What Have You Watched Recently? (DVD/Movie Thread)
05/18/09 at 19:32:20

With all the big summer movies just over the horizon ... I figured instead of creating a new thread for each one that we could instead have one multipurpose thread for them all. Consider this your Swiss Army Knife of movie threads. Whatever you've watched that's good... be it on DVD or up on the big screen.

I'll kick things off with the new Star Trek picture. I was a little hesitant going into this one. Quite frankly I've never been a fan of the original TV series. I've never understood why people were so fascinated with it ... it was just as (if not more) campy then the Adam West Batman TV series. Sure it had its humor value of William Shatner ... but not even that could keep me interested in it.

Never seen any of the other Trek pictures. Never seen the new TV show with the bald guy and the black guy who looked like he had a waffle for a forehead. Basically I had no expectations going into the film.

And you know what? I ended up quite enjoying it. Like ... really quite enjoying it. Defiantly one of the better films I've seen this year. The Watchmen is still my number one ... but I think I've got to rank this one a strong number two candidate.

Its high on action. Full of really good actors. Has an interesting plot. And above all else ... has Simon Pegg in it! What other reason do you need to go see this movie?  Cool

I've got Valkyrie and My Bloody Valentine on DVD that I'll be watching when I get off work tonight.

I told you niggas Star Trek was good. Everyone I know thats seen it ends up liking it so its safe to say that movie is a win. Still not better than Watchmen to me as well, but a close second.

As far as other movies go I rented Taken last week when it came out and its fucking awesome. I had heard nothing but good things about it, especially good things from a good friend of mine who, like me, is hard to please when it comes to movies and generally doesnt like them. Liam Neeson just kicks fucking ass in that movie Bourne style.

Other than that I just picked up some old movies I missed like Dark City and Revolver. Both werent too bad honestly. Revolver is a Guy Richie film and I generally like his movies. Things like Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, and Rock N Rolla. Revolver however is somewhat different. More of a psychological movie. Doesnt make much sense at all for a while but once you understand what the movie is about you are like OHH I get it now. It has a unique message that I really appreciated which is essentially how humans are controlled by their egos and how we dont really realize how much our pride and egotistical ways guide our everyday actions almost as if we are a prisoner in our own bodies. Very cool.

I picked up The Curious Case of Benjamin Button but I havent gotten around to it yet. I hear its pretty good. One of my friends even claimed it was a Forest Gump killer and I was like woah buddy. Thats a pretty bold claim there so just back it down now....back it down. Its definetly been compared to that movie so Ill have to be the judge of that.

Also picked up the new Underworld but havent watched it either.

Im just waiting for Terminator Salvation. Should be good I hope.

Ill probably get dragged into the new Transformers. The first one wasnt bad and the second one looks better but Im just not excited about it at all.

Finally saw the trailer for the GI Joe movie......epic fail. It looks like theyve managed to almost completely destroy that childhood passion pretty fucking thuroughly. Just by watching the trailer Im pretty sure with this one those making it were like ok, lets see how bad we can fuck this up. Im pretty sure of all the beloved franchises of my youth hollywood has destroyed in recent years that have pissed me off this will probably hit number one on the list of "all time piss off the fans awards". What can you do.

Im looking forward to the new Quentin Tarantino movie coming out sometime August-ish called Inglourious Basterds. Here is a summary.

"In Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as "The Basterds" are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis. The Basterds soon cross paths with a French-Jewish teenage girl who runs a movie theater in Paris which is targeted by the soldiers."

Seems an odd movie for Quentin to be doing but Im sure he will deliver in style.

No, Epic Fail is the live action Dragonball Z movie, but GI Joe is pretty fucking close.

The last two movies I seen were The Dark Knight and the Basic Instinct/Fatal Attraction remake with Beyonce in it (name slips my mind ATM).  The former was awesome and the latter was so, so.  I wanted more Beyonce tit definitely.

So yeah, I need to watch like movies and stuff, but my ADHD gets the better of me.  If I'm not doing 3 or more things at once, I feel like something is wrong with me.  = True Story.

Speaking of Star Trek, I read yesterday online that apparently R2D2 from Star Wars (of course!) is actually in Star Trek as an easter egg. I didnt catch it when I saw it and I dont actually know what part it is but I think that is just hilarious. Way to piss of Trek fans even more than just changing their beloved franchise by putting a Star Wars character in there. Not to mention pissing of SW fans as well. Pretty bold move there JJ...pretty bold.

I just picked up Righteous Kill on DVD and despite the reviews, i loved that movie.

I also picked up the S.Darko movie because the first Donnie Darko is in my top 5 favorite movies. The sequel S.Darko was complete garbage. It ruined the franchise to its death

That movie with Russell Crowe was awesome

Star trek awesome

Obsessed was fun to watch.

Love the Underworld series

Star Trek, Amazing

Rock N Rolla was also amazing. Didn't think I'd like that one.

I really really hope Terminator will be good. I grew up with those movies, and dammit I'm in love with Christian Bale.

