can say the game is in fact incredibly fun. Again, the learning curve for this game is extreme and probably the steepest of any game Ive play in quite some time, but if you are willing to stick with it and get over that hump you will be greatly rewarded with one of the better fighting games in recent memory and definetly the best UFC game ever made.
Its amazing how I went from kinda liking it early on in the day to "cant put it down" within the course of one day. I cant stress enough how long it takes before the controls just become second nature but once that happens you can really enjoy this game and really start to see the depth that is there. I can see now why you spent so much time with the demo Slayer, although it doesnt compare to actually playing the game.
Playing through a career is where it gets really fun. Like playing the game itself your character starts out slow and weak and you really cant do a whole lot of ass kicking for a while. Honestly I was very skeptical about the career mode and the game for a while because it starts to seem very mundane and repetitive, but once you start fighting the top 10 ranked fighters of whatever weight class you choose to compete in you start to see the fun and depth really shine through.
The way THQ managed to capture the feel of actually fighting each individual UFC competitor is amazing. The real life stars AI counter-part feels almost spot on and adds real excitement to actually fighting and beating them. As a UFC fan you have somewhat of an advantage before hand because you can almost anticipate how said MMA star is going to fight within the parameters of the game.
Whats so fun is while the training portion of the game seems boring and kinda weak or half-ass at first, you really start to see the fun in micro-managing it and your fighter later on. The most incredibly awesome part is sparing with another person before your upcoming fight because your sparing partner will take on the traits of the fighter you are about to fight so it really is like training for the fight because you get a small glimpse of what its like to actually fight them. Then you can "train" and prepare for the fight however you see fit to do so knowing what to expect before hand.
Once you start fighting the big name stars it gets really epic and I really got into the fights. Whats so fucking awesome is that you have to adapt to each person you fight so you cant just fight the same way and expect to win every fight. I developed the method of basically just fighting said opponent the way they would fight me. Essentially beating them at their own game, which is incredibly satisfying. Taking on such stars as Rashad Evans and Chuck Liddel really do feel intense and you really get a sense of accomplishment from beating them.
Some opponents will just kick the shit out of you though. Rashad Evans if a fucking bitch and he kicked my ass every time I fought him no matter what I did but I enjoyed every minute of it as I enjoyed the challenge.
Also I want to take back what I said earlier about the ref getting in the way all the time. Never happened again for some reason after I posted that earlier.
The graphics are in the game are adequate I guess, but like most THQ games they fail to really impress or blow you away. They get the job done and all the fighters look like their real life counter-parts, but after playing Fight Night Round 4 its hard to be impressed with a game like UFC as FN4 is just fucking beautiful in every way possible.
I do however wish in some ways that fights would go to the score card sometimes. Ive only had 2 fights ever go to the scorecard as someone always gets KO'ed. The random KO's dont bother me as much as they did at first but I do think sometimes it could be toned down, but alas, it is the nature of the sport of MMA so I guess it makes sense. Its just a matter of not letting yourself get KO'ed really.
I also understand why there isnt a rematch option while competing in career as you would probably never actually lose, but I find myself just opening the disc tray if I lose most times before the game can save, not because I cant take losing, but more because I really enjoy some of the good fights and I want to play them again so that I can try and win and try different approaches to the match.
Ok so Ive typed a lot here but I just had to get all my impression out for those of you that havent played the full game yet. I still wont give a final judgement and I still cant say if Id like this or Fight Night better, but Im definetly digging UFC a shit ton right now. I still feel like I have more to learn and I dont even think Ive gotten as good as I can yet. Still cant beat the AI on Expert like its nothing which I hope to get to that level. I am however looking forword to human opponents as that always brings in a new level of depth.