The Watchmen and Dark Knight were the last two really good movies I've seen.

What else is supposed to be coming out?

YES! Dragonball Evolution was complete and utter epic of the epic fail. I've seen all there is to see in the Dragonball and DBZ franchises (DBGT sucked) and this movie made me cry myself to sleep. I watched maybe 20 minutes of it before walking out and getting my money back. Horrible film. I love Chow Yun Fat too and it's sad to see him in a such a shitty flick.

I just beat Stranglehold for the 360 so it brings a John Woo classic, which is the prequel to Stranglehold, to mind that everyone should see. Hardboiled. Go get it now. It has death, crazy gunplay, and action sequences galore. Amazing film from the 90's.

So you are saying he boldy went where no other Star Trek creative mind has gone before?  That's synergy right there folks.  I heard that word watching "TAKE" today on Skinemax and I had to use it.

EDIT - I rented Strangehold for the PS3 when it came out and I of course watched Hard Boiled soon after.  And I must second that, that movie is the shit.  I will probably go see Terminator in theatres.  Especially if it gets super reviews.  It may have already, I haven't really been watching.

None of you saw Crank: High Voltage, did you? You all fucking fail. It's the best, most insane thing all year so far. If any of you can still catch it at a cheapie theater, drop whatever you're doing (video games, work, caring for children/the elderly, meeting with world leaders, whatever) and GO FUCKING SEE IT. You will thank me.

Saw Star Trek yesterday, pretty good but I'm sick of hearing about it now. I hope Terminator: Salvation is good. The one I'm really excited about is Drag Me To Hell. Yes, it's a PG-13 horror movie, but it's Sam Raimi, and he can do almost no wrong (this one's got to be good now that Spider-Man 3 is out of his system).

I wasn't a fan of the first Crank so I doubt I'll enjoy this one.

Righteous Kill. Horrible. Pachino + De Niro usually equals win but neither one of those guys has gotten a script worth a damn in years. Its not that they suck, I just dont know why someone can give them a good script. If you want to see both of those guys at their best just go watch Heat again and skip Righteous Shit. Heat is perhaps one of the best moives of all time.

I havent even seen this Dragon Ball movie. I saw a poster somewhere but Ive never even seen a trailer or anything much less knew it was out. Im sure it is epic failure though.

As far as Crank I think Ill pass on that one. I like Jason Statham, especially when paired with Guy Richie in one of his films but I cant stand his Transporter-esq stuff. Terrible. Transporter is just TO over the top for me. Nothing in those movies makes one bit of sense. The first Crank wasnt bad but didnt blow me away. How they managed to think it needed a sequel is beyond me, much less make a believable plot as to why he would still be alive after the first flick.

I did finally watch the new Underworld today and its pretty decent if you like those movies. I tend to like them and I hate vampire and warewolf shit so that says a lot.

I saw Underworld on Friday with my girlfriend. 7/10. It's nothing special and it's pretty standard for a vampires & werewolves type movie. I haven't seen either of the other 2 movies so I can't compare.

I'm going to the movies tonight to see something. Not sure yet. Maybe Angels & Demons. Yet again haven't seen the original movie so I'll have no clue what the fuck is happening.

If possible I will be attending the midnight showing for DRAG ME TO HELL. Yes its PG-13 but its going to be a strong PG-13 rating. The film originally had an R-rating attached to it. The only reason it was changed is due to the fact that, generally speaking, PG-13 movies rake in more cash and are easier to market. Plus we'll get it unrated on DVD so its not that big of deal catching a "lesser" cut of it in the theaters.

Crank: High Voltage I think I can wait until it hits DVD. I know it looks super over the top (just like the first one) and I know I'll end up enjoying it because of the fact that its super over the top. I just think I can wait to see that one.

Rob Zombie is continuing to rape the Halloween franchise for all its worth. Despite the fact that hew as very vocal about not doing a Halloween 2 .... H2 is in fact coming out this summer. Surprise surprise he found a way to fit his wife (again) into this picture.

I stuck up for parts of the first picture. Because when you really do break down Rob Zombie's Halloween it has its moments of good direction and good ideas. I'm not sure if I can do the same for this one. It just looks ... corny.

He needs to get to work on that T-Rex film we started hearing about. The biker one.

I'm really looking forward to terminator salvation... should be pretty sweet... I"m glad to finnally see judgement day in action...

still havent seen wolverine origins... I"m so pissed about how much they fucked up deadpool that I'm considering waiting for dvd and just renting.

recently I finnally watched death race it was kinda cool... I liked it in a way... but it kinda had that same blockbuster boredom that most movies these days have...

also I watched Equilibrium with Bale... the story is kinda ludricous but I liked it anyways... I had actually never seen it before so it was refreshing.

Crank was good.

Only reason I am watching Transeformers 2 is because I have a huge hrd on for Megan Fox

Wanna see some messed up movies? Go and rent Bully and Kids, and maybe Requiem For a Dream
